Lyndhurst

Lyndhurst is a small town in the South of England in county of Hampshire. It is the 'capital' of the New Forest and attracts many visitors to the surrounding beauty. In the summer months, especially on bank holidays, the high street is bustling with visitors. They are attracted by the animals and the flora and the fauna.

History

Right from Saxon times Lyndhurst has been an important village. In the time of the Saxons Lyndhurst was a royal manor. The Norman’s also chose it as their head -quarters for the whole of the New Forest. This was because the village was a major crossing from east to west from Southampton water to the river Avon; and north to south, from the sea-shore up to where the chalk hills begin to rise. In Lyndhurst, the king's house was built to govern the forest. The building has always been there since Saxon times. The building is still here today and the forest is still managed (very badly by fat Robin) and the forestry commission. Its now called Queen's house Kings have often used the forest to hunt deer and this was the purpose of its creation by William II.
