Lovely site, well written, good photo records of work done/needed.
Nice to see some attention being paid to the Javelin, after all these years.
Hope to see finished results of your restoration, first-hand!

Have seen progress of restoration myself, being a regular visitor to the Midland Air Museum. Wonderful place, and made better by the quality of the members, who work very hard to make every visit worthwhile. Your aircraft is coming along in leaps and bounds recently, which is great to see!
Glad to see Canopies finally open when I visited a few weeks ago! Bet they were hard work to move!!!!
Keep up the good work, and a First-Class Website as well!

What a great site! Im a British military/commercial aviation enthusiast, and if you hadn't guessed from my e-mail address the Javelin is my favorite. I still have my childhood Dinky Toy Javelin. Please try and dig up more pictures. I especially enjoyed the 33 Sqn. Bruggen flightline shots! I'd be interested in hearing from other Javelin fans as well. I've been to UK four times and seen the survivors at Duxford and most recently Cosford. Now I shall have to come see yours. Again-a great site. Best regards-Charles

In 1964 as an 18 yr old Ground Wireless Fitter at RAF Kuching, Sarawak I often worked on the ARI 1801 teelebriefing system for the Javelins stationed there. I have therefore experienced the noise and smoke from one of these great aircraft on many, many occasions. The noise as they took off seemed to be more concentrated because of the near vicinity of the jungle, about 50 yds from one side of the runway, if my memory serves. The saying was, ''If the Indo's send any Mig 22's against us they will be MIG 15's by the time the Jav's have done with them.
Wonderful bit of nostalgia, I shall certainly be adding this to my copy of FS2000 and CFS.
Good Luck for the future.

I had quite a bit to do with the Javelin at Morton Valence in Gloucester when they were doing the variable icident tail plane Mod's, they lost one in the Severn Estuary complete with the Pilot, as it does not seem to be known that the Aircraft suffered from SUPER STALL problems due to it being the first high variable incidenence tail plane.
They were fitting drag shutes to them so if they got into this situation the chute was released and,( ACCORDING TO MURPHY )THIS WOULD DRAG THE ARSE END UP AND ALL WOULD BE JOY. Except the one that crashed it was not fitted to so it went into the sea off Weston Super mare tail first, all thanks to a WING COMMANDER WATERTON, Who later tried to exonerate his lack of wisdom by Writing a book, Title:- THE QUICK AND THE DEAD, ALL Javelin lovers should read it, sorry I don't kno

In the e mail to your web site last night I somehow entered my incorrect email address which should be as follows:-brian_marshall@btinternet.com I put in a dash instead of an underscore.
Ref the book "THE QUICK AND THE DEAD" by Wing commander I have not got the ISBN # for it but he made that pilot fly that Javelin when he knew it could go into a super Stall which it did, plus many other near fatals.
An excellent site folks,

An excellent site Mark, well done.
As a child one of my earlist memories of service aircraft was a Javelin at a Gaydon Airshow. In those days you could get close enough to touch the aircraft before it flew. The magnificance and beauty of that aircraft has always stayed with me.
The Javelin represented a period of British industrial history that unfortunately has gone forever.Anyone interested in the same theme regarding motorcycles should check out;

Living in Brunssum, just 1 mile from the former RAF-station "Geilenkirchen" I enjoyed, from the late 1950th untill 1966, the prescence of this fabulous aircraft serving with no's 5 and 11 sqdn. I've seen the MK3,Mk5,Mk8/9 and T3. Can you believe no 5 or 11 sqdn had a display team. With the delta planform of the Javelin it was a magnificent view in a blue sky.
I still want to hear that fabulous "Javelin whine".
Please keep on searching for more Javelin pictures.

I have a few photos I can send you if you email me with your email address, I will attach then, The javelin was scrach built and designed by me, so is very much a one off , though the possibilities for future Javs is good as all the moulings,(cockpit etc) I ordered in multiple, Anyway, please contact me as I have loads of original b&w prints of the early Javelins and Im alway keen to chat . If you would like any information or photos I would be only to pleased to help. Alternativly if you have any pictures of Moreton Vallance I would love to see them. Best wishes to you and your Javelin and well done for a very interesting website.

Wonderful site! I've been waiting for someone with access to a real Javelin to do this. Congratulations. I'm also a fan of two other 50's fighters, the earlier RCAF CF-100 and the RN Sea Vixen. It would be marvellous to have a section on your site for crewmen's stories of operating and flying the Javelin.

I will browse site with interest. If there are no links to buy a video based on the gloucester javelin....do you know anywhere that sells one?
Please visit my site in a few days when it has been re-made and add your link in my site. Many Thanks.

Nice site Mark, glad to see someones still interested in the old "Jav".
I served on 64 Sqdn Mk 9 Jav's at Binbrook as an Instrument mechanic from 1963- 65. I loved working on them and we had some great detatchments to Cyprus, India & Singapore amongst other places. I miss the sound of those lovely saphires. I have some photos, if you are interested drop me an e-mail. Keep up the good work.

What an excellent site you've put together. Hearing the Javelins was brilliant! I wonder if any film exists?
I do have a couple of photos of XH892 (preserved at Duxfor I think, and lots of photos of other types dating from the late 40s, to date. Time to get scanning!
For your mark 5 model you could cross kit with a T3; I think Scale Aircraft Modelling did a conversion article. Keep up the good work on the restoration.

Thanks Mark for a great site much enjoyed. My national service,1955-57, was spent as an Air Radar Fitter. Trained at Yatesbury and served at RAF Coltishall initially with Venoms and later the Javelins of 23 and 141 squadrons. The Javelin was a fine looking aircraft of which I have fond memories. I can't believe this much info' exists for such a classic British aircraft. I have been trawling the Web looking up different related subjects, Vulcan bomber,Concorde etc.and find it all very enlightening. The Javelin was around when I was still at school in Liverpool but alas I never got to see one in the flesh as it were.Love your site. Regards LEN.

I really enjoyed finding this site. You have done a great job. I flew with 72 & 64 Squadrons 1960 to 1962. I was a RCAF exchange officer (navigator). I also was attached to the 60 Sqn (Singapore) Ferry Flight delivering new Mk IX's from UK to Singapore. We started with 6 and delivered 4. One had a starter explosion at Malta and the other an inflight explosion climbing out of Calcutta. The pilot did not survive his landing in the Bengal jungle. You have brought on a rush of memories. I was posted out of 151 before the Jav arrived so never got to fly one. An ex-151 pilot named Bob Lockhart appeared on Page 1 of "The Telegraph" with a high ranking Ghurka officer who was presenting Lockhart with a ceremonial Kukri for saving many of his men who were surrounded by the enemy and in great peril deep in a Malaysian jungle . Lockhart, all ammo spent, scared off the opposition by diving at them and causing his engines to resonate, thus saving many lives. Can't remember dates.

I was on 29 Squadron from Jan 66 to May 67 and on 6th April 1967 flew Javelin 9R "E" from Akrotiri to RAF Shawbury on its final flight, along with about 3 others. John Lewer was my navigator and it took 6.45hrs flying time via El Adem, Malta and Istres to get to Shawbury. When we arrived the weather was really poor and we had to carry out a QGH/GCA to get down. After landing we were directed to a distant corner of the airfield with very narrow taxiways. As you are aware the Javelin has a wide track undercarriage and Master Pilot Tam Kirk who was taxying in front of me put a wheel just over the edge of the taxiway and so we had to stop and shut down where we were. The galling thing was that the people who met us said that it was not a problem as they were going to break up all of our aircraft the following day

I would like to see any available photos of Moreton Valence airfield in its 'heyday'. It is now a very delapidated industrial estate called Javelin Park. I am trying to work out the topography of the area as this is now unclear. You will remember the M5 motorway was built on top of the main runway. The the firestation is now a small workshop and the control tower now sits atop a cowshed! A fairly ignominious end for a place with so much aviation history to it.....

I probably flew in XA699 as I Joined N0.
151(F) Sqdn. in August 1957 on the change over from Venoms. My log at that time only gives airframe letters, so if you have the letter used on 151, I might be able to tell you who last flew it on the Squadron.

I flew Javelins with 23 & 60 Sqns and enjoyed your site immensely. Several of Alex Saunders' photos were taken during a ferry "convoy" of Mk 9 aircraft to 60 Sqn at Tengah. I was a pilot on that trip & flew with Alex just once, from Varanasi to Calcutta. If you can suggest an email address for him I would like to send him my regards. Can you help?

Nice to see the Javelin getting the exposure it deserves.
Incidentally, I'm looking for info on the FAW9s detached to Kuching circa 1964/65 and would be most appreciative if anyone could give me any leads into identifying the serials and aircraft letters of these FAW9s.
I have some photos that I took of them there but unfortunately, both serials and letters are illegible in the photos. I'm particularly interested in the 60 Sqn Javs (one of them appears to be XH908 'S') but I'd also be interested in those from 64 Sqn.
TIA for any leads

Nice work, you're to be congratulated. I think the Javelin is one of a number of British a/c that tend to be forgotten behind the more glamorous ones. The only one that I ever saw in the flesh is the one that used to be at RAF Stanmore.
Keep up the good work both at the museum and this website.

I have resently obtained a Gloster Aircraft Company photograph of XA 628 which I believe was the last production FAW 1.The photogragh shows the aircraft without any Squadron markings and the photo coding appears to show it was taken in 1956 by Russell Adams the company photographer.Does anyone know the date of its entry into Squadron service? and any service history with 42 Sq.I have seen a photograph of it with 42 Sqad. in July 1957 at R.A.F Odiham. What happened to this aircraft?
Any information would be most appriciated.

Would love to get hold of a MkIX Javelin Colour Picture (Print) preferably in 64 Sqdn markings or 60 Sqdn markings. I worked on 64 at Duxford, Waterbeach & Binbrook (Jun 60 to Oct 62) then 60 Sqdn at Butterworth and Tengah (Jun 66 to the bitter end of the operational Javelin)
"Riggers Nightmare" Chiefy to airman, Go and replace the No 3 Hydraulic Reservoir. Airman breaks out in a cold sweat then is seen to stagger off armed with big spanners, snips & torch etc and dissapear up the "Bramble Bush" with all the nice sharp scratchy locking wire just waiting to stab and scratch ones anatomy, even better at Tengah in the mid day heat. A Sauna has nothing on that job. After a lot of hours comes out frantic covered in OM15 with a reservoir in his oily & grubby hand.

Privileged to be a pilot on Nos 72 and 23 Squadrons early Fifties...Church Fenton - Leconfield - Coltishall - Leuchars. No 23 Sqn one of a couple selected for Long Range In-Flight Refuelling Trials. Various routes, including Uk - Singapore and return with twelve aircraft. Also has great fun leading the (I believe) one and only Javelin formation display team of four aircraft for three seasons. Of the thirty-odd types and Marks of aircraft I was lucky to fly...and be paid for it!!!..the Javelin ranks top of the list for sheer toughness and dependability. Do not believe any surviving critics of the Javelin....it was one of the best!!

As a former member of 72 Squadron in the fifties I am trying to track down a specific Russell Adams photograph of the historic formation flight that took place while we were converting from Meteors to Javelins in 1959. Gloster apprentices had refurbished a Gladiator whose airframe number indicated it as having once been a 72 Squadron aircraft. The opportunity was taken to fly three Gloster aircraft in one unique formation.
As a participant in the formation I got two of Russell Adams' prints of the occasion. Unfortunately one was stolen several years ago from my office in Transport Canada. Now that I am retired I'm trying to track down a copy.
Linda Lane Photography of Pitchcombe, Gloucestershire, has many of the late Russell Adams photographs - including several of Javelins - but not the specific one I

Remarkable to find a site dedicated to the Javelin. A forgotten aircraft. I was with 41 sqn at Wattisham 1957-9 as an electrical fitter(air)flying mks 4 & 7. 22 tons of screaming aluminium was the general feeling. The most interesting times were air firing exercises at RAF Sylt in northern Germany. might have some photos if I can find them. Terry.

Brilliant Website, not a big fan of Jet Engine aircraft, but I make an acception to the Javelin, as a child i was brought on a farm 8 miles west of Norwich, the Javelins use to fly over the farm frequently, i believe they were based at Horsham St Faiths, visited the Cosford aviation museum last year (twice) i can't believe the amount of photo's i took of the Javelin, my mate & I will have to visit the Coventry aviation centre sometime this year.
