My father's mother was a Ventress. This was a Quaker family from Bilsdale in North Yorkshire. The earliest Ventress I have traced so far is Thomas, born 1720 in Pockley married Mary Baker a Quaker Minister in 1747, in Thirsk. The Baker's were from Helmsley. Another related Bilsdale Quaker family is Coning.
Thomas's grandson James, born in 1793, a tailor, moved to Leeds about 1823 and married Mary Wickett, a Quaker from Darlington in Bradford in 1828. They eventually settled in Gildersome in Morley, where there still is a Quaker meeting house.
