Mithraeum

A temple to the god Mithras, the god of light.

He was said to have captured and killed the sacred bull from whose blood all life sprang. Mithraism was introduced into the Roman Empire 68 BC.

A bath in the blood of a sacrificed bull formed part of the initiation ceremony of the Mithraic cult, which spread rapidly, gaining converts especially among soldiers.
