John has always had a keen interest in how you take theatre into the community in an active and exciting way. A few highlights include the 1996 York Cycle of Mystery Plays (where God was played by a woman!), the 1997 Coventry Mystery Plays in the ruins of Coventry Cathedral, a workshop production of the same plays in HM Prison Featherstone, and a new production, adapted by himself, for the Year 2000 Millennium Celebrations in Greenwich Park (with a cast of 1000).

The York Mystery Cycle

"Director John Doyle has brought a refreshingly new approach to the age-old tradition of the York Mystery Plays. As well as casting a woman in the role of God, he has crafted a production notable for its humour, music and singing as well as the drama of the Bible story"
YORKSHIRE EVENING POST

"One of the most moving aspects of this exceptionally moving production is that 40 of the surnames of the 170 local residents taking part also appear in the medieval records of the Mystery Plays. The sense of a great tradition of amateur players telling the story of God's vexed dealings with man is unmistakable, and the highest compliment I can pay director John Doyle is to say that his staging is as much a spiritual as a theatrical experience"
DAILY TELEGRAPH

"This is an event that is as much to do with the community, about the act of participation and the act of surrender on the part of performers and audience, as it is about theatre"
