We regret to announce the sad news which reached West Calder yesterday, that Sergeant Thomas Torrance, of the Cameron Highlanders, youngest son of Mrs Torrance, Dickson Street, West Calder, was killed in action on the 28th July. Sergeant Torrance early answered his country's call for men, having enlisted in December 1914. After a period of training he was sent to France, and had been in active service there for two years and two months, during which time he had taken part in many of the big engagements. He was home on leave during the summer, and was in fine health and spirits. In civil life he worked as a dispatch clerk with Young's Oil Company and at a later date he was employed with the Fife Coal Company at Cowdenbeath. Sincere sympathy will be felt for Mrs Torrance and the family circle in the sad bereavement they have sustained. The sad news was conveyed in the following letter received from Lieutenant ____________
"Sergeant Torrance was killed whilst coming out of the trenches near _______ on the night of the 28th July by shell fire. It may be some small consolation to you to know that death was instantaneous and your son had not suffered. The matter was the more unfortunate in that we had just been relieved from a spell in the trenches and were on our way back for a short rest. Such is the fortune of war."
