Edward Harmston THOMPSON was born on 10 August 1883 at Easthorpe, Mirfield, Yorkshire, the son of Frederick Henry and Elizabeth Rose (née HARMSTON) THOMPSON.
On 30 July 1910, Edward Harmston THOMPSON, a bachelor aged 27, married Bessie TAYLOR, a 26 year old spinster, the daughter of Peter Foster TAYLOR and Margaret (née TYRIE) at the parish church of St Thomas, Pendleton, Salford, Lancashire. They were described as salesman and saleswoman. Around this time, Edward Harmston was photographed standing in the doorway of the Lancashire Tool Store so it could be here that the couple worked together. How Edward came to be working in Lancashire is yet unknown. One line of speculation involves cousin, Charles HARMSTON of Canwick, an ironmonger in Lincoln City.
Their only child, my mother, Margaret Rose THOMPSON, was born on Wednesday, 12 July 1911 at 19 Kersal View, Pendleton. At the time of her birth, Edward Harmston was described as an ironmonger's salesman. By 1918, six year old Margaret Rose and her parents had moved to 88 Blundell Avenue, New Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire not far from the Grimsby Football Ground.
