STARRY EYED AND LAUGHING"Nobody Home" |
|
ARE STARRY Eyed and indeed, Laughing heading for that vexing corner of British popular music where such folks
as the Brinsleys and the Quiverlands live? In this corner people make superior records which are ignored by all but a coterie (whatever a coterie is) of admirers. SE & L already have an Admiration Society - I have exchanged correspondence with it - and they have made an appealing debut LP. They have also recorded a better-than-the LP session for Top Gear. Yet one has a gnawing suspicion that 'Nobody Home" will go largely unnoticed. The boys sing and play T. Poole’s song in a manner redolent with the new West - yet there is little there that scurries forth and seizes the passer by the scrotal sac. Sounds. 8.3.75. John Peel |
Meanwhile, over at pile 3, we find “Precious Love” By Stray (Dawn), which has a nice chorus and could be a hit for the same reasons as S.Quo’s “Down Down" was, as well as "Nobody Home" by Starry Eyed And Laughing (CBS) which could have been an old Herman's Hermits single seeing as how it’s cute and catchy and acceptably produced, very English and a potential minor hit. As we're all
in a jolly Eurovision mood, does anyone remember the Allisons. This
polite, almost apologetic harmony piece reminds me of their one moment of
glory with “ Are You
Sure". At least it makes a change from comparing this band to the Byrds. This is
an enjoyable record, but when it switches off you forget all about
it, and if it comes over the air, I can’t see anybody jumping on their
roller skates to head for the nearest record shop. Miss.
