"This is a photo of Pte James Gray, Mossend, West Calder, of the 1st Cameron Highlanders, who has been killed in France. Pte Gray, who is 21 years of age, enlisted last August, along with his brother Tom, in the Camerons, and after a period of training he was drafted to the front. The brothers have been in several stiff engagements. The sad news of Pte Gray's death was contained in a letter to Mrs Gray from her son Tom. The sons were the support of a widowed mother. The family came to the West Calder district from Niddry in West Lothian and Pte Gray, who was of a most genial nature, was well known and a general favourite.

James Wilson Gray lived at 20, Mid St., West Calder. He is buried in CABARET-ROUGE BRITISH CEMETERY, SOUCHEZ, Pas de Calais, France. The cemetery was begun by British troops in March, 1916. It was greatly enlarged after the Armistice by the concentration of over 7,000 graves, partly from the battlefields of Arras, and partly from 103 other
burial grounds in the Nord and the Pas-de-Calais.
