The book is written by two members of the Microsoft Direct X Development Team.  I've found this has to be one of the best DirectX books I've read.  It covers DirectDraw, Direct Sound, Direct Play, Direct Input and Direct Setup.  It covers the differences between running in windowed and full screen mode, palletized modes, triple back buffers, Lobbies, 3D sound etc.  However, the book does not cover Direct3D, Microsoft are expected to release a similar book in March 2000.

I was undecided whether to buy this book or not as some of the technology it covers is dated in comparison.  I.e. the Pentium II was on the horizon.  However I was pleasantly surprised by the actual content and relevance to today's faster processor what with 1Ghz technology only round the corner.  This book doesn't concentrate on teaching you DirectX programming, it does however teach you how to optimise your DirectX routines and squeeze the most out of your CPU.

Topics Covered:-

  • Overview of Media on the PC
  • Animated Graphics, Sprites and Backgrounds
  • Sprites with DirectDraw Primary Surfaces
  • Hardware Acceleration Via DirectDraw

I spend almost £40 on this book hoping it would teach me what it said on the cover.  I was very disappointed.  The book appears to be written by a kid in the style for kids.  Unless your 8 years old avoid it.  The CD contains numerous examples that are very buggy.  This is unusual from the Waite Group, during my college years, the books they produced were of high quality and very usable.

Topics Covered:-

  • Direct Draw
  • Palettes
  • Bitmaps
  • Sprites
  • Direct Input
  • Direct3D Basics
  • Direct Sound Primer
  • Direct Play
  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Game Distribution
