ABOUT THE ARTIST Nathan studied theatre design in London in the early 80's. After working for the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Belgrade theatre as a scenic artist and prop maker, he changed direction in the early 90's and became a free-lance artist working in ceramics and mixed media.
In the mid 90's he worked on numerous public and community arts projects, school workshops and residences, involving main stream education, specialist education and special needs.
He also spent six years as an associate lecturer teaching art and design and one year as an arts consultant working on the educational arts curriculum in Buckinghamshire.
Between 2000 and 2002 he taught painting and sculpture in France and has had exhibitions in France and Germany.
He also specialises in large scale murals and has been commissioned by several local authorities and private individuals to do many around the country, particularly on the south coast and London.
In his current paintings Nathan is using a mixture of acrylic paint and collage, a method of working which has recurred frequently throughout his work. The paintings on canvas are inspired by nautical and aeronautical machines to which Nathan gives anthropomorphic qualities. They are set in nonsensical landscapes where logic is thrown away and the twisted forms and machines have an alternative physical law of their own.
The paintings often have a humorous narrative and acrobatic characters that some times reappear in other works. The images in the paintings have developed and accumulated from Nathan's long held fascination with flight and flying machines and in 2004 he fulfilled his ambition to fly aeroplanes himself and gained his private pilots licence. back |
