THE RHYTHM KINGS
Mike started playing cornet at 13 years old and fell in love with jazz after hearing Bix Beiderbecke and Bobby Hackett. Played in a band with local school friends before meeting trumpet player Duncan Whyte whom he worked with till the end of his career. Apart from playing jazz he has worked with numerous show bands and backed caberet throughout the UK. He is also the founding member and leader of the Rhythm Kings Jazz Band.
KIT CAREY BANJO/VOCALS
Kit started his playing career
with the Bourbon Jazz band, and in 1963 joining Trombonist Jimmy
Abercrombie’s ‘No Mean City Jazz band, with whom he played for the
next five years. Kit also toured Canada and the UK with the Clyde
Valley Stompers.
TOMMY EVANS BASS DUNCAN NAIRN CLARINET/VOCALS Started playing clarinet at 13 years old with a local teacher and then with Tommy Young the Principle Clarinet with the S.N.O. Moved to London and studied with Jack Brymer and then when to the Royal College of Music. Returned to Scotland in 1964 and joined the BBC in 1965. Has always had an interest in jazz and big bands and has worked with all the local bands in Scotland.
JACK MURRAY TROMBONE/VOCALS
Started his playing career in the
late 1950’s and played with the Esquire Jazz Band before moving to
London with Forrie Cairns and the Clansmen. The band played along
side Louis Armstrong on several concert tours. Has also worked with
Kenny Ball, Acker Bilk, Manyard Ferguson and the pop band Belle and
Sebastian.
