Ann was born about 1821/2. Census
returns vary with place of birth, from Wilton, Staintondale, Sneaton. At
her marriage to Thomas PATTISON in 1847, she was resident in Pickering,
and gave her father's name - George LOWTHER, shoemaker. She had a child,
Mary LOWTHER, in Pickering in 1844, who later took the name of Ann's husband
and became Mary PATTISON. What I am trying to discover is - was Ann born
LOWTHER? or did she change her name to that of her mother's husband, as
her daughter did? Wilton appears a likely place of birth - but was this
Wilton by Pickering, in the Parish of Ellerburn? Or, was it Wilton by Redcar
or.......?
Jane SHOUT,
my great, great, great, great grandmother
Jane was born about 1766, possibly
at or near to Helmsley, in North Yorkshire. I am fairly certain that she
was connected to the family of Robert SHOUT, the engineer and bridge builder
who, with his sons and some of his brothers, was responsible for several
structures in North Yorkshire and County Durham. However, Jane died too
soon to be recorded on any census. Her first marriage, to Robert HASTINGS
at Helmsley in 1781, was of short duration, as he died and she married George
WARRINER in 1786. I suspect that her father may have been John SHOUT,
but I have not been able to discover any record of her birth or baptism......
Thomas HURD,
my great, great grandfather
Thomas was born in 1801, at Scalby,
near Scarborough. There were two Thomas HURD born within a few months, here,
and both were illegitimate; one the son of Mary HURD and the other the son
of Martha HURD..... Which one is mine? Thomas married Rebecca COCKERILL,
at Scalby in 1829.
17th March 1775
A date, written in my family bible,
for the marriage of William AIR and Isabella WEATHERHEAD. All their children
were baptised in Coldstream, Berwickshire - the earliest in 1776 but, after
years of searching, we are unable to discover where they were married. This
couple are my gggg.grandparents. Their grandson, Alexander Cummings AIR,
made the entries in the bible, during the 1840s, so it is possible that
he may have made an error with either the marriage date, or his grandmother's
name - or both (!)
