The Ellis family suffered in other ways during the war years.
"Ellis - In loving memory of David Ellis, beloved son of Richard Ellis, Mossend, West Calder, who died in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary (the result of an accident) on 17th September, 1915, aged 18 years.
His pleasing smile, his cheery face,
We now no more behold;
The lips that spoke kind words to us
Are now forever cold.
