internationally infamous production of the York Mystery Plays. Highlights
include Shakespeare's Wars of the Roses, the Repertory premiere

a strong classical repertoire in this famous "young" venue. Was also Chief
Executive of the Hope Street Project, using theatre to encourage expression
and development in young people, and was responsible for co-productions
with Talawa Theatre Company and with Thelma Holt Productions, including
Alan Rickman's Hamlet. Toured nationally with Bernstein's Candide.

John re-opened
the theatre after a £5 million refurbishment programme, running a
repertoire of 18 plays per season both in the main house and also in the
new Ralph Richardson Studio. Highlights include the European Premiere of
Stephen Sondheim's Anyone Can Whistle, the London transfer of Bells
Are Ringing and highly acclaimed productions of such plays as Ibsen's
Peer Gynt and Miller's Death of a Salesman.
