Features on the Granada Scorpio, designed and styled for your conifort and convenience. Electrically operated sunroof, height adjustable front seat belts, unobtrusive multi-function stalk controls and an overhead console with map reading lights, courtesy light, warning lights and a multi-function digital clock.

The Scorpio's superb traction can be made even better by taking up the option of Ford's latest limited~slip differential. On slippery surfaces - and when powering through a corner it improves rear wheel adhesion by directing more torque to the other end of the axle. A speed-sensitive viscous coupling accounts for the differential being much smoother and more progressive than the traditional 'mechanical' type.

Central locking secures the doors as you sink into the Scorpio's unique seats. Covered with Athos and Crushed Velour cloth, they combine superlative comfort with long-term durability and complement the car's suspension. The front pair are heated and power-adjusted, allowing the driver to alter height, reach and rake.

Another measure of longdistance comfort is provided by both front seats having pneumatically adjustable lumbar pads which give extra support to the lower spine. The low-friction seat belts have vertically adjustable upper mountings, and their buckles move with the seat frames.

Drivers will also appreciate how the steering wheel and the stalks controlling the Scorpio's indicators, headlights, wipers and washers can be moved up, down, backwards and forwards to achieve the ideal command position'.

The fascia is distinguished by a discreet strip of wood veneer and its instrument panel locates all dials, gauges and warning lights where they can be checked at a glance by day or night.

Other sources of information about the outside world as well as the car include Ford's fuel computer and the graphic display whose functions range from checking the fuel filler cap's security to delivering warnings when the temperature nears the point where ice may become a hazard.

A feature unique to the Scorpio, but epitomising the comprehensive nature of its standard equipment, is power-adjustment for the 60:40 split-fold back seat, which also has a central armrest and integral head restraints. Button-operated electric motors recline either or both sections through 15 degrees, enhancing the luxury of a rear compartment whose leg room exceeds the class average by a significant margin. There can be no doubt that the Scorpio is a genuine five-seater.

The Granada's luxury owes a great deal to modern technology, because Ford uses a life-sized human figure when designing seats. Fitted with nearly 100 sensors, all linked to a computer, it identifies pressure points that are then eliminated by careful padding.

Travelling by night reveals other aspects of the Scorpio's character. Door~mounted lights illuminate the kerb, the front passenger's vanity mirror is lit, and the courtesy lights wait several seconds before switching themelves Off. A mellifluous 'gong' sounds a reminder if the driver's door is opened while the exterior lights are on very welcbme after badvisibility driving during the day.

The key incorporates a tiny torch and operates highsecurity locks designed specially for the new C;ranada. An unusual profile makes the key very difficult to copy, but that is only one part of the story, because the locking device consists of disc plates. They eliminate the conventional springs and are very difficult to pick. The lockk feels 'dead' when anything other than the correct key is inserted.

The Scorpio's optional antitheft alarm provides an even higher level of security. Automatically set when either front door is locked, it guards against unauthorised opening of the bonnet, fuel flap, passenger doors and tailgate by sounding a special horn intermittently for 30 seconds.

All the new Granadas are very quiet - even at high cruising speeds or when the engine is working hard in the lower gears, But extra soundproofing gives the Scorpio exceptionally low noise levels which can play an important fatigue-fighting role at the end of a long day at the wheel. Freedom from wind, road. and mechanical noises enhances the quality of the all~electronic, multifunctional ECU1 in-car entertainment as it delivers words and music through six speakers.

With the ECU1 comes the option of a combined graphic equaliser and power amplifier - plus the chance to provide two sets of headphones for back-seat passengers who can listen to their favourite broadcasts and tapes when the Scorpios other speakers are switched off.

The Granada Scorpio's standard specification would not be complete without the beneficial luxu,ry of air conditioning. Ford's system, one of the most advanced and versatile in the world, maintains control over the luxurious five-seater's interior environment regardless of weather conditions. It also reduces high humidity to comfortable levels and quickly clears a completely fogged windscreen.
