We deeply regret to make the sad announcement that Sergt Alex B Jack, of the Royal Scots, eldest son of Mr A B Jack, The Schoolhouse, West Calder, was killed in action on the 12th April.
Previous to enlisting, Sergt Jack was a teacher in West Calder higher grade Public School, and was well known throughout the district.
He was stationed at Dundee for a considerable time, but when the Germans began to mass men on the Western front, after the Russian collapse, Sergt Jack proceeded with a draft to France. He was not long there before he distinguished himself in the raiding which took place before the big offensive, and for gallantry he was awarded the Military Medal. A few weeks later he was again singled out for meritorious work, and was given a bar to the medal.
He took part in the severe fighting which followed the opening of the German offensive, and on the 12th April, when the fighting was at a critical stage, his Company was out in to try and stem the German rush.
He fell along with the greater part of his men, gallantry holding back the Huns until the British line at that point was strengthened.
