John has been Artistic Director of four of the United Kingdom's major repertory theatres: York Theatre Royal, Liverpool Everyman Theatre, Everyman Theatre Cheltenham, and Worcester Swan Theatre.

    Was responsible for a groundbreaking 250th Anniversary Season, as well as an internationally infamous production of the York Mystery Plays. Highlights include Shakespeare's Wars of the Roses, the Repertory premiere of Madness of George III and the award-winning Moll Flanders.

Artistic Director, Liverpool Everyman Theatre 1990-94

Established a strong classical repertoire in this famous "young" venue. Was also Chief Executive of the Hope Street Project, using theatre to encourage expression and development in young people, and was responsible for co-productions with Talawa Theatre Company and with Thelma Holt Productions, including Alan Rickman's Hamlet. Toured nationally with Bernstein's Candide.

Everyman Theatre CheltenhamArtistic Director, Everyman Theatre Cheltenham 1986-1989

John re-opened the theatre after a £5 million refurbishment programme, running a repertoire of 18 plays per season both in the main house and also in the new Ralph Richardson Studio. Highlights include the European Premiere of Stephen Sondheim's Anyone Can Whistle, the London transfer of Bells Are Ringing and highly acclaimed productions of such plays as Ibsen's Peer Gynt and Miller's Death of a Salesman.

John established a much-acclaimed company of actors and also opened a new studio theatre. He toured regionally, co-produced with Nottingham Playhouse, commissioned new work and transferred Dario Fo's Female Parts to London's West End.
