Postcards: Norfolk Life and History

It is always fascinating to see how people lived in the past and especially to look back at the way our society has been shaped by people and events. Postcards can provide such a glimpse back over the last century. Cards from Norfolk hold a particular fascination for me as it was the county where I was born and spent my childhood.

Sprowston, a suburb of Norwich, is where I grew up. This windmill was featured on my school badge and so holds special memories even though it was burned down many years before I was born!

Sprowston High School was not far from Mousehold Heath, where this shot was taken on the day of King George V's Coronation. We were regularly sent for cross country runs here although on wet days we usually ended up in mud fights.

These cards show some of the devastation caused during the Norwich floods of August 1912.

This card, in woven silk, mourns the death of Edith Cavel, a Norwich born nurse who helped establish an underground lifeline for stranded British soldiers in the First World War. Arrested on 21st July 1915 she was executed by firing squad on 12th October 1915. Acclaimed as a martyr, within eight weeks of her death recruitment to the British Army had doubled!

Norfolk has some of the finest sandy beaches in England. These dunes at Palling-on-Sea are typical of the North Norfolk coast.
