A football match between two local, rival cable companies took place on Saturday July 29th in aid of Tom's fund. The men from Pirelli Cables, a well-established cable company based at Wendsbury Street, Newport took on the might of the ladies from Cogent Defence Systems, at Queensway Meadows Industrial Estate, also in Newport. Kick off was at 11:15am sharp and a tightly fought match ensued over the next hour. At half time the Men coached by Mr. Ron Cook were up by 6 goals to one. A truly spirited second half by the ladies coached by Mr. Frank Huwish and Mr. Simon Dudley meant that by the final whistle they had drawn level at a score of 6 all. The Men's team was sponsored £300.00 by Pirelli Cables. The Ladies team was sponsored £300.00 by Cogent Defence Systems. A huge thank you goes to both for their generosity. A raffle later took place in the clubhouse of the Leisure Centre at Spytty Park, where £44.00 was raised towards the fund. Mr. Ron Cook presented a total of £344.00 on the day to Alison Phillips, the Tom Trewick Fund representative. Sales of a book of poetry, titled ' Floating Freely: on land cloud or sea' written by CEJ Dudley, both prior to and at the football match raised another £119 which was kindly donated to the fund by the author. The total amount raised for this event was £763.00 Thank you to all those who came to support the teams, and special thanks to the players and coaches for taking the time to help us out for a very worthwhile cause. And of course a big thank you to both Pirelli Cable and Cogent Defence Systems for sponsoring their respective teams. |
