The High Society Jazz Band

Whether playing compositions created by King Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton, Duke Ellington or one of the master craftsmen of the Great American Songbook, the HSJB has been imbued, over five years of its life, with a spirit of spontaneous creativity, risk-taking and discovery. We like to present jazz at its virtuosic best and to have the pleasure of playing together as musicians, learning from each other and sharing music together.

      At our two resident venues, Carnforth Station Tea Rooms (home of the film "Brief Encounter") and the Pier Hotel overlooking Morecambe Bay, we have had appreciative audiences. It has led us on to jazz clubs in Leeds,Carlisle, Southport, Ayr, Roa Island (Barrow), Kendal and The Crofters Hotel (Preston) and recently to a jazz weekend in Grasmere. We have given concerts in the intimate surroundings of the Heron Theatre (Beetham) and the Roundhouse Theatre (Staveley) and also on the huge stage of the Winter Gardens Morecambe. May 2012 sees our first appearance at Keswick Jazz Festival.

      Four years ago, we played for the opening of the Barton Grange Garden Centre by Princess Anne. She asked for a band card. We are still waiting for the booking!
