Downend Local History Society

About the Society

The Society exists to promote an interest in local history and in particular that of Downend, Mangotsfield, Staple Hill and the newer areas such as Emerson's Green. These areas were originally all in the ancient parish of Mangotsfield, Gloucestershire.

Downend Local History Society is a Society of the Downend Folk House Association. Between October and Easter it holds meetings at Lincombe Barn, Overndale Road, Downend, on the first, third and fifth Tuesdays of the month, starting at 7.30 pm. Current membership of DFHA is £10 a year, and  that of DLHS, a further £18.

Those who enrol each autumn enjoy a programme of talks (usually totalling 12) by visiting speakers and Society members and have access to an excellent local history library of nearly 700 books.  In the summer, organised walks and visits to places of historic or archaeological interest are arranged.

As well as arranging talks, summer visits, and exhibitions, the society maintains a large collection of around 2000 historic photographs. From time to time it also publishes book and monographs.

Currently the membership stands at almost 200

Visitors are welcome to attend winter meetings at a cost of £2 per meeting

The Society is affiliated to the Avon Local History Association.
