The Alfriston Village War Memorial
St Andrew's Parish Church

The Alfriston War Memorial was erected by public subscription.

The marble used is from the quarries at Carrara in Italy.

The St George and the Dragon which surmounts the Pediment is a replica in bronze of a figure by a 15th century craftsman.

The enclosing balustrade is from the Jacobean altar rail from this church.

The mosaic in the Pediment is intended to symbolise the self-sacrifice and devotion of the British Armies during the long years between A, Alpha, the Beginning, the Retreat from Mons, the Hill,  1914, and O, Omega, the End, the Recapture of Mons on the last day of the war, 1918.

The Cross is the symbol of supreme sacrifice.

The inscription on the Abutments of the Archways :

Ecce Mors Januae Vitae

Behold ! Death is the Gateway to Life

The Circle beneath the Roll of the Dead is the Scout Sign meaning 'Gone Home' in memory of 3 Scouts, H Keating, F J Farmer and G F Wooler of the 1st Alfriston Troop.
