Dear Fred, As you have kindly let me say before on your excellent site, visitors to North-West France can find traditional jazz in this part of the world and now they can find the dates on our new website: www.goodtimejazz.net .Perhaps you could consider putting this on your "worldwide links" page? We are also holding a festival on August 6th 2006 with, among others...who else?! .. the Blue Magnolia Jazz Orchestra! Happy New Year to all my old friends in the North West and keep up the good work! Trevor Stent (ex-Blue Mags)
Thanks Trevor, Will do - Fred

Have just been directed to this site by a friend and have read Brian sanders comments (14th dec) I didn´t pay him!! I run the band and am suffering withdrawal symptoms as I'm now on holiday in Lanzarote aaaagh! No decent jazz. The Band was designed to play a majority of ´Trad´ or Old Style ´Dixieland´ Jazz (call it what you will) The emphasis is on fun and enjoyment mainly for the participants. We play with a synthesised bass which will not please the purists but who cares. I am lucky to have the best players of this style of music on the Costa Blanca. Most Jazz players think it's below their capabilities (probably is) but we usually play to full houses. ¿What does that say? ¿Isn't it fun typing on a Spanish keyboard? We played our first ever stage concert in a new theatre in Torrevieja 30th Nov 2005 to a more than sell out audience. The main stress was speaking in Spanish (it was expected) to the 10% of the audience which was Spanish.  I was told afterwards that we had the best show of the season and hope that more will follow next year.  My holiday in Lanzarote did include the offer of a week of gigs there later in the year (they haven't heard the price!) 2006 could be a good year. Watch this space
Sounds good Jon, keep up the good work. Perhaps you could now start on your mailbox, I got a message saying it's full!

Wish I lived your side of the Big Hills.
I'll bet there's plenty over there if you look for it Jack. I didn't think there was any over here until I found the first one.

Anybody want to start a jazz appreciation society in Manchester? Especially Southern African jazz?
There's already a Manchester Jazz Appreciation society - see Jazz Clubs, I'm sure they would welcome you Heather.

Wow!!!!! I've never come across anything like it! I'll add this site to my favourites and enjoy making regular visits. I first got into listening to Jazz when I regularly visited the John O Gaunt Lancaster ('95-98). Brilliant beer, excellent live music and always a warm welcome. Happy memories. I was blown away by Nick Milwards drum solo on I Got A New Baby in the 3Bs gig at the Lowry Salford Quays on my 40th Birthday (2004. Sadly I have never managed to get hold of a copy of Now 4 The Millennium though.
Thanks Glen, there's currently 292 web pages on the site - happy reading. I tried to email you but the address you gave bounced - Fred

Nice site, I like the automatic link to music whilst you read! I was just browsing when I came across this site and was surprised to come across a photo of my father, James Anthony Smith (Tony) to his friends in the Yorkshire Stompers. Not seen him for years but at least I know he's still alive.
Many thanks for your kind comments David. I hope you see your dad soon, life's too short.

I play trombone with Gerry Brown and the Mission Hall Band which was reviewed in Just Jazz's latest issue. Why is your news page only for the North of England?
Because there's only me doing it for free, which do you want blood or a divorce?

Sorry to hijack your Guestbook but I was wondering if the Alan Walker from Rochdale Lancs is the same one that worked for my families BMW Dealership in Blackpool. He left in 1998 and I would love to speak to him again! Is there any thing you can do regards Anthony Woodman
No problem Anthony, I'll see what I can do for you

Hi I have come across your website thro Google. My wife & I have become interested in the jazz scene after Appleby last year. We would liked to have gone to Keswick this year but unfortunately we can't get our caravan on a site there as they are fully booked. We were wondering if there is anything else on in the north of England or S. Scotland Any suggestions? Regards Terry
All I know is on the site under What's On or Festivals. Have you got your copy of Jazz Guide?

Fred. Recently picked up your message on the web. No I am not playing currently, but still have the kit. Coming up to 75 in August, but would welcome hearing from old mates and, who knows, organising a reuniion session. Keep swinging Don Bridgewood
Great to hear from you Don after your name cropped up in Reminiscing several times

It is good to hear that Don Bridgewood is still alive and kicking. I used to play the clarinet with him in the Southside Stompers about 50 years ago when we started a Saturday night club at the Black Lion. Other members during my time in the band included Roy Bower, Roy Williams - (he was with us for 6 weeks until he joined the Eric Batty jazz Aces),Jack Palmer, Eric Brierley, Ulysses Newton, Norman Dakers, John Turner (and his father who played double bass), Joe Whitehead, John Featherstone. We had many interesting experiences including a tour of the south, and a memorable day when we visited Strangeways (as entertainers) and then were innocent victims in a police "sting operation" at Whitefield British Legion when the organisers were charged with the heinous crime of allowing musicians and non-members to drink alcoholic refreshment without signing the visitors’ book. We never did get paid for that gig!
Thanks for that Alan, I've sent a copy to Don

It does my heart good to see all this interest in N.O. and Trad jazz. I started playing clarinet in Keighley, W. Yorks. in 1957 with the Crescent City Jazz Band. We had regular gigs at the Students Club in Bradford, Brown Cow? at Wilsden, Thornton Manor and working men's clubs all over the place. At first we had David "Copper" Copperwaite (trumpet), Malcolm "Mousey" Webb (trombone), me (clarinet), Eric Wright (bass), Pete "Crid" Cridland (drums)and a banjo player (the name I can't remember). The bands were in a constant state of flux and competition and I played with Dennis Armstrong (cornet) quite a lot. I couldn't play worth a damn but I thought I could! We were all pretty bad but as enthusiastic as hell. I know that Copper, Mousey and Dennis are still playing, that is wonderful.....I envy you guys! I played with Cliff Bastien in 1964 in Toronto with the Black Eagles (he was playing trombone at the time). We had Joe Van Rossem (trumpet), Henry Van Rossem (tuba), Bernie ? (drums). I started the Mississauga Jazz Band with Bob Erwig (trumpet) and Jack Vincken (banjo). These guys went on to form the Climax Jazz Band which is still going strong. I am still plugging away, but due to the complete lack of trad musicians I have a one man band with the aid of computer software. We have "me" on cornet, "me" on clarinet, "me" on tenor sax, and "me" on bass clarinet. We rarely have any conflicts.. good guys really! Anyway, hope I didn't bore you, but if anyone out there remembers me send an e-mail!
Thanks Bernard, if anybody want me to pass on their addresses, please email me I don't pass them on without authorisation

A lovely site Fred, I'm still exploring it. The off-site links will have to wait! Haven't played (drums) for a couple of years but something will turn up so I'll not flog the kit yet. www.davidbridgen.com

Today, the sad news reached me that Geoff Woollard, drummer of the Savoy Jazzmen from Cambridge died on Monday 29th may 2006. Let's all remember Geoff as a "smooth" drummer, always with a smile on his face and always in a good mood. Goodbye Geoff!!!! Set up your drums in heaven! Hans Bruring "Harpo"
Sorry to hear that, it's happening far too often in the traditional jazz world these days I'm afraid

We are all saddened to hear of the passing of our dear friend Jim Wilkes. He was a great larger than life character always full of enthusiasm whatever the gig and a very fine trumpet player, and front man. He played with The Festival Jazzmen on numerous occasions and was great fun always making up his own words to well known Jazz Tunes on the spur of the moment. We will all miss him so much and would like to pass on our sincere condolence to Dorothy and his family. We will never forget him. Cyril & Nora Wroe & The Festival Jazzmen.
Thanks for that Cyril & Nora, He was indeed a great guy.
