I found your website yesterday and it was great to see the band photos. My name is Tony West and I was a founder member of the Smoky City Six as it was then. The only original member of the current band is Bob Jones. Our first gig was at the Bamboo Club in Hazel Grove on Friday 11th February 1966. I remember it well because my first daughter was born at lunchtime that very day. Before that I played in the Dallas Jazzband with Tony Foulkes, Terry Brunt and Bill Smith. I moved to Adelaide in 1970 and have been here ever since, apart from the whole of 1976 when I took a year's leave to visit my dad in Stockport and re-joined the Smokies doubling banjo and blues guitar, playing the entire year including a great trip to Holland in the November. I note that Ken Doran is playing in the Chicago Teddybears. He played trumpet in the Sheaf River Jazzmen, which was the first band that I ever played in when I was at Sheffield University in 1959. Ken was at the Teachers' Training College. I ran into him in 1976, and he kindly sent some photos of this band. I have lost contact with everyone, so I wonder if you might be able to pass on my email address to some of them. Unfortunately we have reached the age at which you cannot be sure whether or not those friends and colleagues from years ago are still alive. The band photos help a little, but I would love to hear from Sheila Collier, Terry Brunt, Bill Smith, John Hallam, Tony Foulkes, Tony Pollitt, Ken Doran etc etc.
I am still playing banjo and guitar in bands in Adelaide, and am presently relaxing and recovering from last night's New Year's eve gig. I am still teaching maths, science and computing in a High School, and I am married to Chris who came with me to England in 1976. We have two daughters Madeleine (15) and Camilla (11).
Regards to everyone.
Tony West.

My wife & I like going to 'find' Jazz, rather than just visit the nearest venues - beats TV! We're going to see Pete Allen at Aldwynians next week. We saw him and his ban (Arthur Brown & all) at Bude last year. Cheers, Bernard Lyon

Congrats for giving us this smashing site ! I am an avid jazz fan (all kinds), and I am enjoying live jazz two or three times a week, visiting venues such as Castleton Gabriels, De la Salle, Eagley Jazz Club, Bolton Cricket Club, Rhythm Station, etc.etc. I am also a member of Manchester Jazz Society (meets Thursdays at Unicorn Hotel, Church St. Manchester) and Bury Jazz Society (Mondays at The Mosses Centre, Bury.) I have made many friends in these places, and I am so happy to be enjoying this wonderful music with you all. Anyone who wants to get in touch is more than welcome,My favourite bands at the moment ? Phil Masons New Orleans All Stars, Wabash Jazz Band, Savannah, Chicago Teddy Bears - hang on a bit ! they're all brilliant. Cheers, Ron Berry.

Hi Fred
First of all, very many thanks for your exposure and news of the band's inaugural Merseyside Jazz Festival on the web. The weekend was a roaring success for everybody involved - the Crowne Plaza Hotel, the hundreds of fans who came to be well entertained by the many bands and musicians and, not least, the MJB who managed to come out of it all with a modest, but very satisfying, profit - and eight monumental hang-overs. We are sure that your input contributed to the Festival's success - but we don't blame you in any way at all for appearing the following week red eyed and bushy tongued ..... The provisional dates for the 2001 Merseyside Jazz Festival are Friday/Sunday 9/11th February at the Crowne Plaza, Liverpool.

Many years ago ( early 1960's ) I used to play drums with the Saints Jazz Band, our main gigs used to be at the Bogeda, in Manchester, we made a couple of 45's for parlophone, "Roses of picardy" etc also I played with bop group at the Club 43, at the Clarendon Hotel on Oxford st, it used to be run by a guy called Eric Scriven, the reason I am writing this is that I have lost touch with "that old gang of mine" so if anybody from the old days would like to get in touch, or can tell me how to get in touch with Eric Scriven I really would appreciate it.Thanks for letting me use your facilitiesMerton Kaufman

I really enjoyed your site, and spent a pleasant wet afternoon browsing, and remembering many of the bands I saw in the '60s, although a lot of the names have changed since I moved to Canada in '69. I was frequently at the Black Horse Pub in the Wirral where the Panama Jazz Band played on a regular basis. Any ideas as the what happened to their regular line-up of the mid-late 60s - banjo player Neil Hopkins for example?
