“All art aspires to the condition
of music.“ ...

Compiled and edited by Jean M.Haig-Whiteley. ATM (SMTC)
(contributor to the New Dictionary of National Biography)

As a retired violinist and teacher, I have carefully compiled this
425,000 word dictionary over 15 years; it consists of over 900
biographies of violinists with teachers and pupils cross-referenced.
also a chart showing master and pupil relationships, a list of key
figures and influences, a history of violin playing and compositions
from pre-Corelli to the present day, short entries on violin makers, and

the origin and ancestry of the violin with illustrations.

The complete work (with number of words in brackets)
is as follows:-
(579) Introduction
(2886) Origin and ancestry of the violin (with illustrations)
(2854) History of violin playing and compositions
(259) List of key figures and influences (+ Chart)
Biographical entries of 900 + names (number of words
shown with each name)
(3467) Violin Makers, Italian and others.
(1153) Bibliography

(first issued September 1999) Up-dated January 2001; plus new entry
- Rachin, Julian. Isaac Stern up-dated October 2001;
Dorothy DeLay up-dated March 2002. Wolfgang Schneiderhan up-dated
May 2002. New entry, Pekka Kuusisto, June 2002.

Errors and Omissions. I have made many corrections from errors In
various sources (including New Grove 1980), but have doubtless made
a few of my own, We do not have access to all language fonts,
therefore some names will appear without their customary accents.

Several of today’s younger violinists have been omitted, but any
amendments, updating and information from readers would be
gratefully received at my e-mail address.
