Care of your New Friends

Feeding
Almost all Stick-Insects eat the leaves of bramble/blackberry and privet. Indian Stick-Insects will also enjoy plants like Oak and Hawthorn. It is important to make sure that your sticks always have plenty of fresh food.

Housing
A simple aquarium can be used with a screen top. Scatter the bottom of the tank with an inch or two of some kind of potting soil. This is more for egg laying  than anything else. Then, using an empty 1lb butter tub, do the following: -
With a sharp knife, make three holes in the lid using a cross pattern.
Fill the container with water and replace the lid.
Take three lengths of bramble about the same length of the aquarium, and insert them into the holes.
Place container inside aquarium.
Now, all you need is a simple spray bottle to water the stick insect once or twice a day. Simply spray the plants and the sides of the aquarium. Be careful not to spray the insect itself; however, as insects breathe through their bodies and it could cause them to drown.
Most Stick-Insects are long thin animals which hang down from their food plants to shed their skins. It is most important that the tank is tall enough, as a general rule it should be three times as high as the adult length of the Stick-Insects to be kept in it. If you do not think your tank is tall enough, simply turn it on its end and use it that way!!

Handling
Many stick insects are good to handle. Lift adults by the middle of their bodies and medium-sized insects by their tails. It's best not to touch baby stick insects as they are delicate.
