10/10/06 - Hi Fred,
I'm looking for a copy of the song "Honey in the Horn" as recorded by the Squadronaires. So far I have been unable to locate anyone who has any information about this piece, but I assume it was recorded in the early
1950s. Could you post a query on your Sales & Wants pages with my name and email address?
Thanks very much,
John Michael

24/09/06 - Dear Fred,
I am looking for a tenor sax that can be my second instrument, that I can
leave at school overnight, so I can practice at break times and not worry
overly about the school being burgled. At the moment I have to lug my tenor up
and down the Victoria line which is a pain. Appearance therefore is
immaterial, however if it played reasonably that would be good. Thanks!

Fred McCormick, who has been trying to find out the history
of the Varsity Record label, says, "I was browsing a secondhand bookshop yesterday and picked up a New Grove Dictionary of Jazz (probably the biggest and best and most authoritative reference work on jazz that there is), for the most unprincely price of just nine quid.
The entry says that the label was the progeny of the United States Record Corporation. Also, that it was founded by Eli Oberstein in 1939, as a bargain reissue label, to remarket stuff from other labels such as Paramount, Gennett and Crown. The entry is pretty brief, which doubtless reflects the fact that the label wasn't around for very long.
However, my acquisition of the New Grove has thrown up another query. It has a handwritten signature inside, which indicates that the book was once the property of Jack (possibly Dick) Burrell. I'm afraid the name draws a blank with me, but this particular bookshop has been selling a lot of jazz literature lately, and I suspect that it has all come from the same source. I wonder if you or anyone else would know who this gentleman was.
It is possible that he may have lived in the Allerton area of Liverpool. There was a bookmarker inside advertising Allerton Public Libraries.
Royce Emerson is trying to locate some of his old musician colleagues he played with prior to 1974. The band, The Shanty Town 5, played around Peterborough and Roy played bass. He would like to contact 'Ned' Robinson (banjo), Trevor Robson (clarinet), and Doug Dyer (trombone.). If you can help, please email me - fred.burnett@btinternet.com
I am on the search again for recordings - tapes, LP's or CD's by George Penman Jazzmen. I believe George may still be operating in the Glasgow area. If anyone can help I would be grateful - either buy or loan would do. Also any recordings by Jim McHarg Jazz Band. A few have appeared on compilations, but did he make any of his own? Thanks again - Stuart McLean (from Ayrshire) If you can help, email fred.burnett@btinternet.com

20/02/04 - Is there a rusty old clarinet and banjo player out there in the North Cumbria/Carlisle area, who wants to join an equally rusty New Orleans band for weekly sessions? Must be experienced and have played NO with a band in the (distant?) past, know the tunes, and love the music. Other NO musicians in area should also make contact, to Brian Park on 016974-73566. (previous number incorrect)
12/02/04 - Eddie Doyle has written to say, "I am the grandson of Ted Calvert. Unfortunately he died 2 days after I was born so I never got to meet him. If you can help, please contact me and I'll pass it on. fred.burnett@btinternet.com
11/02/04 - "I have been searching for a copy of the Jazz Greats Series Magazine & CD No 66 Stan Kenton. I have tried all the normal channels but back issues are not available. It is for a musician friend in Australia. Hope you are keeping well and keep up the good work". bugleboy * supanet.com
02/02/04 - After searching in vain for years, I finally came across of what i was looking for in the Web , on Google ( bless it) !: Louis Armstrong Memorial Concert (1971) issued on BLACK LION. As a former Jazz producer. at the Swiss Radio in Lausanne, I used to play the LP (W12-W341155-E) on the air. A cd of the concert existed on Black Lion in their series " Britain's JAZZ Heritage", but apparently is not available any more (?) So, if a good soul could do something and find me one or the other, I would be a happy jazz-freak !! - Bruno durring * bluewin.ch

24/08/03 - The Mathew St. Ragtime Jazzband is seeking a trumpet player to play on alternate Wednesdays at the Marlborough pub in Liverpool city centre OR ,------- two separate trumpet players to play one week in every four. We have operated for the past couple of years with 2 trumpeters playing week and week about , but unfortunately, Mike Hardacre can no longer continue to play with us on a regular basis due to his increasing commitments with the Salt City Jazzmen and his day job responsibilities. We would like to thank Mike for his help over the past 2
years, especially in travelling all the way from Chester to play late into the night!
Despite our name we do not play very many ragtime tunes! We can cross over from New Orleans to Dixieland styles depending on who is playing the
lenonad.
Our venue is now in its 15th year, which we think is a record for Merseyside jazz. The pub is small but has a regular group of band followers and a lot of passing trade. No two weeks are ever the
same. Car parking is on the street but very safe due to the large number of security staff on duty outside the neighbouring establishments.
The advantage for anyone travelling any distance is the relatively late start---9.30pm. The downside, of course is the correspondingly late finish---midnight.
Anyone interested is very welcome to come and dep for one night, or just sit in, without any obligation.
Please call either Cliff Barker on 0151-639-9212, or Phil Yates on 0151-920-5813 or email

20/08/03 - "I had the good fortune to live near Manchester in the mid to late 50s. Many happy hours were spent with the Zenith 6, Batty's Jazz Aces, the Southside Stompers and the great bands that used to play at the Bodega. Would love to hear from anybody with private tapes of those bands, I have the commercially available material. Will trade tapes, or would kill to hear John Barnes with the Zenith. I have a good collection and would like to hear from anybody interested".- Glen Page gpage*dccnet.com (replace * with @ )
21/01/03 - In 1956 I bought a 45 r. p. m. record of Louis Armstrong with his All Stars called 'Louis Armstrong at the Crescendo Vol 1 Part 4'. The two numbers on it are Blues for Bass and Don't Fence Me In', vocals by Louis and Velma Middleton. Down the years it has been played frequently and is now worse for wear with a lot of surface noise. Would you be kind enough to put this in your newsletter in the hope that someone may know whether these numbers have been put on a CD. I have surfed the Net and found a web site dedicated to Louis Armstrong, and been in contact with Jazz Jerry but so far no luck. Thanks
Regards Mildred Finney
