Life long trad jazz fan. Now 62 years of age, Played trumpet in Trad Band whilst I was in the RAF stationed in Cyprus back in 1960/63., Band was called "The Stockyard Ramblers" I still listen to jazz, sadly I do not play anymore. Does anyone know the whereabouts of Alistair (Jock) Mackenzie, originally from Inverarie, he played Banjo, Don Cadwallader, originally from Wallasey Merseyside, his parents had a newsagents shop. He played Trombone. These are the only two members of the "Stockyard Ramblers" jazz band that I can remember. Can anyone out there help me?
I'll put it on the "Where are they now" page for you Dave

I was thrilled to find your information in the website of The Classic Jazz Society of Toronto,Canada, whose website is "www.ClassicJazzToronto.com". I've been a jazz fan since I was ten years of age; now I'm almost seventy. I have loved particularly English (British)(Traditional) jazz since I first heard it and began in my teens collecting records. I enlisted in the RCAF and arrived in North Luffenham, Rutland County, in April of 1954, and quickly heard of, and started reading "Melody Maker" and "New Musical Express." They led me to good jazz spots, and every chance I had, I headed to London to hear Humphrey Lyttelton, Cy Laurie, and a band playing at the Fox and Goose,at Ealing, whose name I don't remember, and whose musicians are nameless in my memory. If you communicate with me by email, please identi

Good Morning, Fred . I've changed my email provider three weeks ago, and in the process, lost all of my treasured messages and addresses. I've just found your website again, by going through the website of the Classic Jazz Society of Toronto, where I first found you. In reading through your messages again, I found my message to you about "Kid" Bastien's funeral service. At the time I wrote it, I couldn't remember the title of the person in the black suit with red sash and top hat, strutting about, pumping an umbrella while the band jazzed it up in the street outside the chapel. I believe that person is titled, The "Grand Marshal." I"m very happy to be in contact with you again, re-reading your information, catching up on many things, but not such as the death of Cy Laurie, my favourite clarinet

I'm glad I discovered this site, if only to get news of Hugh Potter, bass player with The Original Panama Jazz Band. We were both members of Liverpool University's Rhythm Club, of which I later became president. I was a drummer in some of the university bands after Hugh's time there. I'm happy to know that he still plays jazz. Never much of a musician myself, I am still very much on the jazz scene as a keen enthusiast, frequenting the clubs here in Brisbane.

Hya Fred: I found your excellent site thanks to a co-incidental meeting with old fellow jazzer Willy Entwistle in Lancashire (Temperance Seven and Cafe Society). Gosh -- it was like stumbling through a time warp. So many bands and players I remember with great fondness and admiration. I'm really looking forward to keeping up through your site with what appears to be a revitalised scene in North West England. That neck of the woods certainly produced no mean talent and much more than its share of friendly fun, didn't it! Love to everyone -- even those no longer with us -- you all made one callow youth a very happy young man with memories to treasure for a lifetime. Hope to make the trip back one day and experience the excitement of the music and ambiance all over again. Neil Marr in Southern France.
Thanks Neil, I've put your email on the reminiscing page

Just caught the Chris Barber BIG Band 50th anniversary concert last night at Canterbury. The new eleven man line up really blows a storm and as for Chris Barber himself what can you say about a seventy year old who is so still in touch with the current music scene. Unfortunately, Pat Halcox (trumpet) was unable to appear last night as he is suffering from an ear infection but Mike Henry filled in more than adequately.
Thanks for that Ron, it's also thanks to Chris that I got interested in traditional jazz, and subsequently this web site

Hello Fred thanks to your exceedingly helpful website info, I was able to track down and meet up with my very young old friend Mike Carnie at the Wilbraham Arms, after some 24 years absence. I was fortunate to meet Mike, his wife Sue and son Nick (who happens to be a linguist, like me, although better qualified than I am academically). Mike and I mulled over old times, planned new times, and I enjoyed an excellent blow with Mike, Derek his magnificent pianist, the equally swinging bassist Dave Capp, fellow multi-reedman Dave Mott (whom I've admired and respected  forever), Tony Dunleavy, who was playing in his inimitably smooth and always tasteful style, and the incredible Ian Royle for whom no eulogy could be deemed sufficient.
Glad to have been of help Joe

Many happy hours were spent with the Zenith 6, Batty's Jazz Aces, the Southside Stompers and the great bands that used to play at the Bodega. Thank you Fred for your informative e-mails over The Dixieland Hotshots with Alan Yates. It seems that the band has disappeared altogether from the scene. I worked for years with Alan (guitar), Ronnie (drums), and Pete (bass) - also Eddie Hosey on bass before Pete. We had quite a sought after little function band in the late 70s/early 80s called The Alan Anthony Set, - used to work the big Manchester 5 stars. I with my wife went on to the world of Children's Entertainment. We celebrate 25 years of this come November. I had a brief spell back in the clubs on organ 12 years ago but late nights and lunchtime parties don't go together! Last saw Alan about 15 years ago, Ron about 4 years ago and Peter about 7 years ago. Would have been nice to find them at the Wheatsheaf, Altrincham - but alas, just an empty space
Don't you believe it, I'll find them if it kills me

Nice website, lots of jazz about in the north by the look of things. I do hope so because we've just bought a house in Darlington, and as a "southern softy" jazz drummer, I will be on the look-out for any freelance work that is available. Over the years i have had the honour of backing such people as Digby Fairweather, George Melly, and played for a while with the Pete Allen band, just before he went professional. So, If you hear of anyone who needs a drummer, perhaps you could give them my e-mail address. many regards, mike Green.

Just clicked on Doug Whaley by happy mistake and found your page. SO MUCH TO TAKE IN ! (Doug's looking great in Preston(?),but he never was a monochrome character when i played with him) at various times. Looked at the visbook (current), saw Joe Silmans comments about recent gig with Dave Mott, and immediately thought of the time when Dave and the rest of the band never made the gig- motors(?),leaving Joe & I to entertain wedding guests. I think we played bossanovas ! Anyway I do recall an awful (sic) lot about those days and will send you a txt attachment when I piece it together. I get Marts newsletter but I never thought to find your GOLDMINE !Cheers FN John White (bass).
