West Calder Soldier Killed

"Information has reached West Calder that Pte James Neasy, who resides in the Happy Land, has been killed in action at the Dardanelles. Pte Neasy was in the K.O.S.B. and went out with a number of other local lads. Previous to enlisting he worked as a shale miner with Young's Oil Coy. In No. 40 mine."

Midlothian Advertiser, July 23, 1915

Note : there is no record of the name James Neasy on Soldiers Died or at the CWGC website. This 'probably' means that the spelling of his name on the memorial and in the newspaper differs from that on his army record. Alternatively, teenagers who were too young to enlist very often gave a false name !

Addendum

The spelling on the village war memorial is incorrect ! The name Neasy should appear as Neacy.
