Scialet Graille

Scialet Graille is a superb little cave located in the middle of a forest, and if you are able to negotiate the rough track (4 Wheel Drive Recommended) provides rewarding, short evening trip.

Country: France                Region: Vercors                    OS GPS Reference:

Depth:                            Number of Pitches:  1           Length:

Access:  Open access, this cave is not locked or gated and there is no restriction on access at any time.

Hazards: None

Special Features: Superb flow stone and stalagmites located in the main chamber.

Description: From the cave entrance a simple pitch is descended with a Y-hang from spits and a tree (other variations possible) to a re-belay, this then leads to a straight drop of about 10m.

The pitch lands at the top of a muddy slope with a fair degree of debree and can be slippery when wet (this slope will get very wet in bad weather). The slope is easily negotiated leading into the first of the chambers.  This first chamber is not very exciting with a small pool on the lower right hand side and a steep slope/ climb to the left which leads to the second chamber.  We normally remove are SRT equipment and leave it in the first chamber as it is not required until the exit.

The second chamber is the main reason to explore this cave, the large sloped floor contains a  range of stalagmites with the walls in some areas covered in flowstone/ sharks fins from floor to ceiling.

There are some smaller chambers to the rear of this main chamber but this can be tricky to fined at times (I didn't manage it on the last visit even though the others were calling) and are generally worth a bit of a crawl.
