November 2004 Update:

 

First long run this happened:

Yes, this is the clutch release bearing and its melted, this was proceeded by the input shaft bearing going.
Being a lazy tight wad, I bunged an autobox in:

But while the engine was out I fitted a hotter cam and a new timing chain:

 

It appears the auto needs a different starter motor as the driveplate ring gear is a lot further away from the block but none of the local parts places even had a book that listed a different starter motor for the auto. So I bought a light weight starter from race mettle with a modified spacer. Works a treat:

 

But missed the fifth gear, it was very busy at cruising speed on the 2 litre 3.9:1 axle so I bought a 2.8 axle (non LSD). It seemed a good idea to fit rear discs at the same time:

As one of the multileaf springs turned out to be broken, I fitted some single leaf springs, polybushed of course and with a triangulation kit:

Finally needed to move the expansion bottle to help cooling and fit a bigger master cylinder:
