He was shot for desertion in the prison which stands next to the cemetery

Thiepval Memorial

Pupils beside the grave of Private Joseph Condon who was the youngest British soldier to die in the war
His grave records his age as 14 years old
He was actually 13 years and 10 months old when he was killed

On their return to school pupils will make a presentation about the ways in which such visits help them to understand the war
