With the warmer weather, activity in the pond has increased. A sample from the surface, including a few bits of pond-weed, rewarded me with a host of activity. There were several types of mobile green algae, at least one with a visible flagella (or did it have two?). The big surprise was the large number of diatoms attached to the pond-weed stem. As usual, I examined these in a petri-dish on top of a plain slide under the x4, x10 and x40 objectives.
Here's one of the more common ones found, possibly Synedra. It's length is about 100 microns (a tenth of a millimetre) and those striations are about 0.85 microns apart.

There were also some fan-shaped clusters of Meridion, I think. (I'm being cautious about these identifications because there seem to be so many species.) Each segment of the fan is about 40 microns long. Here's a small cluster:
