‘STARRY EYED AND LAUGHING’ (CBS) –

From year-end review ....

The first twelve-inch long playing record from a band which has given me such pleasure of late. You know the group and you know the album – a really excellent debut. Nothing more to add.

So to Tony Poole, Ross McGeeney, Iain Whitmore and Michael Wackford, who, in total, equal Starry Eyed and Laughing and a dynamite debut album. I can’t wait for the follow-up. Just hope Iain is allowed more than two songs, and one of them must be “Miles Away”. Please!!!

Starry Eyed and Laughing. This is a great debut, but I sometimes fear for the band finding themselves in a musical cul-de-sac in a year or so. If they can avoid becoming mere imitators of mid and late 60’s pop/rock (albeit very good ones), they’ll surely be huge indeed . . . . and justifiably so.

For what it’s worth, and since everybody else does it, my favourite LP’s of the year.

  1. Phoenix Concertsz – John Stewart.
  2. Kidling – Gene Parsons.
  3. Starry Eyed and Laughing.
  4. On The Border – Eagles.
  5. Feats Don’t Fail Me Now – Little Feat
  6. 6. Bongos Over Balham – Chilli Willi and the Red Hot Peppers.
  7. Light Shine – Jesse Colin Young.
  8. New Favourites of Brinsley Schwarz.
  9. Brujo – New Riders of the Purple Sage.
  10. Black Hole Star – The Neutrons
