NOVELIS (EX ALCAN)

 DAVID'S LOAN, FALKIRK

The demolition of the Novelis plant, formerly Alcan (British Aluminium), at David's Loan, Falkirk was completed in Autumn 2006.

We had previously demolished the Hot Line, Casting Shop and the South Finishing areas over the past few years.

This was the final demolition as the plant closed completely and the area was prepared for development by Scottish Enterprise and Falkirk Council.

The project comprised of the demolition of the remaining Cold Mill, Annealing and North Finishing areas.

The remaining plant was first removed utilising the existing 100 ton capacity overhead crane before isolating the plant and completing the removal using our excavators with grab and shear attachments.

The buildings were then demolished using our high reach excavators with shear attachments.

Special techniques  were devised and employed, in consultation with the HSE, to remotely remove asbestos sheeting which lined the roof.  This was closely monitored to ensure no fibres escaped from the work area and completed successfully prior to the demolition of surrounding areas.

A major part of the work was to remove the concrete floor and foundations over the full site.  This material was crushed and stockpiled on site for reuse in the building of new roads and factory units on the site.

Even before the project was completed the first of the new buildings was rising in the South East corner of the site as the new Asda tray washing facility took shape.
