John's freelance work has spanned his whole career. Early one-offs include productions at Perth Repertory Theatre, Dundee Repertory Theatre  and with the Edinburgh Royal Lyceum Theatre Company. There were also productions, throughout the 1980s at the Watermill Theatre Newbury, Thorndyke Theatre Leatherhead, Nottingham Playhouse and award-winning productions both in Dublin and at the English Speaking Theatre in Vienna.

Touring productions have been seen in Oxford, Aberdeen, Bath, Guildford, Brighton, Richmond, Zurich, Glasgow, and Cyprus - to name but a few.

More recently, John's career has been focused on the freelance market, working at Salisbury Playhouse, Newbury's Watermill, the Open Air Theatre, Regent's Park, Greenwich, Kentucky, Lausanne, Birmingham and London.
