Our yearly Jazz Convention will begin on December 26th and we are on our 64th Australian Jazz Convention. It is being held in the city where it started in 1946. 06/11/09 - "Hallo Fred , I have just read the sad news of Jerry Cards passing. He was responsible that I joined my first band , The Southside Stompers ,mainly Articled Clerks , from Ewell, Surrey. Freed me from a skiffle group after seeing them playing at a church youth club. Every time I went to the UK , I always thought I would like to look Him up, now , the Grim Reaper has put paid to that idea. Which shows that one should not put off things until tomorrow that can be achieved today. My condolences go to His family , and also to His band". - Chris Mitchell , The Harlem Ramblers , Zurich

It's called "alone together" and features two very popular musicians, John himself, from here in the North West, and Jeff Barnhart from Connecticut. Jeff is well known to Keswick Jazz Festival visitors who have listened to the Fryer-Barnhart International Jazz Band. It was eventually reissued on CD, by German label Da Music, but they have told me that there are no plans for a re-release. So if the LP in question is gathering dust in someone's attic or basement, I'd very much appreciate a n email from you. The band paraded into the church hall and out at the finish of the service, and many 'non -jazz' people were enthusiastic in their appreciation of the music. There was a fine buffet provided beforehand ( free of charge) and a retiring collection raised £340 for the Christian charity Mercy Ships, which provides free health care - including surgery - to the world's forgotten poor. The hospital ship 'Africa Mercy' is currently in Benin, West Africa". - Terry Birkinhead.

31/10/09 - Hello Fred ! You don't know me but I'm a rather aged North Liverpool live music nutter who has for a year or so been putting on live music nights for seated audiences, " club style" at my long established and comfortable Waterloo Rugby Club, St Anthony's Rd, Blundellsands, Merseyside. L23 8TW, where we have comprehensive bar facilities ( real ale etc., ) and all the usual comforts including a secure car park. The most recent events have featured " The Rioters Dixieland Jazz Band " and " Swingology Gypsy Jazz", both of whom were well received. We have not been able to attract more than, on average, twenty to twenty-five punters due to the fact that we have not been able to find an economical means of publicising future gigs and it has fallen to me to come up with some ideas in that area. Our next event is planned for Wednesday, 2nd. December, '09., commencing approx 8.30 pm, (doors open 8.00 pm) when the Rioters will perform. We normally charge £4 at the door but an advance phoned seat booking can be worthwhile. I can be contacted by phone on 0151 924 6276 ( home ) or 0151 924 2224 ( office , where they answer " Mackay's Timber " ). - Ron Craig
30/10/09 - "Clinton Ford 's funeral service and cremation took place this afternoon at the Crematorium Chapel here in Douglas. Isle of Man. It was to a "packed house". The service was a celebration of his life and was quite beautiful and informal. Three daughters all gave their thoughts and family memories of their life with their father and tributes to Clinton from Bill Bebb the BBC producer and Brian Matthew who had been best man at Clint and Maggie's wedding many years ago and involved with the Easybeat programme with Clint. Because they could not attend in person their Tributes were read out by Mr David Callister a Member of the Isle of Man Parliament. It was a truly memorable service and an honour to attend. Enclosed a copy of the front and back pages of the order of service with two great photographs of Clinton Ford on them". - Ken & Kath Parkinson

28/10/09 - "Hi Fred, I have just read the news about Clinton Ford. So sad. He was a great performer. I recently bought a CD of his. As many people won't be able to pay their respects due to the long distance, how about someone organising a memorial concert in Manchester/Salford with donations to the Guide Dogs. Perhaps Salford City Council could be involved". Kind regards Mildred Finney
28/10/09 - "Hello Fred. Your readers may be interested in Eamon Friel's Radio Ulster Late Show feature of Saturday 24th October on Andy Razav, lyricist, which included songs by Fats Waller and Louis Armstrong at the start of the second hour of the programme. Well worth a playback on BBC IPlayer. I can indeed recommend the whole programme for general musical interest. John Petters will be pleased to note that Eamon regularly plays good jazz on his programme and has recently featured Nat King Cole Trio, George Shearing among others and is not averse to playing Chris Barber and Ottilie Patterson. Such programmes like his, Radio Ulster's Walter Love's Jazz Club and BBC Radio Scotland's Jazz House which recently featured 'Legends of Jazz' help overcome the dearth of good jazz on BBC Radio 2". - David Evans Rhuddlan
28/10/09 - John Muskett has just added his contribution to "What makes a good jazz club". Why is it that only jazz musicians seem to be adding their thoughts. I can't believe all you fans out there don't visit jazz clubs and have an opinion on which is best and why? Come on, let me know, this is your chance to make a difference and improve things for the good of the music. email me at fred.burnett@btinternet.com . You can access the debate via Jazz Extras
28/10/09 - Hi Fred Some weeks ago I suggested that some jazzers may go to Beauford Jazz Club to see Ritary Gaguenetti. Well last Thursday he played to a capacity crowd of about 150 and he is brilliant. I am suggesting now that those who do like other forms of jazz take a look at www.ritary.com/english/video3.html for proof of a guitar genius. Guitar players should be warned they may have to join a recovery plan after viewing it !!! - Norman Gibson
26/10/09 - Some Good News - The Dixie Kings have secured a new weekly Wednesday evening residency following last weeks sudden demise at Rainhill. 25/10/09 - Recently my Firefox Web Browser has not been displaying the music player on the pages where music can be played, so consequently I couldn't play the tracks. However it appeared OK when using Microsoft Internet Explorer. Checking with other Firefox users, they don't seem to have a problem, but to make sure I'm now changing all the pages where the music player appears, so that it works with both web browsers (I hope). The only difference may be that whilst Internet Explorer users will have to click on the play button to hear the music (with the exception of the Home Page), people using Firefox may hear the music start automatically. That's fine until you get to a page with more than one piece of music on it. I am constantly working towards a solution, my apologies to all those of you who think this information is as useful as Chinese writing.
24/10/09 - Steve Voce is selling a superb collection of recordings on behalf of a musician friend. It's a must for the serious collector. You can see details on the Sales Page via Jazz Extras.
24/10/09 - I wonder how many of you listened to trumpeter Ian Royle on www.fabfmspain.com on Tuesday evening this week from the Costa Blanca. Ian told listeners his life story, from school band to brass band to jazz band. If you didn't tune in to hear it, you can download the broadcast from http://tinyurl.com/yzqhxqx, courtesy of John Westwood, but only until Tuesday. Let me know if you want it after that.
24/10/09 - G'day Teds Many thanks for last night's concert, although missing Ken, the trumpet gap was well filled by the appearance from somewhere in the wilds of Wales by the incredible talent (at 17!) of Jamie Brownfield. Now I'm reassured that it's not all Doom AND Gloom, as Fred describes that long correspondence, and that Traditional Jazz will continue after the eventual demise of our current bands! There is talent out there, and although the character of the music may change there will still be the capability of playing the type of music that we have followed since at least the 1950's. This morning. still hearing the sound of that trumpet, I googled Jamie Brownfield and learned a lot more, this lad's no raw beginner, even at 17! May I suggest you either google that name, or go to www.jamiebrownfield.co.uk Maybe then you'll see, and hear the shape of things to come". - John Bratby
24/10/09 - Amy Roberts will be joining Sue Parish to launch a new jazz session in Hornby on Friday Nov 13th. (Obviously not superstitious). The band also includes pianist Tom Kincaid and bassist Frank Grime. The concert is the opening event of an exciting season of jazz presented by the Village Trust in Hornby's historic and beautifully refurbished Village Institute. Doors open at 7.30pm for an 8pm start, and tickets are £10 / £8 concessions, available by ringing 015242 22227.
24/10/09 - Hi, Fred, Just to report that The Savannah Jazz Band gave a typically top class performance at Widnes RUFC on Friday to an appreciative audience of 80 or so fans. Reed player Rod Chambers was unavailable and Mike Hayler from Sandbach was an excellent dep. This year is the Savannah's 30th anniversary - many congratulations to them for all the enjoyment they have given to jazz fans everywhere over all those years. - Terry Birkinhead.
24/10/09 - Kath Parkinson writes, "Re: your news about the death of Clinton Ford - This well known entertainer and longtime Isle of Man resident has died at the age of 77, following a long illness. He was born Ian George Harrison in Salford Lancashire on November 4th 1931. Clinton Ford's repertoire spanned Jazz, Country and comic songs such as "The Old Bazaar in Cairo" and " Fan Dance Fanny" In the 1960's he was a regular performer on the BBC Radio 'Easy Beat' programme and on television in the 'Good Old Days'. An Isle of Man resident for the past 25 years, he also fronted summer season shows at the Gaiety Theatre in Douglas and was a regular for many years at the Isle of Man Jazz Festival. Clinton Ford leaves a wife Maggie, four children and eight grandchildren" My husband Ken Parkinson ( of Manchester and Blackpool & Fylde Jazz Scene) knew him well and with others they became the Benny Emsley Jazz Band in Manchester. The line up was - Benny Emsley - Trumpet, Cliff Emsley /Seth Samuels - Drums, Ken Parkinson - Trombone, Ian Harrison - Banjo/Guiter/ Occasional Cornet, Ivan Goldberg - Clarinet, Gill Parry - Bass. Within this band Ian headed up a skiffle group. Whilst with this band Ian left to turn professional and became Clinton Ford. This was all in the 1950's. I have just spoken to Clinton Ford's widow Maggie. The arrangements are as follows:- Funeral on Friday next - 30th October 2009 at Douglas Crematorium. Isle of Man. Family flowers only but any donations to the Guide Dogs for the Blind. Ken and I will certainly be attending but Maggie fully appreciates that age, distance, weather and time of the year makes it impossible for many people".
22/10/09 - Regarding my comments on the B.B.C. Last Monday's prog. on Benny Goodman coincided with my drive home from our gig at Bolton and, yes, I found it excellent. We have all read about Goodman's attitudes to people and it was interesting to hear about them from the people involved. Thanks to Bob Blinston for reminding me of B.B.C. iPlayer. It must be my age. - Moe Green.
21/10/09 - "Hi Fred, I've had a sad call from Jasmine Lawrence to-day. After a long Illness Clinton Ford passed away this morning. Clint as you everyone knows was a long time associate of the Merseysippi Jazz Band from the early Cavern days. We offer our sincere condolences to his Family and friends in the I. O. M" - Pete Darwin.
21/10/09 - Hi Fred. With regret I announce the abrupt end of the Dixie Kings residency at the Victoria Hotel Rainhill. Tonight's unavoidable cancellation (Due to an electrical fault), coincided with the licensees commercial decision to end the weekly sessions. The band would like to thank our fans for their support over many jazz filled years. - Harold Troughton.
21/10/09 - It's the turn of Jack Teagarden fans this week. I've just put a stack of his records on The Jukebox, which you can access from the main menu. My tastes are getting wider in my own age, I wouldn't have dreamed of playing these when I was a lad, I am quite enjoying them now!
21/10/09 - Hi Fred, it might be worth mentioning to Moe Green and other jazz fans who like early nights, that the Benny Goodman programme is available on BBC iPlayer during the following week. I have just listened to the first episode and found it fascinating. - Bob Blinston.
20/10/09 - Savannah were great on Saturday at Ayr Jazz Club - so good that I went to Dumfries to hear them again on Sunday - how's that for commitment? - Stuart
19/10/09 - "Hi Fred, just seen Bob Blinston's letter about Benny Goodman. What is it with the BBC ? They seem to assume that if you are a jazz fan you don't go to bed until the early hours of the morning". - Moe Green. (That's what Barbara says about musicians when it gets to 9-30pm - Fred)
19/10/09 - "Dear Fred, There was a very pleasant service to remember Charlie Gall on Sunday in Georgetown. Many of his friends, musical as well as those associated with his Gaelic activities, (Charlie was a very proud Scotsman), were there. Brian Tower and his Hot five Jazzmakers played some of Charlie's favourite tunes, sans trumpet, very moving. Among the other musical friends there were old band members, Peter Sagerman, Jimmy Purdie and Harry Ellis, along with Chris Daniels and Mickey Lewis from the Climax Jazz Band and a sprightly Malcie Higgins. All in all a good sendoff for a talented and much loved gentleman who will be missed". - Mike Walmsley
19/10/09 - "Hi Fred. this might be a bit late, bur Radio 2 are starting a six part programme on Benny Goodman at 11-30 tonight, Monday 19th Oct." - Bob Blinston
17/10/09 - I asked Steve Lister if the The Lune Valley Vintage Jazz Band was still playing at the Tithebarn every 3rd Sunday in the month. Steve said, "We are still getting a pleasing number of people coming to listen to us, including, for the last couple of months, Mike Lovell and Barrie Marshall!. What is also pleasing is that there are always a few new faces and some who are obviously going early to eat and then stay on to listen. When we first started most of those who were eating left pretty soon after we started playing. Robert, the landlord always seems pleased with the evening so long may it last in these days of increasing pub closures"
17/10/09 - "I attended Dave's funeral at Landican crematorium, Birkenhead yesterday and it was a marvellous tribute to a fine jazz musician and a great guy. A band of 30 musicians led by a Band Marshall paraded from the cemetery gates down to the chapel, playing "Just a closer walk with Thee". Along with the tributes during the service, Geoff Parker (clarinet) and Roy Gregory (banjo) accompanied the congregation singing "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Abide with me", and the full band played "The Saints" following exit from the chapel. It says much for Dave's popularity that so many musicians paid their respects, representing 14 different bands, and there were a further 7 musicians in the congregation, including professional jazz pianist Bert Lamb, a life-long friend of Dave's who journeyed from Wiltshire for the day to pay his respects. A wonderful tribute to Dave, who will be a great loss to his family and the jazz fraternity". - Terry Birkinhead.
17/10/09 - There's to be a memorial concert to celebrate the life of Campbell Burnap, which will take place at The 100 Club, 100 Oxford Street, London on Sunday 22nd November, not the 23rd as previously posted. Thanks to Des Hopkins for spotting it. Details via Jazz Extras
17/10/09 - I've just seen that The Savannah Jazz Band are to play at Thornton Little Theatre on Friday 20th November at 7pm. This used to be a very popular lunchtime venue for jazz, but the booking became very irregular and inconsistent after Eddie Simpson and latterly Mike Lovell were no longer involved. Organisation became the responsibility of Wyre Borough Council, and consequently the jazz faded away. Let's hope that there are plenty of visitors to this event which in turn sparks a revival.
16/10/09 - "Dear Fred, I was depping on Wednesday with The Blue Magnolia Jazz Orchestra at The Shrimper, Southport and the place was full to bursting - the partitions have been removed giving the room a brighter and less cluttered appearance. The audience was really buoyant and enthusiastic and it was a thoroughly enjoyable night. And I realise that the great picture of Dave Renton appearing on his tributes page was taken there - the ceiling gave it away. Meanwhile I'm looking forward to playing next week at the Shrimper; It's The DeeSide Dixies. (Whoopie! as Terry Brunt would say)" - Malcolm Hogarth (You're quite right Malcolm, I took it there a year ago. - Fred)
15/10/09 - "Sad news indeed on the passing of Charlie Gall . He gave me my first pro job ,back in 1960. Other members of the band were , Pete Mawford , Joe Smith , John Howlett Matt Paton and myself. Later Cyril Preston joined , and assumed the leadership. Charlie was a strong lead trumpet ,and we had great times touring "the old country" with Clinton Ford. Rest in Peace Charlie". - Chris Mitchell
15/10/09 - Malcolm Hogarth is looking for a copy of the sheet music for Big Ben Boogie plus Song and Dance sheet music albums of various music companies. See The Wants Page via Jazz Extras for more details.
14/10/09 - Time for some fresh records on the jukebox. This week it's the turn of the Original Dixieland Jazz Band. I missed their live appearance, so here's he next best thing. Click on Jukebox in the Main Menu
14/10/09 - "Hi Fred, Following on from the lack of pianos in Blackpool, (News 22.04.09), I played last night on a fine upright piano in The Baths Hotel, Macclesfield, with Adrian Wilkinson on clarinet and sax. I believe they have live music each Tuesday evening, and it's a great pub to visit - warm friendly atmosphere with nice customers, good beers, wonderful freshly prepared pizzas, good newspapers, even proper bar billiards with skittles (I haven't seen one of these tables for years) and its only been reopened for 13 weeks having been closed for some time beforehand. If we want to keep live music it's a pub well worth supporting. There should be a directory of Pubs with Pianos, so perhaps readers might let us know of them - maybe it will lead to a new page for your site". - Malcolm Hogarth. (Good idea, let me know if you know of any - Fred)
14/10/09 - On Sunday 18th October, Jamie Brownfield (17) is fronting the Severnside Jazz Band on trumpet at The Four Crosses, Bicton, Shrewsbury (8:30pm start). The band's drummer, Cliff Crockett (95), will beat out 'That Rhythm on The Drum'. Now where else would you find a band with such an age range? There's room to stand, if readers would like to come along, and we encourage cheering!- Malcolm Hogarth
14/10/09 - "Hi Fred. Just want to say thanks for your very informative emails on the jazz scene. I have recently returned from The Bude Jazz Festival. What a wonderful week the best I have attended of the 10 years I have been going. Wonderful music & what a friendly happy atmosphere. Thanks again" - Nick Waine.
13/10/09 - Sorry to have to give you the unhappy news that Charlie Gall passed away on Saturday afternoon. There will be a memorial service on Sunday October 18th at the Jones Funeral Home, 11852 Trafalgar Road, Georgetown (905-877-3631) from 12 noon to 1.00 pm. Charlie played trumpet with the Hot Five Jazzmakers for three years until his retirement from jazz in September 1996. He will be well remembered by Canadian jazz fans as a member of the Metro Stompers and subsequently the leader of "Dr McJazz", which disbanded in 1993. In his native Scotland, he was a founder-member, with Jim McHarg, of the famous "Clyde Valley Stompers". In London, England he led his own fully professional touring band - "The Charlie Gall Jazzmen" - which did a series of Radio shows. Charlie played alongside Louis Armstrong, Earl Hines and Lonnie Johnson, to name just a few of the jazz greats from the formative years of jazz. He was for many years a key figure in the development of the Canadian jazz scene. - Trevor Hodgson, Canada
13/10/09 - Tributes continue to flow in for Dave Renton which are reproduced on the Tribute Page, the latest one from Peter Swensson. 12/10/09 - "Last Friday saw the 33rd event staged by the Wirral Jazz Friends for Claire House Children's Hospice, with the Big Easy Vintage Big Band and it's "Off shoots" at Heswall Royal British Legion. This brilliant Wirral 13-piece band led by Terry Perry drew an audience of 200, and as usual the dance floor was usually full - Strictly Come Dancing eat your heart out ! Guest reed player George Galway was superb, particularly in his 2 show piece slots, and vocalist Linda Lee was impressive. The "Off shoots" 6-piece bands formed from within the big band gave 2 Dixieland sessions during the evening to much acclaim, all-in-all a superb evening's jazz. £1,400 was raised on the night, bringing the total for Claire House since 1996 to £28,600, Many thanks to the band, the Royal British Legion, Clive, Peter & Jill and the Wirral Jazz Friends and all those who regularly give their generous support". - Terry Birkinhead
12/10/09 - The demise of Hyde CC jazz club has been put off for a month as Sammy Rimington's gig on 25th November is still to go ahead. Tickets available from Peter Hardman at the club @ £7 (Tel : 0161-368-3078).
12/10/09 - Not often we hear of jazz being played in Kirkham, but there's a 'good do' coming up this week - The High Society Jazz Band are playing at Kirkham Conservative Club on Friday evening, doors open at 7pm for 7-30pm and the admission charge of £10 includes Hot Pot and Apple Pie - lead me on!
12/10/09 - Many Happy Returns of the day to Fylde Coast bass player, Gerry Clayton.
11/10/09 - "Hi Fred , I have been reading your web pages for some time now , to keep up to date on the "scene" in the UK. Last week I was playing in Cala d`Or ,Majorca with The Harlem Ramblers , a Swiss band , and we had the great pleasure of lady singer Mave Pinkney , still going strong and She joined with us for two evenings. She enjoyed a great success , and is very popular on the holiday island". - (Mave Pinkney is from Derby, and now living in Mallorca - FB).
10/10/09 - I've started a tribute page for Dave Renton, and comments and memories have been added. It's listed on the "Remembering" page, which you can access via Jazz Extras
09/10/09 - Hello Fred, Have just read the stunning and very sad news about Dave Renton, a fine musician whom I am glad to have had the pleasure of knowing since the early sixties, when we both played in the same Wirral-based bands. In more recent times he established a fine rapport with many German audiences for is linguistic presentation, playing and singing on several tours there with Delta Jazz as well as entertaining jazz audiences at various venues every week around the Wirral for many years. He will indeed be very sadly missed by all jazz musicians, fans, friends & family. Alan Davies Cornwall
09/10/09
- I had a
phone call today from Peter Swenson, followed up by an email
from Phil Renton to tell me that his uncle, trombonist Dave
Renton had died last night. I understand that Dave was a founder
member of the Original Panama Jazz Band,
and played regularly with the Savoy
Jazzmen and the Parade Jazz Band.
08/10/08 - It would seem that Phil Yates is not on his own in his views on jazz club comfort. The debate continues in What Makes a Good Jazz Club
08/10/08 - Hi Fred, Following your recent article regarding the pros and cons of Jazz clubs. The Yorkshire Stompers are playing at the newly refurbished Gabriel's this Sunday 11th Oct., and I look forward to giving you a report on comfort, acoustics and most important Beer! We've got our passports, visas and medical certificates and look forward with trepidation to the journey "o'er`top t'wilds of Rochdale" If you and Barbara are in the area do come and have a drink with us (all Yorkshire men aren't tight, honest!) Regards Terry Binns
08/10/09 - Many Happy Returns of the day today to 'Father of British Jazz' pianist George Webb who celebrates his 92nd birthday today. George formed his Dixielanders in 1943. Tomorrow it's the turn of NW trumpeter Doug Whaley to celebrate his birthday. Doug fought his way back after several strokes, by learning to play left handed. Have a good day Doug.
08/10/09 - Phil Yates asks, "Who needs comfort?", in the 'What makes a good jazz club' debate. Do you agree with him? If not, let me know. You can ask to remain anonymous if you wish.
07/10/09 - Muted Jazz are back at The Duke of York in Romiley - once a month on the first Wednesday of each month.
07/10/09 - The postal disruption seems to have affected the delivery of the October edition of Just Jazz Magazine, which has only just arrived. You can see the contents via Jazz Extras
07/10/09 - A new jazz club has opened in St.
Helens. It's at Eccleston
Social Club,
07/10/09 - Eagley Jazz Club gig list has been updated.
07/10/09 - "Hi Fred, Lovely to meet with you and Barbara on Saturday, a very enjoyable Saturday in the City again after all these years, and you did it again, a report plus photo by the time we got up! Just watched a fantastic Jazz programme on Sky arts, part of a series I understand, and we missed last night by going to a big band session in Royton which was wonderful, but could have recorded the jazz if I had known it was on" - Carole Fletcher. Roy Cansdale also writes, "I have recently opted for Sky Satellite TV and have been delighted with the Jazz programmes on Sky Arts. Sky Arts 2 are currently showing all 12 parts of Ken Burns great series at 7pm each evening, repeated at 1am, and 12 noon the following day. Sorry, part 1 ( up to 1917) , has already concluded, but there's 11 still to come! Details in the Radio Times are scant- I had to go to the Sky Arts website to discover that the complete series is being shown".
06/10/09 - Why is it some jazz clubs are closing down (e.g. Werneth Low), and some are becoming ever more popular? One man who thinks he's found the answer is Malcolm Bridge. Malcolm has sent me an interesting email on the subject and one I hope will generate a lot of interest so that some of the failing clubs could possibly take note and turn around their fortunes. There's already an existing article on the site by Les Brown about the success of Boston Spa jazz club in Yorkshire, and how they attribute their success. What are your thoughts on the subject? What does it take to drag you out on a cold winter's night? Is it just the music? You can access Malcolm's email via Jazz Extras.
06/10/09 - The Cafe Olé sessions run by John Muskett at the Blundell Arms in Horwich have come to an end
06/10/09
- One
of my favourite visiting bands came to Eagley Jazz Club last
night - New Orleans
Heat, and they didn't disappoint, except perhaps the purists
who thought they should be sat down. Freda Barker, who for
years ran Blakey's Jazz Club in Blackburn, celebrates her 83rd
birthday today, so we took her along to Eagley last night and
she thoroughly enjoyed it, and to top the evening, the band gave
her one of their CDs as a present. It was because of our trip to
see Manchester Jazz on Saturday night as well, and not wanting
to have 'too much of a good thing', that we gave Sunday night's
jazz at The Crofters, a miss. A shame really because Dave Mott's
Jazz Classics were there, with his top class musicians, and
there was a good crowd of 90. There were also some familiar
faces that made a first time visit - vocalist Sue Parish from
Lancaster and Singer/broadcaster Tony Davis from Wallasey -
sorry to have missed you folks. I gather that Derek Daniels also
got his wish of drinks waiters after all, despite the hotel
initially rejecting the idea (News item 28/09/09), and they were
kept busy all night. This place seems to be going from strength
to strength and Derek says the new manager is now "On my
wavelength".
04/10/09 - Out of this web site's area, but a bargain's a bargain no matter where it is - This from Barry Prime - Sunday 11th October 1.00 - 5.15 - little-publicised event in Rotherham as part of the Rotherham Arts Festival. 04/10/09 - The Hot Jazz Channel has been updated, see web page for latest information
04/10/09 - "I was very sorry to hear that George Penman had died. My association with George goes back 55 years (wow!) when he and I formed a jazz band in Glasgow, he played piano then, I was on banjo/guitar. We had great times playing jazz venues in The West of Scotland, Glasgow and Edinburgh. Kath and I would like to offer our condolences to his family and friends". - John Gordon
04/10/09 - Dumfries Jazz Club gig list has been updated.
03/10/09
- Around 100
people turned up at The Urbis in the centre of Manchester
tonight to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Mart
Rodger Manchester Jazz, as Mart brought Traditional Jazz
back to the city centre. It's around 50 years ago since I last
visited a jazz venue in the city (The Bodega) and it was a far
cry from this place. It was a fantastic night and a well chosen
and varied programme that I'm sure was thoroughly enjoyed by all
who came, and it was good to see a number of young faces in the
crowd too. It was equally good to meet up with some of the site
visitors after Mart publicly welcomed Barbara and I, and thanked
me for the work I did. There's been considerable discussion on
this site as to what makes a good jazz
band, well I can only say watch and listen to Mart's band
- the answers are all there. Well done Mart.
03/10/09 - You may recall a new name on the band scene recently - Jazz Quintessence played at The Richmond (now moved to The Shrimper) in Southport on 2nd September. This band, led by Andrew MacKenzie, was videoed on the night, so if you missed them, here's your second chance. Andrew says, "After a slightly shaky start (my fault entirely, my nerves got the better of me) we eventually got into our groove. Hope you like the results:- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Be91RKaaow : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YBJIAaGgXc : and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UPTwkmVpGkv . In the set I tried to give everyone something to listen to. The first clip is Blue Monk (Thelonious Monk), the second is Watermelon Man (Herbie Hancock) and the third is Strike Up The Band (George and Ira Gershwin).
03/10/09 - Nigel Cretney is no longer with Mart Rodger Manchester Jazz on a permanent basis. Mart says, "During his illness I have made every effort to support him in spite of the uncertainty of availability over three years. We have parted company in a friendly manner and he has asked to be considered whenever Chris Pendlebury cannot make a gig. This confirms Chris is with us permanently".
03/10/09 - I'm hearing that people are struggling to get their deposits back from the failed Island Complex in St. Annes where Jazz On The Island was due to take place in November. Mike Lovell tells me that he was approached by the Island to provide the music, and their Marketing Manager agreed to come up with a package including accommodation. Mike wasn't involved in the nuts and bolts of it, and he isn't sure if people paid the complex or the hotels as he was only provided with a telephone number and the names of the hotels involved. One thing is for certain, it seems it's impossible to contact The Island, which is not unknown in these cases. It's cruel if they took deposits knowing the place was to shut, but that's not unknown either. We wish those unfortunate jazzers the best of luck and hope they can eventually get their money back.
03/10/09 - I'm pleased to tell you Bob Pickersgill got off to a promising start at the York Hotel last night. I only managed about half an hour visit in support, and I can see from experienced players around him (including Paul Guppy) it will gel into a nice little band with a different sound. I like Bob's idea of inviting other musicians to come and 'sit in', this has worked well with Barrie's Sun Street Stompers Sunday sessions in Lancaster over many years. Mike Dennison, the landlord of only three years at the York, has recently won the 'Best Pub in Town' award and tells me he is going to do everything he can to support the jazz club and keep it as a regular Friday feature. Good going and thanks Mike. There may not have been many real jazzers in ,but there are plenty out there and it will build up as word gets around! Norman Gibson
03/10/09 - One of the site's regular contributors, John Westwood who now lives in Spain, has agreed to chat with Eric Taylor on-air next Tuesday at fABfm about how and why he got into the Jazz scene. It will be aired 7 - 8pm (UK time) at www.realbenidorm.net/fabfm.html
02/10/09 - "Hi Fred, I just found out from Katie Clachan who runs the Ayr Festival that George Penman died about 2 weeks ago. George ran the George Penman Jazzmen, a very popular band north of the border. We were over to Scotland to see the band on their 50th anniversary just before he passed away, and I noticed he did not look good then. The band is still going to carry on. they have a lot of fans in England so perhaps you could pass the message on" - George Smyth
01/10/09 - First the good news, it's the moment you've been waiting for - I've just put the first pile of many Louis Armstrong records on the Jukebox. Get listening now. There may be some you haven't heard before. You can access the jukebox from the Main Menu
01/10/09 - It's a bad start to October, with two lots of bad news. Stan Ward writes, "I have just got home from Hyde Cricket Club with the Savannah. During the interval Peter announced that the October gig would be the last as dwindling support has made it no longer viable to have jazz on the last Wednesday of the month. The Chicago Teddy Bears will be the last band to appear there on October 28th". I have yet to hear what's happening about the Sammy Rimmington appearance on 25th November.
01/10/09 - The other bit of bad news is that The Island Leisure Complex in St Annes has gone into receivership and subsequently the Jazz Weekend in November there is cancelled. Mike Lovell tells me, " I went down today to talk to one of the hotels offering accommodation, to ask them whether we could move the weekend into their hotel and ballroom but they are already booked up with their own guests and of course it is too close to market the weekend effectively. I will do my best to find an alternative venue in the same area for next year". Mike does offer some good news though, "All the rooms for the Jazz Weekend at The North Euston Hotel in Fleetwood in December are now sold out. There are still a few tickets available for Dinner/Jazz at £29.95 and locals can still come in to listen to the Jazz at £12.00 per person. Tickets are available at the Hotel or can be booked over the phone on 01253 876525. If it is as successful as the last Jazz Weekend there we should be in for a great weekend. Of course those who will be disappointed in not hearing Enrico Tomasso at THE ISLAND will be able to hear him at our next Jazz Weekend at The North Euston Hotel on Good Friday and Easter Saturday next year.
30/09/09 - Hi Fred, the Crofters at Garstang seems a special case as it puts entertainment on during the band's interval. (News item 28/09) In this instance it makes sense to have two breaks so the audience can socialize and keep the bar happy but speaking personally I prefer two one hour spots with a 30 min. break. You can build up the heat and excitement more. Taking a 20min. break and then playing for a final 1/2 hour seems to lose the momentum. Regarding the Band on the Wall. When I was a young lad coming home from the city centre my bus used to pass the pub and I always sat on the left side of the upper deck to see the drum kit halfway up the wall. I was, of course, far too young too venture in. Moe Green.
30/09/09 - Brian Hudson writes, "Some of the Jazznorthwest circle may be interested in this You Tube item which records one of the sessions at Liverpool University's Rhythm Club Reunion held at Leverstock Green, Herts in October last year". It's available via Reminiscing, follow the Liverpool University Jazz Band link and scroll down.
30/09/09 - Didsbury Cricket Club gig list has been updated.
28/09/09 - We are looking forward to next Saturday night ( 3rd October), when Mart Rodger Manchester Jazz celebrates its 25th Anniversary. Mart thought it would be a good reason to bring Traditional Jazz back into the City, so the band is giving a performance at The Urbis Centre, Cathedral Gardens, Manchester. The doors will open at 7.00pm and the gig starts at 7.30pm. Advance tickets are £5 which has to be one of the best bargain for a city centre gig for some time. Tickets are available from the Urbis Centre shop or from Mart at P. O. Box 4, Disley, Stockport. SK12 2NH. Cheques payable to M. Rodger. If you don't get them in advance they'll cost you £7 on the door. There's talk of moving the National Football Museum from here in Preston to the Urbis Centre, so I might have to do a bit of sabotage whilst I'm there!
28/09/09 - "Hi Fred, after over 17 years with the band Wilf Jenkinson has sadly decided to quit as a band member although he still will be available for dep work. We are going to miss him and would like to record here our gratitude for his considerable contribution to the band and his company and wit during all those years. This leaves us with a vacancy for a banjo/guitarist and/or a pianist (these days I should perhaps say keyboard). Anyone interested should give me a call (Phone number 01257 451362)" -- Richard Knock - Yarrow River Jazz Band
28/09/09 - I'm grateful to Rod Bleackley, at fab4southport.com who bought a batch of programmes a week or so back purely to get ONE of them, which was at the Gaumont, Southport back in the mid-50s, and nothing to do with jazz. He came across one he thought I might be interested in and sent me a scan of it. It's for a concert in February 1953 for an amazing line-up at Liverpool Stadium. It's worth a look, just go to Reminiscing in Jazz Extras and select Liverpool Stadium from the drop down menu.
28/09/09 - "Dear Fred, May I through your columns express my appreciation for all those who supported the band (The Tame Valley Stompers) by coming along to hear us at the Glossop Jazz Festival last weekend. Thank you" - Noel Broadgate
28/09/09 - Those of you who go to the Crofters Jazz Club near Garstang will notice a change this Sunday when Dave Mott's Jazz Classics are set to play. Derek Daniels has decided to have two intervals instead of the two one hour sets. This means that musicians have a maximum of 40 minutes continuous playing rather than an hour, which should appeal to them. At the last event, Derek introduced two young people who entertained during the single interval and I gather that the hotel were none too pleased as this resulted in a drop in interval sales. A suggestion that they could provide a floor waiter was rejected by the hotel on the basis that the jazzers, ".... don't like being interrupted during the music much, so it is difficult to come in and serve them". Equally I received an email from one visitor who said that many jazzers enjoy the social aspect of the club and the lack of the usual length of interval prevented it. Derek is hoping the new arrangement of two 40 minute sets and two 20 minute intervals followed by a final half hour set, will appeal to all sides. Do you have a view on intervals at Jazz venues?
28/09/09 - Those of you who have read my personal page will know that I got hooked on trad jazz back in the late 50's early 60's and then moved on to other forms of music. When I returned to the fold in the early 90's, one of the first venues I went to with Barbara was Uncle Tom's Cabin where we heard the Festival Jazzmen playing there. We continued to visit there for several weeks, and I recall seeing Tommy Burton there in October 1996. It had a bit of a short lived revival back in 2006, but on Tuesday the cabin is once again hosting jazz, this time with Mike Lovel's 6-in-a-bar, and I understand there will be hotpot available. If it's a nice night you can even stroll through the illuminaions.
28/09/09 - Hello Fred, the BBC TV Local News at 6.30pm last week did a piece on the re-opening of The Band on the Wall. About 60 years ago, as a schoolboy, I played piano there on a weekly gig, with trumpeter, the late Alan Jackson. Then, the band (including the piano), was perched on a shelf about 5 feet off the floor. It was still an ordinary pub called The George and Dragon and many of the customers were not jazz fans, but just regular pub clients, as there was no entry charge. Some of the customers were quite rough and I remember several fights. The theory amongst the musicians was that the band was on the wall to protect them from trouble. Ted Calvert the singer and Moondog the drummer appeared with us sometimes. This was before it became a full time jazz venue. Does anyone else remember anything about those early years? Barrie Quilliam
28/09/09 - "Dear Fred, We, that is Dennis Armstrong's Great Northern Jazz Band, played last night at Rochdale Jazz Club at its new venue, Mayfield Sports Club, and I'd like to say what a warm friendly visit it turned out to be: As we musicians arrived we were greeted by a young lady and offered a brew of tea or coffee while we set up. Then at the start of the session we were charmingly introduced by the aforementioned young lady, Catherine Hague, who turned out to be the new club steward. Then as the band played its third number, Frankly Street Blues, Catherine took to the dance floor and danced a highly professional accompaniment, the sort of performance you'd more likely see on the tele than on the Jazz Club dance floor. It turns out she is a dance teacher, and later I persuaded her to dance to my boogie woogie solo, Joy Ride. So musicians and punters alike, you're in for a treat at Rochdale Jazz Club, and we look forward to being invited to play there again. Keep up the good work Rochdale". - Malcolm Hogarth
27/09/09 - "Re the mouldy old figs who may not dig the swing of Tipitana then for them it obviously don't mean a thing, which is a shame because I say " It Don't Mean A Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing " - Unwin Nunns
27/09/09 - "Hi Fred, Thanks for the website. My father Bob Terry was a founding member of the Salt City Jazz Men, guitar and banjo mostly. He left the band in 1977 when we emigrated to Houston, Texas. We were close enough to New Orleans that he was able to visit and listen to trad jazz in its home city. We returned to the UK in 1979 but he never rejoined the Salt City as he had been replaced by Mark Challinor on Banjo. My father now resides in Eastern France and no longer plays but does enjoy listening to jazz. I'm hoping I can track down some recordings of the band from the 1970's so I can send them over for his iPod. I remember many Friday and Saturday evenings as a child sat in a dark corner of working mens clubs and pubs listening to the band play. Thanks again for the site, and - as far as I know - the only photo of my father in the band that I have found. Best regards Nick Terry". Does anyone have any recordings? - Fred
27/09/09 - Barbara & I considered going to a local eatery, The Sparling, at Barton, Preston" last Friday 25th, as we know from experience that the food has been good, and an added bonus was that The Mike Lovell Four were playing. However we don't like to eat after 7-30pm or 8pm at the latest, and checking What's On, revealed that the music didn't start until 9pm, so we went elsewhere as we didn't want to hang about having eaten. Mike told me this morning that, "We actually started at 7.30 on Friday to catch the early birds...but there were very few of them. I should have changed it on the calendar". C'est la vie!
27/09/09 - I received an email on the 24th entitled "News Release from the Pasadena Roof Orchestra, For Immediate Release". and advising me of the Pasadena Rood Orchestra tour. I noted two venues in the North West, and I put a page together with edited samples from a promo CD, "Roots of Swing". It was only when I came to add the dates that I realised they had gone past for most of us. At the bottom of the email it said, "Sent 4th September 2009", no doubt by flying pig! Nevertheless you can still see the page and listen to the music by clicking here.
27/09/09 - "Hi Fred. Just back from Torquay to find the following message from the Boheme Ragtime band. They are NOT the Budapest band who let so many people down last year. This band is brilliant (well Mike Durham wouldn't bring them over otherwise). If any of your vast readership can help find a suitable gig on Thurs 8th July (within 2 or 3 achievable hours drive of Newcastle) they'll be guaranteed an excellent, varied and highly entertaining performance. Tone and I are heading off for Montana tomorrow so I'm rushing to contact a few people before we go". - Judy Eames
27/09/09 - All the copies of the DVD "It's Trad Dad", have now gone, and I have two people waiting. I've just ordered four more as they currently have a special deal for three or more before October 1st, but when they've gone that could be it for a long time. The current price is $29 + $9 p&p which equates to £24 or more. Check out my price, and save up to 20%. Could make a nice Christmas present. There's a link from Jazz Extras
27/09/09 - Bob Pickersgill mentioned to me last week about the possibility of a new Jazz club in Morecambe, well Bob tells me its happening. It's starting on Friday 2nd. Oct. at The York Hotel, York Bridge, Morecambe at 8pm. with a view to doing it monthly. Bob says, "It will be a band I can put together on the night, but with regularity as far as I can, called The Bay City Strollers. It's free admission, no membership, hopefully regular Fridays. Food is available, & so are beds for those who are unable to make it home. It's open to other musicians & singers to sit in, in the second half".
27/09/09 - "Hello Fred, Just to put the record straight and to scotch any rumours which seem to abound at the moment. Maghull Jazz Club and Particularly Maghull Town Hall are undergoing some changes with the opening of the new attached leisure centre etc. I have had meetings with The Town Clerk who assures me that Maghull Jazz Club dates are secure and as per planned programme, at least till the end of 2010. My hire of the function room has been guaranteed. Christmas Party Tickets now on sale. Here's to the next 24 years. Yippee" - Harry Swinburne.
26/09/09 - Terry Birkenhead has set up another jazz evening at Widnes RUFC. The Savannah Jazz Band are there on Friday 23rd October, 8.30 to 11.00 pm, admission £6. (contact Terry on 01925 226271)
25/09/09 - "Hello Fred, This morning, on Sky News, they did a short piece about the fiftieth anniversary of Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club. Quite nice, but a bit short. The anchor man (Mark Longhurst), quite keen to show how "hip" he was, rounded off the item by telling us that Ronnie actually played saxophone on a Beatles' record! WOW!!!! So he didn't waste all of his talent just being one of our best ever jazzers". - Frank.Slater
24/09/09 - It's the turn of The Stompers for the Jukebox. This week I thought I'd dig out the records whose bands all contained the name "Stompers" from Jug Bands to George Lewis, they are stacked up ready to go on the Jukebox page. I've had problems with the needle sticking, so I'm sorry if that's happening to you. A click on the page refresh icon should free it.
23/09/09 - Hi Fred Just listened to TIPITINA they are a good swinging band and deserve a fair hearing. O K ,Some of the mouldy figs might not dig it but a lot will certainly enjoy a swinging evening. Best Regards Terry Binns - P. S. Thanks for a great Website
22/09/09 - Michael Baines, landlord of The Eagle & Child, on Singleton Road at Weeton near Kirkham, PR4 3NB, 01253 836230, is trying to get regular jazz on the agenda. After discussion, he accepts it's not Traditional Jazz as we know it, but he thinks, " Tipitina might be closer to your kind of music, who we have playing on Tuesday 13th October, we had them last month and went down quite well". I've just found them on "My Space" and he might be right. Have a listen to them at http://www.myspace.com/tipitinaartist and see what you think. It would appear they are a Preston group who tour the country. I've just been listening to "I Wish I Was In New Orleans". I might give it a go, I don't expect to see many Zimmer frames there though.
22/09/09 - Mike Lovell's 6-in-a-bar web page has been updated to include a sample from their latest CD which I mentioned on 20/09/09.
22/09/09 - After a slight hiccup on the pc, I had to restore a backed up copy of the mailing list. If anybody got missed off during this process, please let me know, the latest mailing will go out tonight.
22/09/09 - As from the 7th October, "Jazz At The Richmond" in Southport will become "Jazz At The Shrimper" again, as Joan Bell moves the jazz back to this pub, which some of the regulars reckon, does better food. John Hallam & His Jazztet will start the new venue off in style.
21/09/09 - Hi Fred, I was stunned to read Moe Green was 87 and thought better to use the Oil of Ulay more. He still looks good for 70yrs and congratulations to him. Last night we went to George Galway at the Broadoak. He is marvellous and a wicked sense of humour. The show is put together with a singer called Johnnie Rich who is one of the nicest men. The whole evening with the band was lovely. Also as you know Mart's special do at the Urbis is another night to plan for. I was talking to Mart the other morning and said Fred Burnett site is great to read but I have never seen him. He said, "Oh he is coming to the Urbis with his wife Barbara", and he will point you out. My husband was brought up in Liverpool and was taken to gigs with John Rubin who we occasionally see about. Also Sid Levin who used to play at the White House in Prestbury and different places. I trust you have heard of them. Anyway keep going with all your info. Regards DEE. Look forward to meeting you both - Fred
21/09/09 - "Hi Fred. In response to Derek Dalton's enquiry on Mike Cotton, he is still around and I last heard him with Andy Cooper's Euro Top 8 a couple of years ago. He is strongly featured on an excellent DVD of Andy's band, which also includes John Barnes, recorded in 2002 at Europa Park, Rust. Regarding CD's of the original Mike Cotton band I don't think there is anything available although Paul Adams of Lake records was toying with the idea of a reissue, I think from the Landsdowne series. I believe his concern was the need to sell at least 500 copies to make it viable. Perhaps he could be persuaded to take the plunge because they were undoubtedly a superb outfit and great fun at live performances. Best regards. - Ian Boyes". "I played a gig in South Wales with Barry Palser's Savoy Jazz Band just under a year ago, with Mike Cotton 'depping' on trumpet. He claimed that, through playing with Acker Bilk, he had got out of the habit of playing multiple sets, but you would never have known that to hear or see him. His playing was first-rate, and he was clearly still playing with Acker at that time; in fact, if I remember rightly, they had a gig together the following day. Let's hope, for his sake, it was a short one! - Allan Wilcox."
21/09/09 - Your comment re Willie Entwistle's arrangements for Mike Lovell's band 'struck a chord'. A while back I deputised on a gig with 'Cafe Society'. Some of the arrangements were by Willie and others by Colin Ball. Both of them are superb arrangers in the 20's and 30's style. All I can say is "Thank goodness Daddy taught me how to sight read!'. - Ian Royle
21/09/09 - The DVDs - "It's Trad Dad", have now all gone I'm afraid, and I've got a waiting list. If you missed yours there may be another chance if I get sufficient orders. Just let me know. Click here for details
20/09/09 - Mike Lovell gave me a copy of 6-in-a-bar latest CD the other night. I try to stay impartial on these things, but I had to say "WOW"! when the first track started, and by the end of the second one I was saying to Barbara, that this has to be the best CD Mike has ever made. With Colin Turner's bass saxophone it reminded me very much of the Cotton Club recordings, and Willie Entwistle has done some terrific arrangements. Rosie has come on leaps and bounds since I first heard her, her voice getting stronger and more powerful. I'll put some tracks on soon for you to hear. It's heavy on vocals, with two great vocalists in the band, Chris Howes and Rosie, but not prolonged to the extent they become overdone.
20/09/09 - The Wirral Jazz Friends are presenting their 33rd Charity Jazz Night for Claire House Children's Hospice on 9th October at Heswall British Legion.
19/09/09 - I wonder if anyone in your vast network could help? I am trying to track down a leadsheet or chord chart for a number that Danny Barker wrote for his wife Blue Lu Barker called either "Don't You Make Me High" or "Don't You Feel My Leg". Grateful, as ever - Wil Robinson
18/09/09 - Two Manchester musicians share birthdays today. Alan Dent & Mike Reddin. Many Happy Returns to them both.
16/09/09 - What Makes a Good Band - A year ago David Fox raised this subject and it's continued to attract attention over the last 12 months. John Muskett has added further comment, prompted by the recent discussion resulting from the track of Ian Royle playing a Beatles number on the Home Page.
16/09/09 - "Hi Fred, regarding your comment on 14/09/09 that after announcing my 87th.birthday few people contested it, I did look in the mirror. Apart from no hair, wrinkles, a couple of missing teeth and a beer belly I look exactly as I did when I was 21". - Moe Green.
16/09/09 - I've just taken off the Bix Beiderbecke records and replaced them with a stack of Jelly Roll Morton recordings. Go to The Jukebox page and listen
16/09/09 - New Venue in Preston on 24th September. The Silver Bell Band are playing at a nice pub, the Ancient Oak at Merrytrees Lane, Preston. See What's On for details
16/09/09 - Good News. I've bitten the bullet and ordered 10 DVDs of the film "It's Trad Dad". They are only available from the USA, and by buying them in bulk, and even after paying customs duty, I'm able to offer them cheaper than buying direct. Many of your favourite British Trad Bands from the 60's are featured. Click here for more details. I've already got requests for five of them from my previous mention on 01/09/09, so it will have to be "first come first served" I'm afraid. Dare I say An ideal Christmas Present?
15/09/09 - Back in April this year I published a letter "Speaking the unspeakable" which was an anonymous musician's plea to be paid a decent rate for the job. Surprisingly, possibly because of its controversial nature, it received only one comment putting forward the promoter's point of view. John Muskett is attempting to get it back on its feet by adding his thoughts. You can read "Speaking the unspeakable" via Jazz Extras.
15/09/09 - From Australia, Derek Dalton writes, "Hi Fred, I was wondering if Mike Cotton was still on trumpet with Acker Bilk, there is a You-Tube clip with the ''Mike Cotton Jazzmen'' playing some tune ( it is the Morecambe and Wise show back in 1962 ) they don't say what the tune is called. Are there any CDs of the ''Mike Cotton Jazzmen'' around as he was always one of my favourites, I met him over in Adelaide, South Australia when I was playing with Peter Hoopers Royal Garden Jazzband as a support act to Acker & Kenny Ball?".
15/09/09 - "Fred, I know 87 is a good age for an active drummer but Cliff Crockett with the Severnside Jazz Band in Shrewsbury is 95 (96 next February). I shall guesting with them next Sunday at the 4 crosses Bicton Heath Nr Montford Bridge on the old A5 at 8.30pm. Also guesting is John Everett with whom I first played in 1968 with the late Ken Ingram. Can anyone beat 95 and still be an active member of a regular band." - Jon Penn
14/09/09 - The Home Page at www.jazznorthwest.co.uk has just been updated to feature a track from the Old Fashioned Love Band's latest CD - I Hope Gabriel Likes My Music".
14/09/09 - 'God Bless the Child', an evening with Billie Holiday, was performed by Katrina Beckford at the Dukes' Round theatre in Lancaster at the weekend. A great enactment, very powerful and superb singing. Worth catching if it is being repeated anywhere else in the NW. - Norman Gibson
14/09/09 - Keith Rae is looking for a 3/4 size double bass not laminated and with an ebony fingerboard, in good condition. Contact details on the Wants Page via Jazz Extras
14/09/09 - Many Happy Returns of the day tomorrow, 15th September, to Harold Troughton, reed player with the Blue Magnolia Jass Orchestra
14/09/09 - The Old Fashioned Love Band have released their latest CD called "I Hope Gabriel Likes My Music". I'm sure he will. It's also serves as a poignant tribute to Mike Turner as this was the last recording he maid with the band before he died. Mike Pembroke handed me a copy when the band played at Crofters Jazz Club earlier this month. You can find details of the CD and how to order it, my clicking on the band's web page on this site.
14/09/09
- We
went to Rochdale Jazz Club last night
to see Brian Carrick's Heritage Hall Stompers. Always a popular
visitor to the North West, I expected the place to be packed
out, but with around 65 people there, Tony Sheldon seemed to be
quite happy about it. My guess is that like us, many visitors
were driving around trying to find the way in. Faced with the
gates shut to cars and a big No Entry sign, yet many cars parked
inside, I managed to squeeze through the gate to discover that
the access road had been changed since we last went. If you are
thinking of visiting Rochdale Jazz Club
and it's a while since you've been, check out the map that
I've put on the Rochdale Jazz Club web
page. Access is at the far end of Keswick Street.
14/09/09 - On 27/08/09 I stated - "Moe Green, drummer with the Old Fashioned Love Band celebrates his 87th birthday tomorrow (28th.). Those who know him will find it hard to believe! ". So they should, Moe sent me that message and I challenged it, knowing full well that Moe celebrates his 70th birthday on Dec 11 this year. Moe said, "With the outbreak of birthdays reported on your site I thought it might be a bit of a laff to include it", and dared me to put it on. I dared, and Stan Ward reminded me about it last night, making me realise I'd forgotten to retract it. Moe said he received a congratulatory email from Don Bridgewood and didn't know whether to be pleased or insulted! True to form, Joe Silmon was hot on the ball sending me an URGENT correction email, and Bernie Hives cast doubt on it as the band played at his wedding. As they were the only two emails I received, I think Moe had better start checking the mirror !!
13/09/09 - Dumfries Jazz Club gig list has been updated

11/09/09 - Dear Fred, I know your web page is primarily NW England but you do cover some of Scotland too. This is to let any old friends of Charlie Gall,( the original trumpet player with The Clyde Valley Stompers), know that he is gravely ill. I am sure he would welcome words of encouragement from any of his old band buddies, they can e-mail him at galljazz * yahoo.ca (replace " * " with "@"). I am an old friend of Charlie's and have played many an enjoyable gig with him over the years in Toronto - Mike Walmsley
11/09/09 - The Ayr Jazz Club gig list has been updated to reflect some last minute changes to the September programme.
11/09/09 - Congratulations & Best Wishes to Chicago Teddybears' banjo and guitarist, Tony Ormesher, who celebrates his birthday tomorrow, 12th September.
10/09/09 - Plea for help from the Internet radio show "The Hot Jazz Channel" with 80,000 to 100,000 listeners every month. No doubt due to the credit squeeze, record labels have cut down on the number of review CDs they send out. Consequently we're short of British jazz tracks to play this autumn and winter. We would welcome therefore receiving loan copies of any new CDs list members may have made in order to broadcast tracks and write reviews for our web site. We're happy to return CDs if you wish - we're not looking for "freebies" just trying to help the music. Thanks - Brian Harvey - brian@radiojazz.co.uk
09/09/09 - The Jukebox has just been cleaned out and a pile of 78s are stacked up waiting for you. This week it's the turn of Bix Beiderbecke, so all you Bix fans, click on Jukebox in the main menu and Enjoy!

08/09/09 - There's a new UK Internet Jazz Radio Station opening at 12 noon on 12th October. You can read about it at www.ukjazzradio.com. I had my doubts about how much exposure Traditional Jazz will get, but Geoff Inwood has been in touch and they told him, "We have two programmes starting October that cover this totally plus specials as and when they come up........ Every genre of jazz will be covered.....The first is a programme from our presenter Bob Draper. He runs a Storyville jazz band in Bracknell..... we are doing some live recordings in a couple of weeks time.. the show will be a mix of old and new recordings plus news on gigs. Bob is an expert on this genre and a great broadcaster. If your contacts have any news on gigs or events please ask then to email me on brian@ukjazzradio.com The second programme is 12 part history of jazz starting November..... this will take in the pre-history of jazz, new Orleans and Chicago times.......".
08/09/09 - The Crofters Jazz Club at Garstang was 'buzzing' on Sunday night when The Old Fashioned Love Band took to the stage, not least when Moe Green finished his drum solo and several ladies stood up and cheered with a standing ovation, but no items of clothing came his way as far as I could see. An added bonus for the audience was during the interval when two young people took turns to entertain them, and for the second time running my camera batteries failed so I wasn't able to video it. I've learned my lesson now! Vocalist Sara Creeney (13) and Jack Daniels on trumpet proved to be a hit with the audience, prompting these comments from musicians - "I thought Sara had a great jazz voice with a good feel for the music... far more mature than her 19 years. Jack was very confident for 13 and obviously a good reader... he had a nice tone as well." - Mike Lovell. "I thought they were both very good indeed. Apart from having an excellent voice Sara showed good stage presence, and her personality came through. Jack also has very good potential as an instrumentalist... hope he keeps up the good work." - Peter Eddowes. "It was great to hear youngsters tackling jazz standards. It gives one hope. Jack Daniels had a nice tone and for his age a good technique. Sara was confident and assured on the microphone, with a lovely voice, but I would have liked to hear her sing an up tempo number. All in all they deserve to make their mark." - Moe Green.
06/09/09- The Manchester Jazz Society programme has been updated until March 2010.
06/09/09 - The Arnside jazz night on 30 Sept (in aid of St. John's Hospice) with the High Society Jazz Band, is all sold out, please do not turn up without Tickets.
06/09/09 - Carlisle Jazz Club gig list has been updated
06/09/09 - Record collector David Tayketch needs some help with a record in his possession. It's a sample record by DAVE CAREY, a drummer born in 1914. David says, "The tracks are on a old 45 on the Philips white sample label and I can't find them listed anywhere on the web as being on a record, The tunes are DRUM BEAT & COME LIGHT YOUR FIRE, and in fact I've no clue as to what year they might have been recorded. Anybody got any information about it?".
06/09/09 - The Wilbraham Arms gig list has been updated until the end of the year.
03/09/09 - "Don and I have just read your news update where you mention Sara Creeney. I put the name into "Google" and her web site came up. From there it led me to "You Tube" - and WOW - can she sing!! There are, I think, eleven videos altogether. Those going to the Crofters are in for an interval treat!!". - Margaret Ashworth.

03/09/09
-
Visitors to the Crofters Jazz Club
near Garstang, are in for a treat this coming Sunday. Following
requests from members, promoter Derek Daniels' 13 year old son
Jack is set to play a couple of trumpet numbers again. This time
Jack will play George Gershwin's "Embraceable You" and "Foggy
Day (in London town)".
In keeping with an attempt to encourage young people, Crofters
Jazz are also pleased to introduce 19 year old Sara Creeney,
who will sing two numbers - "What a Difference a Day
Makes" and " That Old Devil Called Love".
The two youngsters will appear as the Old
Fashioned Love Band takes an interval break.
03/09/09 - Mark Austin suggests, "Your readers might like to know that they can add their gigs to http://www.british-jazz.com and http://www.smart-arts.co.uk completely free of charge by registering at http://smartarts.phpnet.us/login.html. This is an interactive website that allows musicians, venue managers and promoters to add gigs directly to the main sites".
03/09/09 - Three new Jazz By The Lake weekends have been added to the Jazz Festivals & Weekends page
02/09/09 - A number of NW musicians are appearing at Boston Spa Jazz Club, just over the Pennines, looking at the recent new programme that arrived in my Inbox. You can see a copy at http://www.jazzinthespa.com/
02/09/09 - Fats Waller proved to be very popular on the last jukebox with 400 visits recorded. Let's see how this week's artist gets on, there's a stack of Kid Ory recordings on the jukebox now, so enjoy.
02/09/09 - Re. Mart Rodger's comment about Moondog. I remember him playing in one of my bands around 50 years ago and he was a very good drummer if a bit loud. His eccentric appearance was a good feature for the band. I went to his house where there were extensive murals inside. He got his nickname as it was thought he resembled, in appearance and behavior, an oddball blind American musician, composer, cosmologist and inventor of several musical instruments who was in the news at that time. The original Moondog lived on the streets of New York for 30 years and was known as The Viking of 6th Avenue. He wore his own home-made clothes based on his interpretation of the Norse God Thor. . Barrie Quilliam
02/09/09 - Mike Lovell's 6-in-a-bar + 1 were in the studio last Thursday recording a new CD. I've heard one track on Facebook, (an Al Bowlley number - Hang Out the Stars in Indiana) which Rosie Harrison put on, and it sounded great, even though it's a pre mix version. I'll let you know as soon as the CD has been released. I asked Mike about it, and he said, "This time we recorded it in a studio as opposed to a live recording. Although I have only heard a first mix so far I am very pleased with it. Rosie and I will be mixing it along with the sound engineer next week so we should have it out there for sale in a couple of weeks. There are several new numbers on it that are rarely heard, along with some popular ones and I am very proud of it, Willie Entwistle has done some great arrangements, which makes everything so much more interesting".
02/09/09 - A lovely story from Sue Parish - "I'm back at my desk after a lovely break away - a week and a bit in Shropshire, and a fascinating few days up in Durham, including B and B in two different castles. Marvellous! We had fun at the Gillow on Monday. I walked in to set up and found Harold Salisbury and his family sat having dinner. I was a bit overwhelmed and very honoured at him coming to see me play instead of the other way round! Happily he had his sax with him, and kindly joined us for quite a few numbers in both sets, including a really beautiful solo feature on Body and Soul, where I had the pleasure of sitting out and just listening. The really funny thing was that just the day before I'd been at the Gillow Sunday session and discussing with another jazz fan how sad it was that we'd not seen Harold in Lancaster for ages! His mind reading skills must be very impressive. Always an advantage when working with singers, of course....!".
02/09/09 - Many Happy Returns of the day tomorrow, 4th Sept, to two musicians, North West bass player Howard Worthington and to Midlands trumpeter Tony Davis who has played in the NW many times with the Zenith Hot Stompers and now playing with the Big Bear Stompers, Harlem and partner Judy Eames' Kaminsky Connection.

02/09/09 - The latest edition of Just Jazz Magazine has just arrived through the letterbox. You can find out what's in it via Jazz Extras
01/09/09 - On 03/07/09 I mentioned a DVD that Tony Lightfoot had tracked down to the one and only source in the USA at - www.thevideobeat.com . It was called "It's Trad Dad" (a.k.a. RING-A-DING RHYTHM) 1962, and is a classic piece of memorabilia. It features the Chris Barber Band, Terry Lightfoot with Roy Williams on trombone, The Temperance Seven, Acker Bilk, Kenny Ball, Bob Wallis etc. and Tony tells me it cost him £25.60 after currency exchange. Having seen it, I have now ordered 10 copies, which I've been able to get at a discount, and I should be able to sell them for around £18 + postage. I've already got 4 names of people interested, and in due course I'll put more details on the site. In the meantime it will be first come first served. I should warn you that the story line and acting is as exciting as the two titles. There's also a bonus track of a 'fly on the wall' documentary of the Gene Vincent tour of 1969 (remember Be-Bop-A-Lula?). It's not top quality, but it's an amazing insight of how he struggled to get paid by promoters, being down to 19 old pennies at one stage, and unable to buy a sandwich! No change there then!
01/09/09 - It is obvious from recent messages on site that we have many visitors who appreciate other jazz forms. Perhaps you could make it known that Ritary Gaguenetti is in the UK soon and will be making one NW appearance at Briars Hall Hotel Ormskirk on Thurs. 22 Oct. He will be backed by his own gypsy trio and supported by a great little gypsy band 'Hot Club of Knotty Ash' Ticket price will be £12 or ring Paul 01704-840954 or Steve 0151-2592313 mention me and get advance tickets for £10 !!!! Regards Norman Gibson, 'Heysham Heritage Hall'
01/09/09 - The web site continues to attract plenty of visitors with 4393 visits to the Home Page recorded last month.
31/08/09 - The Mart Rodger M/cr Jazz web site at http://www.manchesterjazz.co.uk/ has been updated with a new front page and gig list update.
31/08/09 - There's a story going round that Jazz at The Richmond in Southport is to close. Joan Lester has rung me to say the stories are quite unfounded, and jazz will continue as always.
31/08/09 - Someone equally chuffed with his offspring, Ian Royle sent me a link of "My son Tony on trumpet playing with a band that rivals my old mate Tim Johnson (sorry T. J. !)". It's a polished performance with Robin Phillips' 6-piece swing band, and well worth watching at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTAM9UKozL4. Thanks Ian. I was reading son Tony's blog, quite amused when he said, " "My interests are mainly music due to my dad forcing a trumpet and a tune a day book one at me at the age of 5". No pressure there then Ian?
30/08/09 - "Having created such an interesting subject with Bob Clarke the great violinist I was casting my mind back. Does anyone remember Moondog who played drums in the Manchester area? I was in his band "Moondog and His Red Hot Puppies" at the same time as Mart Rodger's Jazz Aces and I recall a rehearsal at a pub on Oldham Street when we played "Peanut Vendor" I think his real surname was Ashworth and he was a brilliant artist and specialised in murals. He had become involved with the criminal element in Manchester which resulted in his life being terminated. This was a great shame because he was an excellent drummer in the same style of drumming as Moe Green.". - Mart Rodger
30/08/09 - John Meehan, leader of the Savannah Jazz Band, has every reason to feel 'chuffed' this weekend. His grandson, Adam Purcell, won a bronze medal in the under 15 years WORLD Windsurfing championships in Weymouth yesterday. John didn't quite qualify, or I'm sure he would have had a go too!
30/08/09 - Peter Boswell writes, "I have just heard that we (The Black Horse Jazz Band), will be back at The Royal Oak Settle next Tuesday the 1st September and every Tuesday following. Alan Duckles is depping for me on the 1st as I hope to be at the Bude Jazz Festival for a few days. New management have taken over and we wish them well. We also thank Jan who managed The Oak for several years for her strong support of the jazz and wish her good luck. We are very grateful to the manager of the Talbot for hosting the Jazz for the last two weeks enabling continuity of the Tuesday sessions and to our supporters for coming and filling all the seats".
29/08/09 - Another of Dickie Hawdon's students, Paul Lacey, has added his memories to the Dickie Hawdon Tribute Page.
29/08/09 - There's a problem with the Microsoft Player on all the band pages of the site at the moment. The music player graphic comes from a Microsoft Web Site, and it appears to be down at the moment, hopefully it's only a short term problem.
29/08/09 - Sean Moyses has updated his radio station with a fresh playlist. It includes rarities from Andy Leggett's jazz collection. He has digitized some old records which are real gems. Graeme Bell's Jazzband from 1947 for example. Sean says, "If you wish to share some of your jazz collection send me an MP3 CD via www.seanmoyses.com!". You can hear the radio station by going to www.seanmoyses.com and follow the link or go directly to http://www.live365.com/stations/seanmoyses.
29/08/09 - The Swan with Two Necks in Chorley is now open again after the dispute with the local Council: The Jazz will now be on again from tomorrow, Sunday 30th onwards, from 2-00 p. m. to 5-00 p. m. featuring the popular Rae Owen's Quintet
27/08/09 -The New Riverside Jazz Band web page has been updated.
27/08/09 - Moe Green, drummer with the Old Fashioned Love Band celebrates his 87th birthday tomorrow (28th.). Those who know him will find it hard to believe!
26/08/09 - The Jukebox has just been updated with a set of Fats Waller recordings. He made so many I've saved plenty for a later date. You can access The Jukebox from the main menu which is on the next page
25/08/09 - Mike McLachlan and Andrew MacKenzie, two musicians in the same band (WirrOrleans Jazz Band) share birthdays tomorrow, August the 26th! So is that unique? Many Happy Returns chaps.
24/08/09 - Fans of pianist Tom Kincaid, who plays with the Dave Donohoe Band, may be interested to know that he will be appearing at the Eagle and Child, Singleton Road, Weeton, PR4 3NB, 8-30pm on Tuesday September 8th. This time it may not be traditional jazz as it features jazz stars Debbie Wilson and Simon Spillett a vocal and saxophone team, who are accompanied by a trio led by Tom. It also features bassist Frank Grime and drummer Luke Flowers. Further details from Michael Baines 01253 836230, or info@theeagleandchild.co.uk.
24/08/09 - "Just in case it is of interest, and has slipped the net, - so to speak, - I see from John Chilton´s Who´s Who of British Jazz that Pete King MBE, of Ronnie Scott´s Club was born in Bow, London, on 23rd August 1929, which adds up to him being 80 yesterday". - James Hall
23/08/09 - Many Happy Returns of the day tomorrow, 24th August, to band leader, promoter, musician and vocalist - Wallasey's own Tony Davis.

20/08/09 - Many Happy Returns of the day tomorrow (21st Aug) to Frank Robinson, pianist and founder member of the Merseysippi Jazz Band, who is still playing with them.
19/08/09 - John Petters is clearly frustrated with the BBC, and the lack of jazz on Radio 2. Rather than grumble, he's been doing something about it, and he invites you to do something about it too. I've reproduced his email in full on the site, it's too large for this page. You can click here or access it via Jazz Extras
19/08/09 - I've just put a stack of new recordings on The Jukebox. This week it's the turn of Alex Welsh. You can access 'My Jukebox' from the main menu. Enjoy!
19/09//09 - "Picking up on previous threads on style, quality, repertoire, predictability, can I say how I've enjoyed excerpts of the work of Alan Duckles/Barrie Marshall combos (not forgetting the rhythm section)? I don't think I've ever met Alan or Barrie, nor heard them play live, but like the approach. It's good that audiences appreciate them, as their music makes a change from the heavily British Trad/British New Orleans influences that a number of bands display". - John Muskett
18/08/09 - I've just received details of an exciting event coming to the small village of Warton near Carnforth on 18th September. It's a chance to relive the Magical Music of the Swing Era and the Golden Age of American Song at Warton Village Hall with John Petter's Swing Band. Fellow radio ham John (call sign G3YPZ), has his own ever changing packed web site, and it amazes me how he manages to maintain www.traditional-jazz.com, run a band, takes on the job of full time promoter, and still manages to find time to keep up with his amateur radio hobby, something I've had to let slide.
17/08/09 - The Black Horse Jazz Band are playing at the Talbot in Settle on Tuesday night, instead of the Royal Oak. They hope to return in the near future, so watch this space.
17/08/09 - One of the nicest aspects of the site is being able to put old friends back in touch. I had one such email today from someone wanting to contact Ros Glickman to renew a friendship after 45 years. Ros replied, "Fred there must be a million people in this country - and no doubt other countries too - who kiss the ground you walk on. The doors that have been opened must be incredible. What joy it all brings. Thank you". I've suggested to Barbara that she could practice!
17/08/09 - Two trumpets in excellent condition have just been listed on the Sales Page, which you can access via Jazz Extras
16/08/09 - Jim Buck and Malcolm Hogarth suggest we all visit http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/livemusicevents/ and sign our names. You'll find out what it's about when you get there.
15/08/09 - Many Happy Returns of the day tomorrow (16/08/09), to one of the North West's finest reed players and gentleman - Joe Silmon.
15/08/09 - "We had a great Kelsall Jazz Festival last weekend", writes Arthur Pedder, "Plenty of sunshine and great music from all the musicians involved we would also like to thank all the people who support the festival who came from all over the country as far afield as Surrey, Gateshead, Carlisle, Wales and the Midlands. The landlord at the Morris Dancer has set a provisional date for next year, which will be weekend 6th 7th 8th of August 2010".
15/08/09 - Fred, a bit more on that well known saga - "I Once Knew Bobby Clarke" (see news 05/08/09). In the early 60s I had a double act with Glen Purssord, wife of Denny. The 'crowd' in those days was Clarke, Disley, Denny Purssord, Keith Cooper and another great fiddle player, Johnny van Derrick who, incidentally, played at my wedding 22 years ago with Nils Solberg. We all worked at different venues in London, but after work would congregate at various haunts and do what you did when you'd just played three hours of music - play more. For a while the scene was at the Negresco and one night Keith Cooper didn't appear. Unforgivable! We had a serious round table discussion over a noggin' or three as to where he might be and then Denny said "Maybe he went home after work?" We looked at him in amazement - home? HOME??!! Nobody went home after work. A few of the guys started to have a bit of a play and Denny went to the money-in-the-slot phone. (Nobody had mobiles in those days.) Keith answered and Denny just held the receiver out. Keith said "Where?", Denny said "Negresco" and 10 minutes later Cooper walked in, pulled up a chair and played. Those Were The Days My Friend." - Ros Glickman, Barton on Sea.
14/08/09 - Many Happy Returns of the day tomorrow (15th Aug) to drummer Alan Davies. Alan and his wife moved from the North West to Cornwall in 2007, and likes to keep in touch with the North West through this web site.
14/08/09 - Vernon Addison tells me, "Had a great night last night (Carlisle Jazz Club). The room was packed for Keith Nichols, Spats Langham and Norman Field. The music was superb". This is backed up by Mike Lovell who says, "Keith Nichols went down a storm, great reception for his first time at Carlisle Jazz Club last night", He invited up Dave Savill and myself towards the end of the second set which seemed to go down well with the audience, and a good advert for our band as we are up there on the 17th September".
14/08/09 - Les Paul, the virtuoso guitarist and inventor whose solid-body electric guitar and recording studio innovations changed the course of 20th-century popular music, died yesterday in White Plains. . He was 94. The cause was complications of pneumonia, the Gibson Guitar Corporation announced.
13/08/09 - The Quayside Hot Stompers are the latest North West band to featured playing on the Home Page at www.jazznorthwest.co.uk
12/08/09 - I think the web site has just lost another reader. I had been receiving quite a few emails from one reader in the USA which were non jazz related. The recent one included a flyer from the League of American voters which started by saying, "I am writing to you to ask for your help in what might be the most important fight of our lives – defeating Obama’s plans to destroy our health care system in America". Not having the time to read in excess of 150 lines of text, I tried to be discrete by saying, "Whilst it is nice to hear from you, American politics is not something I can influence here in the UK. I already get lots and lots of emails to do with my jazz web site, and it would help considerably if you could consider removing me from your circulation list, as it is difficult for me to find the time to give these type of emails the attention they no doubt deserve". Back came the reply, "I was not asking you to influence American politics, just to respond to the idea that Brits are having their health care rationed & beaurocrats deciding their fate. However given your reply, maybe that is not such a bad idea!!!. Thank you for confirming the reasons why we left the UK in the first place!!! Consider yourself removed". I guess that's me told!
12/08/09 - The Jukebox has just been updated. I don't normally do requests, but on my recent trip to Surrey, I met Mick Welstead who runs at Jazz at Preston Cross Hotel and The Old Barn Hall at Gt Bookham near Leatherhead. Mick recently asked me if I had any Kid Bastien recordings, so no sooner said than done. Good choice Mick.
12/08/09 - "Couldn't agree more with the news flash yesterday about the Kelsall weekend. Five absolutely rock-solid bands playing in a very pleasant upstairs room at the Morris Dancer pub, with good beer, great food, and very helpful staff. Full marks to Arthur Pedder and all the staff at the Morris Dancer for organising a great show - can't wait for next year". - Barry Pryme
11/08/09 - Paul Speakman writes, "On Sunday 16th August the Black Bull pub in St Helens is hosting a "Jazz on a summers afternoon" mini jazz festival. The music will begin at 2pm and finish at 730 ish. At the moment there are 6 bands booked ranging from Traditional (x2), to Vocal Trio ,West Coast Jazz Octet, the Black Bull Jazz Jammers (Monday night modern funksters) and finished off by the Easystreet Big Band. Should be something for everyone. If the weather gods are favourable then events will take place in the beer garden, if its raining then its inside in the pub. Must be worth coming to see an 18 piece big band in a bay window. The Black Bull is on Knowsley Road in St Helens, opposite the Saints Rugby Ground. The mini jazz festival is being held to mark that its almost the first anniversary of the pub holding a regular Monday night jazz jam Also just like to say hello to John Muskett (my surveying lecturer 1991 to 1995). .
11/08/09 - An interesting story from Tony Pringle, who emailed me looking for trombonist Pete McGuire, and I was able to point him to www.jazz-clubs-worldwide.com which Peter runs . "I first met Peter at Yatesbury when I was doing my National Service if the RAF. We formed a band on the camp called the Stonehenge City Stompers. I think the pianist and the banjoist were from up north, but cannot recall their names - it was 50 years ago. We played on the camp as the interval band to Mick Mulligan, and also played quite a lot in Bath area jazz pubs during 1959. We had a driver with a VW bus - he was from Ireland and we knew him as Paddy! The clarinet player sounded like Wally Fawkes and came from Glasgow. I saw him years later - he came backstage when the Black Eagles were playing in Dublin back in 1984. I was told that there was a John Flint wanted to see me - it meant nothing because I just knew him as Jock. Peter and I also bought a 1934 Austin 7. I remember that it did 45 mpg, 45 miles to the pint of oil and 45 mph flat out. We used to make smoke like a destroyer on manoeuvres. Consequently the Wiltshire police pulled us over and we discovered that we both were only learner rivers. Oops".
10/08/09 - From Sue Parish - "Another Bob Clarke story, seeing as you seem to be making a collection! A few years ago Jon Moore and I were invited by Diz Disley to join him onstage at a festival in Suffolk. Afterwards Diz was reminiscing about having played with Bob, who was by then living in the Lake District. So we invited Diz to come and stay with us in Lancaster for the weekend, and meet up with Bob. They both sat in for a storming lunchtime session with the Sun Street Stompers at the John O Gaunt, and then Jon and I and bassist Paul Guppy did a gig with them at Lancaster's Gregson Centre in the evening. Great fun - and great music - Bob lifted the rafters with his amazing playing, and Diz was equally blistering. And there were some marvellous stories told later that night when Diz and Bob sat chatting until the wee small hours!".
10/08/09 - I was pleased to hear that the Jazz Weekend at Kelsall was a great success and that there will be another event next year. Arthur Pedder helped to organise the event with the hotel, and the success of the weekend will enable him to relax and enjoy his birthday tomorrow. Many Happy Returns Arthur.
10/08/09 - Many Happy Returns of the day today, to Frank Lowe, bass player with the Pendle Jazzmen
09/08/09 - Soon after hearing about Blackpool's Stanley Park cafe closing, I hear that the Swan with Two Necks in Chorley has closed. According to the Chorley Guardian, the pub has been forced to close by the council after complaints over noise. The Swan with Two Necks has been shut since Thursday 30th July when Chorley Council's application for a closure order was successful. I can assure you the excessive noise wasn't coming from Rae Owen's Quintet who played there on Sunday afternoons, but there had been reports in the local press previously of late night noise. Unfortunately it means the end of jazz there unless the dispute is settled soon.
09/08/09 - Assuming it is the same Bob Clarke - Violin " Born Scotland c. 1930, Shipwright by trade. In resident trio at Cottage Club, 1950's, also in Diz Disley's String Quintet. Duo with Danny Pursford, then worked in Switzerland, Russia and Iceland. Long residency in Paris, then Las Vegas. Back in UK, then international bookings followed by long residency at the Crazy Horse, in Paris 1965 to 73. Settled in Sussex and continued to play regularly with top London musicians. Later moved back to Scotland and ran hotel " All the above from John Chiltons "Who's who of British Jazz" ( a valuable tome ! ) But how does he get from there, via Grasmere etc, to Kirkham ? Anyway must have been a real treat - I remember hearing him on the radio. - Roy Swift
09/08/09 - More listeners around the world - "Thanks for all the good stuff on your website. I was able to play your George Lewis recordings without a problem using Internet Explorer. Jim Whiteside, San Francisco ( nee Blackpool )". Also "Jukebox coming in loud and clear on Internet Explorer 8-I am listening to it as I write". - Bert Thompson, California. And "Thank you for your wonderful site, and, obviously, all the wonderful work you put in. You provide so many fantastic memories for some of us, and create new ones all round". - James Hall (Mallorca Spain)
09/08/09 - Just realised as I type today's date that at 9 seconds past 09:08 this morning, it was 09:08:09 on 09/08/09. Bet you're glad I told you that! I knew about 07/08/09 before you email back.
08/08/09 - After 4.5 years the Mike Lovell Allstars are no longer playing at the Art Deco Cafe in Stanley Park. After the previous tenants left and the council took it over, the band were asked to stay on until another tenant was found. A tenant has now been found and has told Mike that for the time being he is not continuing jazz on a Sunday afternoon as he doesn't think it is cost effective. This is quite surprising as there hasn't been a bad Sunday in all the time the band has been playing there. Even in the depths of winter, Sunday afternoons have always drawn a good crowd, and most of the customers have had a Sunday Roast or something else hot off the menu. Maybe the new tenants will see that it was a mistake to cancel something without seeing for themselves that Sundays, out of all the days in the week, was the busiest with many of the tables pre-booked.
08/08/09 - "Hi Fred. A bit more information on Bob Clarke. He is Scottish, he did play with Diz Disley's Soho String Quintet in the 1950's and worked all over Europe including Russia during the 60's and he was resident at the Crazy Horse in Paris from 1965 till 1973. Obviously still active. If you want to hear what he sounded like in 1956 he is featured on Lake LACD133 Sandy's Sidemen track 18 "Mouse Party". Its an absolute belter similar, by the sound of things, to his performance with Mart". - Ian Boyes.
08/08/09 - So far all the replies have been positive about the jukebox, so that's good. Typical comments I received are like this one from Glen Page - "Hi Fred, I did not have any problems with the Lewis jukebox in Vancouver Canada. I forwarded the link to a couple of other folks and they did not experience any difficulties either. I continue to enjoy your wonderful contribution to the preservation of this kind of music. I am particularly interested in items relating to the Manchester and area scene in the late 50s, which was when I received my education with regards to the whole N. O. scene. I continue to relay information to some poor folks who have to live in the South when I hear of gigs that I know will interest them. Most recently I managed to refer them to a gig at the 100 Club that had John Barnes playing, he was the musician who firmly cemented my interest in the music when he was with the Zenith Six.".
08/08/09 - "Just a note to say I too am off to stepping hill hospital tomorrow. Anyone interested in buying a second hand knee can contact me!! - Cheers, John Stavordale. drummer extraordinaire & eccentric upside down ladder dancer".
08/08/09 - "In response to the queries about Bob Clarke, I spent an enjoyable session watching him in Keswick this year playing along with John Hallam. Apparently he now lives in Preston and he is a regular at Keswick every year, I always make a point of seeing him. For some years now I have been videoing him playing with different musicians and shortly I intend to put some of them on U tube as I believe he does not get the exposure he deserves, and he also is a very good singer. I hope this information helps.". - George Smyth
07/08/09 - "Hi Fred, I don't have Bob Clarke's telephone number but I do know he lives opposite the Derby Arms in Treales and when we play there he often comes across and sits in with us... a great violinist with some great stories. In fact we are doing our next dinner/jazz evening there on Friday 28th August... he's sure to be there". - Mike Lovell
07/08/09 - Apologies to all those who have been trying the Jukebox with little success. I'm afraid it's a bit hit and miss at the moment. Yesterday I could access it with Firefox Web Browser, but not with Internet Explorer. Today it was the other way round, with Firefox offering me a new Adobe Flash plugin as a solution. I downloaded that and both are working for me. I would appreciate feedback from those of you who have tried the George Lewis recordings on the jukebox, were you able to hear them? There have been over 200 attempts by various people to access it since George went on, but I don't know if it worked for you or not.
07/08/09 - Many Happy Returns of the day today to Mark Challinor, leader of the Wabash Jazzmen
05/08/09
- If
you've been looking down the latest "Jazz
At The Richmond" (Southport) gig list, you may have
seen the name "Jazz Quintessence" and wondered about
it. Well wonder no more, it's a band headed by trombone player Andrew
MacKenzie. Andrew tells me, "If all goes well this could turn into an ambitious project (for me at least). Not only is it the first band that I am heading up by myself, but I'm hoping that it will grow into something a bit special and different. In the future I'm hoping to have some arrangements for the band and extend the scope musically so we can play in most styles from 1920's Chicago style to
1950's-60's Gerry Mulligan/Chet Baker/Stan Getz et al. I'd also like to invite anyone who wants to come to the Richmond on the
2nd of September to do so, the more the merrier, I'll be very pleased to see anyone".
05/08/09 - Hi Fred I have many wonderful memories of hearing a Scot named Bob Clark playing Stefan Grappelli type music with Diz Disley, Denny Purssord, Keith Cooper and Johnny Watkins, many years ago in Soho. He was incredible then and if it does turn out to be the same bloke I'm not surprised he is still raising the roof. There was another fellow around at the same time who did amazing things with a banjo. I never knew his real name.. Just Banjo George and I think he came here to Oz many moons ago. Anyone remember him? ". - Adrienne Ferst.
05/08/09 - Best Wishes to Tony Davis (Birkenhead), who tells me he's "Just popping into Wrightington Hossy for a few days".
05/08/09 - In response to Mart Rodger's query in 'news', the violinist he mentions is almost certainly Bob Clarke, who has moved from Grasmere to the Blackpool area. Unfortunately, I don't have a current contact number, but maybe one of your readers does? - Bruce Carnaffin
05/08/09 - From Mart Rodger - "Hi Fred, 80th birthdays are becoming a regular feature for gigs. We played for such an event in Kirkham last Sunday which went swingingly good and the quartet consisted of Eric Brierley/trombone, Charlie Bentley/banjo, Colin Smith/double bass and myself. One of the Kirkham locals turned up with his violin and sat in. He had played in London years ago with George Chisholm, Alan Ganley, Sandy Brown and many other top jazzers. His talent was brilliant and he "brought the roof off" when the audience applauded his playing. I only recall his Christian name which is Bob and anyone in that area should include him into a performance some time and I can find his full name and telephone number. Warning to clarinet players - take your "A" clarinet if you have one as he plays a lot in A, E and D as well as F & Bb". Anybody know Bob's name?
04/08/09 - I've just checked the jukebox and I see it's back. So hopefully all you George Lewis fans can have another go. I'll leave it on for a week, fingers crossed Deezer won't mess it up again. Click on Jukebox from the main menu.
04/08/09 - I got this sobering thought from Allan Bentham today - "Look after yourself, Fred. There is no-one who could "dep" for you".
04/08/09 - Can you help with this request? "Dear Fred, I have read your Jazz North West pages with some considerable interest, since they bring back memories of how things were in Manchester before I left the UK (for good, it seems) about 40 years ago. More to the point, I went to Moseley Hall school in Cheadle with Terry Brunt and Ian Royle; in fact we were part of the school's first (and probably only) jazz band. (I played banjo at that time.) Our bass player was Larry Hirst. Larry and I lost contact shortly after we both left school in the summer of 1960. and I went away to university. I vaguely remember that Larry went into insurance as an apprentice actuary. I also remember him playing with Keith Pendlebury in the intervals at the Friday night sessions in the Manchester Jazz Club at the Clarendon Hotel in Oxford Road (long since demolished). On your jazz pages, I found a photo of Larry taken in 1961-62 with the Tony Smith Jazzmen. So maybe he kept on playing jazz, after all. Perhaps you have more info on Larry?? Do you know what become of him?? Many thanks in advance for any help you give.". - Michael Perry. (Wolphaartsdyk, Netherlands) - Mart Rodger tells me that sadly Larry Hirst is no longer with us, but do you know what became of him in later years? Did he carry on playing?
04/08/09 - For those of you near the Yorkshire Border, the Boston Spa Jazz Club has just released its latest gig list. You can access this via their web site which you'll find listed on the Links Page

03/08/09 - I am reminded by the ex-Lady Mayoress's husband that today is the birthday of that drummer extraordinaire, Dave Moore. Best Wishes from the Guys at Transpennine Jazz.
03/08/09 - The Jazz Gentlemen will be at The Black Horse, St Helens, this month on the 16th, not the 9th, 8 30 start. It's normally the second Sunday, but it's been changed just for August.
02/08/09 - Many Happy Returns to one of the most active band leaders in the North West, Mike Lovell, who celebrates his birthday tomorrow, August 3rd.
01/08/09 - 4525 visits were made to www.jazznorthwest.co.uk last month. Thanks to you all for making it all worthwhile.
01/08/09 - I've just received an obituary for the late Dickie Hawdon, written by Steve Voce. I've now done a special tribute page for Dickie and compiled all the messages I received along with Steve's words. You can find them by clicking on Dickie Hawdon on the "Remembering" page which you can access via Jazz Extras.
01/08/09 - Mart Rodger Manchester Jazz celebrates its 25th Anniversary on 3rd October. Mart thought it would be a good reason to bring Traditional Jazz back into the City, so the band is giving a performance at The Urbis Centre, Cathedral Gardens, Manchester on the 3rd. The doors will open at 7.00pm and the gig starts at 7.30pm. Advance tickets are £5 available from the Urbis Centre shop or from Mart at P. O. Box 4, Disley, Stockport. SK12 2NH. Cheques payable to M. 31/07/09 - The latest edition of Just Jazz Magazine has just arrived through the letterbox. You can find out what's in it via Jazz Extras
31/07/09 - Many Happy Returns tomorrow, August 1st, to Reg Kenworthy, bass player with Mike Carnie & His Jazz Allstars
31/07/09 - I've suspended the jukebox until Deezer are back on track. Apologies to all those who have been hoping to hear George Lewis. I'm hoping it will be fixed soon.
30/07/09 - Little did I know what I was starting when I announced that Ian Royle was featured on the Home Page playing ,"Here, There and Everywhere". If the discussion expands much further I'll put them together on a discussion page.
30/07/09 - Dear Fred, Several recent heartfelt letters to you speak of what jazz is; was; ought to be and should include. All are prompted by a love of jazz... if not for all its variety of styles! I am grateful to young Jack Daniels (who made his solo debut on trumpet at The Crofters the other week) for sending me this clip of Wynton Marsalis, who explains and beautifully demonstrates what jazz IS. Marsalis has been at the top of the tree since his teens. Appropriately enough, this clip is in Dixieland style. (He sometimes plays ultra-modern jazz, which I freely admit is a little too "tomorrowish" for the likes of me!) He is also possibly the world's finest classical trumpeter.... just for good measure! What a monster musician he is. And what a superb teacher!! Regards, Allan Bentham. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Amwq43-lrM
30/07/09 - "Hello Fred, The "boys" have made me feel great with their comments - I recorded Gilbert (real name Raymond) O'Sullivan's "Alone Again Naturally" (Composed & copyright 1972) on "Allmart" but I still like and play the old stuff. I'm working on "When Erastus Plays His Old Kazoo" and "Grandpa's Spells" at the moment. I hope you had a good holiday - Janet and I have just returned from a driving holiday to Lake Constance in southern Germany.
30/07/09 - One or two people are having problems with the channel 4 Chris Barber Band link. I had to have a few goes myself before I got it to work. If at first you don't succeed, try again later. If all else fail, Tony Lightfoot tells me you can buy it on DVD on Amazon.
30/07/09 - A treat for all you George Lewis fans - Not wanting to be beaten by the fact that Deezer no longer published the code to allow me to display the Jukebox on my site, I have managed to work out how to change the code to show my current play list which consists of a recordings made by George Lewis. It is playing up a little at the moment so not sure how reliable it's going to be, but f you're a Lewis fan, have you ordered the George Lewis DVD yet? Check it out on the main menu.
29/07/09 - I'm indebted to John Westwood for passing this item on from fellow ex-pat, Ted Brown. It's the ultimate in nostalgia, a film that channel 4 have made available called "Momma Don't Allow". It's from the National Film & Television Archive, and made with the support of the British Film Institutes Experimental Production Fund. It was shot at Art & Viv Sanders' Wood Green Jazz Club in the Fishmongers Arms, and features The Chris Barber Jazz Band with Chris Barber, Monty Sunshine, Pat Halcox, Ron Bowden, Lonnie Donegan, Jim Bray & Otillie Paterson. You can see it at http://www.channel4.com/fourdocs/archive/momma_dont_allow_player.html
29/07/09 - Hello Fred, May I just echo Dave Davis's comment that "Bands don't play recently composed songs because they don't like them". What self respecting jazz musician -of any genre would play anything from the current so-called 'Hit Parade'? 'Here, There and Everywhere' was composed and recorded in the 1960's so couldn't exactly be described as a 'modern tune' after all. However, every decade throws up a decent song or two even from 1970 onwards. The Country and Western composers have come up with some splendid jazz vehicles (not the 'dead dogs and divorces' stuff, obviously) and 'Country' has always been allied to Cajun, Zydeco, Blues and - hey - that polyglot music called jazz ! The wonder of jazz is that it can take in 'classical music ('Basin Street Blues'), 'pop' music ('Up a Lazy River'), 'country' (Willie Nelson's 'Crazy'), marches ('Maryland'), blues (too many to mention) and show tunes ('Ain't Misbehavin' - Hot Chocolates). The 32-bar format of many songs is in fact a reduction of classical musics 'sonata form' i. e. a repeated theme, a 'bridge' unrelated to that theme and a return to the main theme. Jazz is where you find it.". - Ian Royle.
29/07/09 - Noel Broadgate writes, "On the question of bands playing tunes other than those written with quill pens on the back of beer mats, I shall always remember a dictum of Dave Donohoe who once said "Jazz is a style, not a repertoire". Go to one of his concerts (or to a Friday evening at Delph and listen to his successors) and you will hear anything from Pleyel's Hymn to Cool Water, or my own personal favourite, Teenage Wedding (C'est la vie). Or listen to any early rock, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash or the Beatles (to name but a few) Amy Winehouse even, and you will note how much of their music is twelve-bar based. So, they use "our" music, why shouldn't we play theirs?". Noel also adds, "Additional Birthday Greetings to Barry Aldous from Noel Broadgate and the Transpennine Jazz guys".
29/07/09 - Many Happy Returns tomorrow, 30th July, to Ken Binns, pianist with the Tony Davis band.
29/07/09 - I just tried to update my jukebox, but the facility to include it on the site appears to have been withdrawn by Deezer. I have contacted them for help, but in the meantime you'll get a second helping of the Firehouse Five Plus Two jazz band.
28/07/09 - "Hello Fred, If you had been talking to Don Long, as you said your goodbyes, he would often say "keep the faith, brother". I must say that my "faith" has waned a little with some of what I've heard over recent years, so some of the most recent correspondence on your site has been very refreshing. Firstly may I congratulate both Ian Royle for having the courage to play a "modern" ballad to a "jazz" audience, and yourself for putting it up on your site. I also felt an affinity with the comments from John Muskett and Moe Green; for myself, I would go a little further than Moe, and add that (although there are many very good jazz musicians and bands knocking about) there are also many who are more "musicologist" than "musician". They've ALL been to New Orleans, were on first name terms with Kid Ory's cousin's boyfriend's granddad, and can tell you who wrote what on a beer mat, who fell off the back of the dray whilst Louis played his 200 top C's, and much, much more (admittedly) very interesting stuff. They quite often tell you this, on the bandstand, whilst a colleague is playing his solo - they really know their stuff! And then they start to play!!!!! Nuff said!!! In fairness, there are just as many modern jazz players, who can play a thousand notes to the bar, but are totally unable to busk a simple straightforward melody, particularly if it's not in the "right" key. There, I've said it again. Hmm. That's a good tune." - Frank Slater
28/07/09 - The 2nd Kelsall Jazz Festival starts at The Morris Dancer, Chester Road, Kelsall, on 7th August, (see Jazz Festivals Page, )and Arthur Pedder has asked me to let people know that there is a Parade starting at 11am on Saturday the 8th, from the Morris Dancer. All umbrellas welcome.
28/07/09 - "Re. John Muskett and Moe Green's letters about bands not playing more recently composed songs. Perhaps the reason is simply that they just don't like them !". - Dave Davis.
28/07/09 - Barry Aldous & Rae Owens both celebrate their birthdays tomorrow. Many Happy Returns chaps.
27/07/09 - "I agree with John Muskett's letter about bands playing more recently composed tunes. After all the jazz stalwarts of today were yesterdays pop songs. However as he says for some musicians there would be nothing to imitate. They would find themselves in deep jazz water without a comforting George Lewis lifebelt and too set in their ways to start swimming." - Moe Green.
26/07/09 - Stan Williams sent me this interesting YouTube link in which Richard Matteson talks about his experience with Louis Armstrong (1960 - Louis & Dukes of Dixieland) and the important lesson that Louis taught him. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNKlmRPPGNs
26/07/09 - Well done for featuring "Here, There and Everywhere" played beautifully by Ian Royle and Peter Franks. I've also got recordings by Martin Taylor with Chet Atkins and Ruby Braff with George Barnes. For years I've wondered aloud why bands don't play tunes by more contemporary composers such as Lennon and McCartney, Burt Bacharach, Billy Joel and Randy Newman. Many jazz groups of yesteryear performed popular music of the day, and Duke Ellington wasn't sniffy about playing Beatles' tunes. Of course it could be that as such music doesn't feature on folks' collections of George Lewis, Ken Colyer and Chris Barber there's nothing to imitate, though I bet Chris HAS played tunes by some (or all) of the above composers". - John Muskett
25/07/09 - Another musician's birthday tomorrow. Many Happy Returns to Charlie Bentley, banjo player with Mart Rodger Manchester Jazz on Sunday 26th July. He shares the same birthday as my sister.
25/07/09 - Frank Robinson, last remaining founder member of the Merseysippi Jazz Band, is to play at Fort Perch Rock tomorrow with the Tony David Band
25/07/09 - I've just updated the gig list for the Richmond Hotel in Southport
24/07/09 - I've just updated the Home Page, so if you missed it go to www.jazznorthwest.co.uk and listen. There's something different about the music, it's not one of your jazz standards. It does feature some beautiful playing on Flugel horn though by Manchester's Ian Royle, so take time to listen and enjoy. I'd like to hear more numbers like this at the jazz clubs, what do you think
24/07/09 - Best wishes to Les Harris of The Blue Magnolia Jass Orchestra who celebrates his birthday tomorrow - 25th July. Their next gig is on Tues 28th July at Mossley Hill British Legion Liverpool L16
24/07/09 - Rochdale Jazz Club gig list has been updated to cover all events for the rest of the year.
24/07/09 - Details of the White Eagles Concert in Bispham in September have been updated to reflect the fact that Dave Lewis replaces Steve Bylinsky on trombone.
23/07/09 - "Hi Fred, I must say a massive thank you for including us in your visit down South and those so kind words about the jazz scene in our neck of the woods. The people you serve through your website I'm sure are grateful for the service you give them all. If any of your readers are likely to be travelling our way in the future they will be made most welcome. Kind regards." - Mick Welstead.
23/07/09 - Dave Copperwaite & Noel Nichols are no longer playing at their weekly residency at The Duke of York, Romiley, however , Dave says, "We are still going at the Arden Arms, Stockport every Monday, with Noel Nicholls and Chris Fry (plus sitters in], with free sandwiches too!".

23/07/09 - Norman Gibson points out an interesting link from Brian Carrick's Algiers Stompers/Heritage Hall Band web site. In Brian's words, "It's a fantastic film from New Orleans in the early days, the introduction is by Dr. Bruce Reaburn of the "Hogan Jazz Archive" in New Orleans". You'll find the link near the bottom of Brian's page.
23/07/09 - An Olds Super trombone with case and mouthpiece, has just gone on for sale or swap on the Sales Page which you can access via the Jazz Extras on the Main Menu.
22/07/09 - Slowly catching up with my backlog, but I've had to find time to write up an account of our jazz weekend break in London & Surrey. If you can find time, check it out, it may give you some ideas for your next jazz break.
22/07/09 - It's time to take off the Chris Barber records from the jukebox, and replace them with a stack of Firehouse Five recordings. I remember hearing them on my first Audio Fidelity Stereophonic Sound Demonstration Record as they came flying down the street with horns and bells blazing. I still have the record.
21/07/09 - Many Happy Returns of the day tomorrow to professional jazz musician, bandleader and follower of the New Orleans tradition - Louis Lince. Louis has played banjo, guitar and bass drum for over 40 years and is currently playing with the Savannah Jazz Band
16/07/09 - I'm afraid there'll be no updates to the site or emails answered after today. Normal service will resume in about a week's time.
16/07/09 - I've just put a new stack of records on The Jukebox, and this week it's the turn of Chris Barber, hopefully I've found some recordings you may not have heard before as well as the golden oldies. With so many to choose from I've made this small selection of recordings part 1, there'll be more later. I hope you enjoy them. You can listen by clicking on "My Jukebox" from the main menu.
15/07/09 - 'Over and Under the Tunnel', a celebration of 75 years of the Tunnel, takes place on Sunday 19th July 2009. Our kind of music will be represented by the Roy Potts' Five and a Penny at the Birkenhead end, to welcome the arrival of visitors from the Liverpool end. Session between 12-00 and 3-00, with the Warrington Silver Band in Kings Square, Birkenhead. Those that attend Roy's session at the Pied Bull in Chester, will note that it will take place from 4-00 to 6-00 this week. Roy tells me, "The Five and a Penny welcome 'Sir' Alan Buckley into the band's drummer's seat. It has been hard find a follow on from Chris, but, 'Sir' Alan is one of the country's top professional drummers, I don't think we could have done much better".
15/07/09 - "Hello Fred, I read Moe Green's comments re lack of interest in the band from university students. In contrast, I had the Mart Rodger Quartet for my grand daughter's eighteenth birthday party and the teenage audience thought they were fantastic". - Barrie Quilliam
15/07/09 - "I was pleased to make the acquaintance of Allan Bentham last Friday, and am grateful for his kind remarks about Café Olé", writes John Muskett. "I agree that Dominic is an exceptionally fine reed player, and it is sad that he is not better known and more widely employed. Unfortunately Allan may have witnessed our final appearance at The Blundell Arms; the (new) landlord does not wish to employ us on a regular monthly basis, although he has said that he will 'phone if and when he DOES want us. Accordingly could you remove us from the Friday (second in the month) spot in What's On? Thanks. I'll let you know if we are engaged there again. Moe Green has highlighted the familiar phenomenon of appreciation of jazz by the very young. I believe that once young children are able to understand and be influenced, they are told by their elder siblings that it is distinctly uncool even to acknowledge the existence of the music, much less display any enthusiasm for it. As Moe says, it may take several decades for them to return to jazz. We also played University Awards Day gigs last week, though we did get some response from the graduates. Possibly a trio is less frightening, and the presence of a sax (John Hallam) and guitar (John Gordon) more amenable to young adults who are accustomed to such instruments in rock/pop settings".
15/07/09 - Tony Davis has passed on a link to a Louis Armstrong video clip from a TV Quiz program on December 27, 1965 when the panel had to guess Louis' secret. His secret centers around the first horn that was given to him then 53 years ago when he was at the Colored Waif's Home in 1912. It's at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70vyNmbqXmQ&feature=related
14/07/09 - Neil Harrison is trying to form a band which plays French style Jazz from the 20's through to 1950's, mainly in the North West and Cumbria, Neil says, "Of course there will be much Django Reinhardt material, but also I have a fine repertoire of Charles Trenet songs, sung in French (bien sur!!) and I believe that this novel enterprise will be interesting and challenging to anyone interested. My instrument is guitar and vocals, I also have a rhythm guitarist (both Selmer guitars) and require a contrabass, drummer and clarinet/trumpet to complete the ensemble. Any takers?".
14/07/09 - Dumfries Jazz Club gig list has been updated.
14/07/09 - Tom Jones who recently retired from The WALL CITY JAZZMEN is selling his trumpet, full details on the Sales Page via Jazz Extras
14/07/09 - Mike Lovell (tbn) has secured another season on Blackpool's North Pier for his Six-In-A-Bar Band with vocalist Rosie Harrison, Pete Eddowes (dms), Temperance Seven reed man Willie Entwistle, and Harmony Hounds duo Colin Turner (tuba) and Chris Howes (bjo/gtr). If you're in the Blackpool area on Saturdays, take a free trip on the North pier to the Sun Terrace at the end, and relax in a deck chair from 1pm listening to some good jazz.
13/07/09 - Stewart Scott has a bass drum red metallic finish in good condition-£10-00 to a good home, You can call Stewart in Worsley on 0161-790-7297.
12/07/09 - "Hi Fred I'm so pleased John Muskett has pointed us to a few gems that I can now go straight to! It is easy to find oneself spending ages on the PC as there is just so much! " - Norman Gibson
12/07/09 - "Hi Fred, we have just finished our annual 5 day gig for the Awards Ceremony at a large University. We played in the refreshment marquee twice a day to an average of about 2000 people per day. The response of the audience was interesting. The students showed about as much interest in us as in a shower of rain ( this is not a comment on our band ) ! Admittedly they had just graduated and probably weren't bothered about a group of pensioners playing some sort of music that had three different music lines playing at the same time, but the young children were something else. They were grooving away to the music like good 'uns. It's a shame that that is probably the only time they will hear jazz. Another generation lost to us. Although by the time they come of age us lot will be jamming with Gabriel !". - Moe Green ( OFLB )
12/07/09 - From Allan Bentham - "Dear Fred, Having read (on What's On) that an outfit called Cafe Ole was appearing on Friday last, Susie and I drove to one of our favourite pub/restaurants The Blundell Arms, near Horwich, to be well-fed and hugely entertained by a trio comprising string bass, guitar and tenor. I had last seen the guitarist, John Gordon, playing with Barry Aldous and Doug Whaley in The Cotton City. The fine bass-player turned out to be John Musket, whom I was delighted to meet...having read him so often on your pages! I was knocked-out by the tenor/clari man, Dominic Groves, who hails from Yorkshire. His style is slightly pre-Parker, and reminded me of Scott Hamilton in many ways. He provided a stream of perfectly executed fresh melodic ideas on a host of jazz standards. Great stuff! That's another one I owe you, Fred!
12/07/09 - Martin Bennett needs a case for a 28 inch bass drum. "A hard case would be ideal", says Martin, "The bass drum I have restored had its first outing today with The Eclipse Parade Band and sounded fine"

12/07/09 - Many Happy Returns of the day today to Cyril Wroe. For many years Cyril was leader of the Festival Jazzmen, and is still playing today, but mainly with smaller bands.
10/07/09 - "Hello Fred, Glad that Norman Gibson has discovered the Red Hot site. I've been visiting it for several years, which possibly is how long it will take Norman to get around most of it. Apart from having all the Morton/Oliver/Armstrong tracks, there is a wealth of recordings by the "Hot Dance Bands" of the twenties. In my opinion these were only inferior to the jazz groups in their lack of soloists of the calibre of Armstrong, Beiderbecke, Simeon, Noone, Dodds, Morton, Hines and others. They all had splendid trumpeters. Many interesting singers such as Annette Hanshaw, Marion Harris, Cliff Edwards ("Ukulele Ike") and Nick Lucas (also a fine guitarist) can be found on the site and there are plenty of recordings from the thirties, so that Fats Waller, Duke Ellington, Django Reinhardt, Benny Goodman, Billie Holiday, Teddy Wilson and Jack Teagarden are represented. Not much, alas, of Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young or Artie Shaw. I suspect that a number of present-day musicians, trying to play along with these old tracks, would be surprised by the keys (by no means limited to F, Bb and Eb), the chords and the arrangements as played by the composers or original recorders. Plenty of Clarence Williams and W. C. Handy (whose "lost" second theme of Ole Miss and Yellow Dog Blues In D, F, Bb and Eb can be heard). The site is a collectors' cornucopia, and may be augmented by www. jazz-on-line. com and www. spotify. com, though the former does not have much after 1950. Does anyone know of comparable sites for Blues (especially the old stuff - Blind Lemon Jefferson et al), Swing, and (dare I say it?) Bebop and "West Coast" jazz? Best wishes" - John Muskett
10/07/09 - Back to Back - Acker Bilk and The Paramount Jazz Band, and Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen, are appearing at The Bridgewater Hall in Manchester on Friday 25th September at 7-30pm. Also for big band enthusiasts, Chris Dean's Syd Lawrence Orchestra are at the same venue on 14th October. www.bridgewater-hall.co.uk for further information.
10/07/09 - Mike Taylor from Blackpool, (piano) is the latest musician to go on the Deps List
08/07/09 - Sammy Rimington is coming to the North West again in the Autumn. I know that he's appearing at Hyde Cricket & Squash Club on 25th November, but that's the only firm date I've got so far, unless you know different. He's also due to appear at Delph Band Club, but the date is not yet available. That's an all ticket affair, and usually a sellout, so watch this space.
08/07/09 - Pleased to report that my friend, fellow pianist and erstwhile schoolmate, Derek Harrison is slowly recovering from a mystery virus. May I, via your web site, send him Best Wishes for a speedy recovery. - Noel Broadgate
08/07/09 - I emailed my musician mailing lost recently to say that Smith Butterfield, from Keighley, was after a double bass. I'm pleased to say it produced results and he's now fixed up.
07/07/09 - The River City Jazzmen will be playing on Llandudno pier for their summer season on the following dates, Sunday 12th July, Sunday 19th July, and then every Saturday and Sunday from 25th July to 30th August from 1-5pm. "We hope to see our many friends again this year. Great music played on one of North Wales most spectacular locations", writes Charles Wilson.
07/07/09 - I was pleased to have a chat with leader of The New Riverside Jazz Band (Alan Duckles) this afternoon, after he had returned from having treatment on his arm at Christie's Hospital in Manchester following the removal of a lump. There had been talk of removing muscle and having skin grafts, which could have affected his ability to hold his cornet, but thankfully neither was needed, and the scar is barely noticeable. Alan was delighted at the outcome and can't speak highly enough of the staff and the superb treatment he received at Christie's hospital. Needless to say I asked permission before relaying this information.
07/07/09 - Norman Gibson writes , "Nobody has ever mentioned a superb US website I have found and it is packed full of great stuff. It will take me months (if ever!) to really exhaust everything in it! (sounds like this site Norman - Fred) .I must now go out and buy myself a really better sound system to plug to my laptop!! The site is THE RED HOT JAZZ ARCHIVE - A History of Jazz before 1930. Call it up on www.redhotjazz.com". It's not quite true to say that, because it has been mentioned on the site before and it's been on my links page for years, but on the basis that there's 388 links to go at, and I've been looking at my site longer than anyone else, and new people are coming along all the time, it's well worth another mention. As Norman says, "For example, take Louis Armstrong Bands - There are 42 tracks of The Hot Five alone! Includes 'Heebie Jeebies' 1925 - one of the earliest with scat singing. Must be 100's for Armstrong bands and orchestras alone! Looking at the list of bands from 1895 to 1930 is staggering, and then going to the tracks available for each of those bands it must run into thousands!!!
05/07/09 - Many Happy Returns of The Day to Tony Dunleavy, trombone player with the Chicago Teddybears Society Jazz Band

05/07/08
- A record
crowd turned up for The Savannah Jazz
Band at The Crofters last night to witness what was almost a
disaster! In an effort to get more chairs off the stage
for the 106 strong audience, Tony Pollitt's double bass got
knocked over, the bridge got flattened and the sound post came
adrift. It was inconceivable that it could be fixed, so much so
that John Meehan put out an appeal for the names of any bass
players in the locality, and Rod Chambers contacted bass player
Peter Vickers from Preston. Peter, who was in the middle of
making his tea, dropped everything and set off for Garstang,
however, nobody had reckoned on the skills of bass player, and
fellow radio ham, Peter Fielding. Peter was in the audience
(minus bass), and he tackled the job of repairing it. With
a handful of people shaking the instrument around, they managed
to recover the sound post from inside the double bass. That was
the easy bit. Replacing the sound post was a work of art, as the
bridge and sound post are simply held in place under tension of
the strings. Normally requiring the use of a "sound post
setter", Peter managed, with the aid of some 'Gaffa tape'
and the skill of a surgeon, to get the sound post and bridge
restored to their respective positions, minutes before Peter
Vickers arrived. A huge cheer greeted them both. The
biggest cheer of the night though went to promoter Derek
Daniel's son - 13 year old Jack, who entertained the crowd
during the interval with a couple of trumpet solo numbers
that would have done justice to someone twice his age - a future
jazz musician in the making? John Meehan has asked me to
convey his thanks to both Peter's for helping them out at such
short notice. I guess the moral of this story is to beware of
chairs and to carry a copy of this site's Deps
List at all times. Thanks to Bill Jackson for the picture of
Jack, my batteries had died on me.
05/07/09 - John Tucker (tpt) and Louis Lince (bjo) are guesting with Mike Lovell's 6-in-a-bar at The Richmond in Southport on Wednesday evening.
04/07/09 - John Westwood passed on this boogie woogie video clip, stand by to be amazed. Stop the ragtime piano first if it's playing. If you are reading this news via email, then please go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJhnZt7GoYA&feature=email
04/07/09 - The Carlisle Jazz Club gig list has been updated.
04/07/09 - Back in 2004, Royce Emerson was trying to locate some of his old musician colleagues he played with prior to 1974. The band, The Shanty Town 5, played around Peterborough. He was trying contact 'Ned' Robinson (banjo), Trevor Robson (clarinet), and Doug Dyer (trombone.). I've now got contact details for Doug, but unfortunately I don't have Royce Emerson's email address any longer. Perhaps if he still checks the site he might get back to me, or if you know Royce, you could mention it to him.
03/07/09 - I'm forever grateful to Tony Lightfoot, who has lent me the DVD "Ring-A-Ding-Rhythm" which he recently purchased from America. The other better known title of this black and white 1962 film is "It's Trad Dad", and it an amazing piece of classic British Trad memorabilia. It features Terry Lightfoot and his Jazzmen with Roy Williams on trombone, and the late Dickie Hawdon on trumpet. Other bands featured are Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen, The Temperance Seven, Bob Wallis and his Storyville Jazzmen, Acker Bilk and his Paramount Jazz Band, Dukes of Dixieland and Chris Barber and his Jazz Band with Ottilie Patterson. Craig Douglas and Helen Shapiro are two teenagers who, along with their friends enjoy the latest trend of traditional jazz. However, the mayor as well as a group of adults dislike the trend and move to have a coffee shop jukebox taken away. It's a rubbish storyline, but it also features some of the pop idols of the late 50's early 60's, as well as DJs Pete Murray, Alan Freeman and David Jacobs. I might try and bulk buy and sell through the site if possible and if there's enough interest.
03/07/09 - I was

02/07/09 - Following on from my comments of 27/04/09 that I had requested Pleyel's Hymn when listening to Dave Donohoe, Noel Broadgate writes, "Yes, Fred, I too found Pleyel's Hymn haunting, and fascinating in it's simplicity, though I first heard it either at Delph, or on a Sammy Rimington CD. It was written in 1791 by Brother Joseph Ignatius Pleyel, a member of the Budapest Lodge. Words were added by David Vinton, also a Mason, and in 1816 it was published in Dedham Massachusetts under the title of "The Masonic Minstrel". It was adopted by several Lodges, and was referred to, rather uncomplimentary in my opinion, as "The Masonic Dirge". I dug out some music, and wrote an arrangement for Terry Brunt's Dead Good Tame Valley Stompers. We tried it out at The Turnpike in Ashton, our Monday residency, and then decided to include it in the band's pad, subsequently playing it at venues in Leeds, Rotherham, and Southport among others. An unusual tune, not in every band's repertoire".
02/07/09 - "Hi Fred One can only endorse the comments made recently by fine trumpet player Derek Winters about the welcome on the southwest jazz scene. It is very true about the warmth of reception by southwest organisers, audiences and musicians alike. Several musicians have re-located from the northwest and happily settled into an enjoyable jazz scene here exceedingly well. The 51 Club organisers do a superb job for jazz in the far west of Cornwall and welcome jazz fans and musicians from near and afar. The venue also does a great Sunday Roast! Certainly for any 'jazzers' visiting Cornwall, it is 'must do' venue for a Sunday lunchtime. Ex-Northerners trumpet/pianist Phil Morris and drummer Alan Davies got together to form a new southwest band, 'The Peninsula Jazzband' which will be making its third appearance at the Smugglers Inn this coming Sunday, including fine musicians and fellow northerners, Mike Pearson on trombone & Mike Lunn on banjo". - Alan Davies
02/07/09 - The Mart Rodger Manchester Jazz Band has been booked again for the transatlantic cruise from The Caribbean to Majorca 11th April 2010. Unfortunately I'm not yet geared up to sell you tickets!
02/07/09 - "Fred, Just a note to say thanks for the news updates, I find them interesting even though I'm originally from Teeside. I played trombone for many years in Stockton with Peter Wright - Brian Carrick et al - And yes I know Derek Winters very well and have every intention to visit him this year. I have been in North Essex for over 20 years - and still have a successful jazz career fronting a five piece band around the Colchester - Harwich district. I may not be from the Northwest (next best place to Yorkshire) however, thanks once again for the time and effort you put into an excellent news letter". - Peter Jezard
02/07/09 - "Hi Fred. I had the pleasure of meeting up with Dickie Hawdon in Glasgow during his Terry Lightfoot days. Apart from his superb musicianship, stretching from traditional to modern to big band with John Dankworth, he was also a mad keen golfer and always brought his clubs on tour. On one occasion, after an extremely late night party finishing around 5, we arranged a game for 9am. He went round in two over par - for each hole! He was also head of light music from 1974 till 1993 at Leeds College of Music, a fertile source for many of today's up and coming younger musicians. Quite a set of achievements for a great guy". - Ian Boyes
02/07/09 - "When I was teenager I saw the Yorkshire Jazz Band with Dickie playing trumpet, Alan Cooper Clarinet, Ed O' Donnel Trombone, Bob Barclay playing Tuba (he did the clarinet chorus from High Society on tuba), Diz Dizley Banjo & Guitar, Norman Doddsworth playing drums and Johnny Parker pianist. They played at the Houldsworth Hall on Deansgate and I recall it was an excellent evening". - Mart Rodger
01/07/09 - Les Bull writes, "We have decided to stop playing our monthly gig at The Bull in Sedbergh, and we are looking for something monthly to replace it. Anywhere within about 30/40 mile radius of Lancaster/Kendal. Anyone got any suggestions? (no rude ones please - we already get plenty of those!) For the record, we still do a monthly residency at Burgundy's Wine Bar, Kendal (now switched to second Thursdays, the next date being Thursday July 9th) and also at The Byres in Bentham (a fairly flexible feast, the next one being Thursday July 23rd)."
01/07/09 - More from Derek Winters - "Thanks Fred and just a little more about our Club. Called the 51 Jazz Club of Cornwall (I understand originally named after the home of Ken Colyer's Club, Studio 51 Great Newpoert Street Soho) operates every Sunday lunch-time at The Smugglers Inn St Erth Praze, about 4 miles from Penzance and St Ives. The pub itself has had Jazz there for 38 years! We book both local and travelling bands and also bands on tour from overseas. This week-end its the Golawan Festival with many streets closed and cafes and pubs spilling onto the streets. Tonight, my band "Winter Sunshine" with Ian Wheeler and Gabriel Gadd from London plus some local guys will play in the town centre and then tomorrow at The Smugglers. Although your readers will miss this please tell them every week they will be made most welcome and will hear good old traditional Jazz "
01/07/09 - The latest Hot Jazz Channel internet radio show is now "live" at www.radiojazz. co. uk see latest details
01/07/09 - I've just spent three days sorting out the music on the site. Over the last 15 years, since this site started, I've been depositing music over varies internet provider's web space to keep the costs down. You wouldn't have been aware that the music was coming from a different location to the web page you clicked on to hear it, but I've now got it all on one site, and I've compiled a list. You can see and listen to all 25 recordings at http://sites.google.com/site/jazztraditional/
01/07/09 - It's time to put a fresh stack of records on The Jukebox. This week it's the turn of the man with the bowler hat - Acker Bilk. Enjoy!
