Important dates in the building of the church at Mid Calder

The original parish church was built in the 12th century (1100s).

The church was dedicated to St Cuthbert.

Not much is known about the early church.

Peter Sandilands became rector in 1526 and started to build a new church on the site of the old one.

In 1542 Peter Sandilands described what the new church would look like.

As a result of the Reformation the church was not finished and the choir which had been completed was used as the parish church.

In 1645 the church seated 438 people.

In 1862 a new extension or transept was added to the church.

In 1929 the parish church renamed St John's.
