Puck - Beyond Reason

1. All That You Are
2. Masquerade
3. Michael
4. No Shame
5. Change Me
6. Shelters
7. No Tonight

One of my guilty pleasures is that really cheesy pop-rock from the likes of Avril Lavigne, Kelly Clarkson, Paramore and stuff like that. Puck aren't far from this commercial style, although perhaps they are closer to someone like Evanescence, in that they appear to take themselves quite seriously through their lyrical content. All their songs have pretty negative themes which get you down a bit without a shred of optimism, not something I'd be looking for if I wanted to listen to this kind of thing.

Vocalist AmyJay has a damn strong voice that lifts these songs into powerballad territory, although on the slower songs she has an unnerving reminiscence of Britney Spears.

As a band, Puck have definitely got their act together and have got a powerballad-metal style all of their own, but as a CD, the songs are too samey and too depressing for me to want to rewind and have another listen.
