Garden Design Holidays - The Area
Calella de Palafrugell

This is the larger of the two villages selected and was originally a fishing village - today fishermen still pull their boats up onto the main beach. Fishermen used to sit under the arches along the seafront to repair their nets- these now house bars and restaurants. There are several small beaches, a handful of shops and plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from.

Calella is a mecca for artists and in the summer months, concerts are held in the Cap Roig gardens on the outskirts of Callela and the habaneres is held on the main beach – this is a concert of traditional folk songs. The walks here are gentle – it is possible to walk along the cliff top to El Golfet, a small beach, in one direction and to Llafranc, the next small village, in the other. The views along these coastline walks are stunning. Llafranc is more stylish with its smart promenade and marina. It has a lovely horseshoe shaped bay and a good selection of bars and restaurants along the seafront.

Tamariu

Tamariu is a small, secluded cove surrounded by pine-clad hills. Originally a fishing village, it has retained its charm and is unspoiled by modern development. The beach is said to be one of the most sheltered on the coast and although it is small, you can hire loungers, parasols, pedaloes, kayaks and motorboats here – there is plenty to do. There are just a few shops but the two supermarkets stock everything you could want. There are plenty of bars, cafes and restaurants to choose from.

It is safe enough to leave your belongings on the beach and sit at one of the cafes along the seafront for a cooling drink or lunch.

The beauty of Tamariu is that it is surrounded by wooded cliffs but this makes the walks in this area more rugged! You can walk along the cliffs in either direction and if you are energetic enough, you can walk to the San Sebastia lighthouse, which stands high above Llafranch and has stunning views. It is also possible to walk into the next cove, Aguablavia, often described as the most beautiful cove in Spain or into Palafrugell, the nearest town.
