Elsecar Railway

History:

The current Elsecar Railway was built by Barnsley Council to provide an added attraction to the Elsecar Heritage village. It currently runs for 1 mile for Elsecar to Hemingfield with 1 station at Elsecar, which was built as new by Barnsley Council around 10 years ago.

The line originally ran through from Elsecar to Wath as a colliery line, serving Cortonwood & Elsecar pits. Various passenger trains ran along the line to take people to the estate of the Earl of Wentworth.

Heading into the future:

The Elsecar Railway will see responsibility of operation pass from Barnsley Council to the Elsecar Railway Preservation Group in April. This is expected to `unlock` funds to extend the line from Hemingfield to the Cortonwood retail site, which will extend the line by a further mile. There may be the possibility of extending the line further, but a new tunnel would be needed to get under the access road at Cortonwood. Cortonwood itself is expected to be the new operational base for the Elsecar Railway, with sidings and a large shed planned.
