Churchyard :
- many poor people could not afford to have grave markers put over their grave
- many rich people paid to be buried near or in the church
- in the Middle Ages markets and fairs were held in churchyards
- by the 1800s many churchyards were full and in some places the bones of the dead could be seen on the surface
- in the 1990s green burials became popular and you may see trees marking a grave
