He had only been at the front for a few weeks when he was called upon to make the supreme sacrifice for his country.
In civil life he was on the staff of Messrs Drummond Brothers, seed merchants, Leith.

Dear Mrs Smith - It is with the deepest regret that I have to inform you of the death in action of your husband, 2nd lieut T L Smith, who was killed in action on the 18th September, in front of _________ I have delayed writing to you in order that I might be able to tell you where his body was buried. I have at last succeeded in finding his grave, and I have erected a cross over it.
