UK 77 - Self Titled
1. Life on Hold
2. Freeloader
3. 20 Minutes Dead
4. Wonderland
The name UK 77 gives me a lot of preconceptions about this band, preconceptions
which thankfully turn out to be wrong. I thought I was going to be in for 4
tracks of middle-aged blokes playing sloppy, unmemorable, shouty old-school punk
rock and wallowing in their self-righteous "punkness". UK 77 actually play music
which seems to owe more to bands like Operation Ivy and Green Day than The Sex
Pistols or The Exploited and actually has no pretension at all.
It's a good mix of bouncy ska and mid-tempo punk rock with catchy choruses
aplenty. The production isn't amazing, but you get a good idea of what UK 77 are
all about from this CD, and it seems to be simplicity and fun. The vocals are a
little Snuff-like with hints of Rancid in there, and the music is...well...punk
rock and ska, if you know what that sounds like then you'll know what to expect
because this band don't add much technicality or variation to the style.
I don't think they're about to take the world by storm but it's
not bad music by any means.
