Fascinating website especially for an ex pat. I lived in Harrington from 1965 to 72. Went to the Catholic school but enjoyed many services in your church as I was a cub scout in the 11th Workinton. I lived on the corner of Burnside and Church Road opposite the George & Draggon. I could ramble on for ever, if anyone wishes to contact me. My father peter is still involved with the scouts and my son Damian has been selected to represent South Yorkshire at the world Scout Jamboree in Thailand next year.

Went to the school next to the Geore & Dragon then to the one on top of the hill. Walked to school, walked along the shore, walked over the fields as far as ellerbeck hospital,Poorhouse, Scaw road.Learned to play table tennis, billiards and chess at the YMCA.Was in the st,Marys cubs football team. My lasting memory of our church was on dark December nights looking from my bedroom window on Holden Road and seeing the illuminated cross.

Hello.Thank you very much for providing the first helpful information on Harrington. I have been trying for years to find out if you had an R.C. Church in the district. I visited Whitehaven nearly 20 yrs ago but succeeded only in sighting the Registers of St. Beghs. My ancestor Sarah Margaret Wise of Harrington b.1811 married (?) the rather younger,CAPTAIN GEORGE FITZSIMONS (b.1825 KILMEGAN, near Newcastle, Belfast)He was a Master Mariner sailing several smaller sailing ships from out of Whitehaven (registered in Lloyd's)in the 1840's. He received his Master's Certificate at LIVERPOOL in 1854. He died at sea but I have no details of his last ship:the SIR ROBERT CAMPBELL. But he was the mate on the better known: PRINCESS ROYAL. I do not know if/where they married but thanks to your lovely, helpful website, I

The "chimney" photo you display was dropped by my grandfather, John Eadie. My father, also John Eadie, lived in Harrington and, I believe, attended St. Mary's Anglican Church. My grandmother was Mary Eadie. I am trying to do some genealogic tracing and would appreciate any information that you could provide on our family. Love your website and will show it to my father at the earliest opportunity.

I grew up in Harrington, living there (Archer Street) from 1968 until 1990. I learned much of its history from my Grandfather, a 'Harrington lad' (Thomas ('Tommy') Armstrong, 1908-1993). I've always been interested in local history, & in Harrington & Workington (& the Curwens) in particular.

Found yourarticles interesting. Spent most of my infancy and youth in Harrington. I attended infant and junior schools. Was in the Church choir, the boy scouts. I dispute the date of the dropping of the iron works chimney. I was born in 1929 and I was taken up Copperas Hill to watch it fall.I would suggest nearer 1937.

I ran across the Stablers'posts to this board from last year. I was very interested to see that their relation had at one time lived at Fox Pit house. I have been looking for my English ancestors, the Simpsons, for some time now, and I have finally located them living in Harrington in the 1800's, probably from the early 1820's through at least 1856. The 1841 and 1851 Census listings show that they lived in Fox Pit House and that a number of them were born there. I'm not sure if they were in that house prior to 1841, but it is quite possible. I notice that the Internet lists the following: Toms Tool Chest Fox Pit House Copperas Hill Harrington Cumbria CA14 5RX http://www.ttcuk.com/3.html I wonder if this business is the current tenant of the Fox Pit House. I am extremely interes

My Great Grandfather, Eli Smith and Great Grandmother, Annie Smith (nee Dalton) are buried in your church yard. Last June my mother, Eileen Chamberlain (nee Smith) and I came to visit but the church was closed. We were trying to find where they were buried. Eli Smith ran a market garden across the street, the property is still there but overgrown now. We wanted to find out who owns the property and get any other information on possible relatives still living there. My mother now lives in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. She's 80 years old in September - I live in Toronto. Do you have any information that would help our search? Kind regards.

Thank you for The wonderful Cinderella script. I have been able to use it for our school Pantomime. Ysgol y Grango is a small High Scholl and the drama club is part of the extra-curricular Activities that we have just started. We didi Aladddin last year and the cost was exceptional with oerforming rights etc. It is refrehing to have a script that is easy to adapt and that shows sparkle and vitality. Thank you once again.
