Clay Pigeon - Demo 2007
(7 tracks, tracklisting not supplied)
These guys from London wear their influences on their sleeve, with clear nods to
bands like Sublime, Sonic Boom Six and King Prawn with their reggae/ska/punk
mix. They've not just shoved a few styles together and hoped for the best
though, there's been a clear thought process gone into this that's made their
own original style of fast-firing, multitextured ragga punk, and I can really
appreciate it. Their guitar licks show a lot of imagination and steer clear of
any cliches, but the real standout feature is the vocals, although they're not
terribly well mixed, and despite the occasional slip into a questionable
caribbean accent, the speed rapping thing (or whatever you want to call it) is
pulled off remarkably well and they fit a huge amount of words into a small
amount of time, but keeping the rhythm and keeping an interesting melody, even
finding time to shove in bits of harmony. The two vocalists work together
particularly well, as they both have a different singing tone, giving the tracks
real variety.
And that is what ClayPigeon offer, variety - something a bit different, and lots
of it too, even a load of quality beatboxing, something which always gets a
thumbs up from me. A very enjoyable and original listen.
