Kensitas are not the only example of woven silk flowers to be given away as cigarette cards. However, the quality of their manufacture and general presentation make them stand out.
The Kensitas designs initially appeared in a 1926 Dutch series issued by the Turkish-Macedonian Tobacco Company. Although the designs were identical, the flowers were normally of a different colour, the background silk was black, and sometimes the name and flowering period were also woven into the silk in Dutch.
One of the earliest sets of woven silk flowers was issued with Egyptienne Luxury Cigarettes in America in 1912. These depicted the state flowers of each US state. The following are examples.
