4. The Grey Room
I've heard a lot of bands that sound like Page 44, it's moderate-paced indie-rock;
nothing too loud but it has its breakout moments of euphoric chorus. The
question is: do they have what it takes to stand out from the crowd with their
music? To do so they would need really well written songs and some amazing hooks
to stick in your head. While on the whole it all sounds decidedly average, there
are some glimmers of interest in this CD that catch my ear enough to listen more
closely than I would if it were totally bland. These glimmers of interest are a
skilled bassist with interesting lines that prick my ears up, especially during
the quieter sections of Walking Wounded, sweet but not overproduced vocal
harmonies in most of the tracks and the chorus of We Know the Way is catchy,
poppy and well structured and will probably be my most lasting memory of Page 44
and the representation of how I will think of them in the future.
