Work

I joined BT in 1986 and still enjoy working for them today. In that time, I have had a range of different roles building knowledge and skills in Project Management, Software Development, Testing, and Process Improvement. I love the fact that my work makes a real difference to people's lives and that I'm surrounded by such an excellent bunch of people.

Below, I have listed some further details about my career and achievements to date.


John Harrowven

Project Manager - MD6.1 and MD6.2

July 1998 - June 1999

  • Defined and Managed Project Plan, Work Breakdown Structure, Deliverables and Budget totalling £0.5M
  • Managed the port of the MD6 client software to Windows NT4 (Customer launch May 1999)
  • Managed the development of BT's Rapid Reports product through to launch in January 1999
  • Achieved Millennium conformance certification for MD6 delivery
  • Co-ordinated Millennium upgrade with the Derived Services Network in January 1999
  • Developed enabling changes for service delivery via the www
  • Established a Geographic fallback site to protect live service in March 1999
  • Successfully deployed product upgrade to support major changes in the Network Intelligence architecture (September 1998)
  • Managed the development of scripts to automate number changes following the introduction of the '02' code
  • Promoted to Technical Group Leader (August 1998) with additional responsibility for managing a 15 strong team Development and Test Team
  • Accepted into the BT Coaching Network (April 1999).
  • Appointed Unit CARE Manager (June 1999).

Project Manager - MD6

Jan 1998 - July 1998

  • Managed final stages of development, integration, test and deployment of MD6 to complete £7.5M development programme to support Freefone 0800, Lo-call 0845 and Nationalcall 0870
  • Co-ordinated resources across BT (50 people) to achieve a successful deployment on 20/6/98 with minimal impact on over 300 major Telemarketing customers
  • Directed the migration of customer data to a new High Availability hardware Architecture
  • Completed successful handover of system to the Operational and In-life Support teams
  • Led innovative trial for Rapid Reports based on Data Visualisation technology
  • Achieved Security Certification to highest commercial accreditation level 4 (AL4).

Manager MD6 Quality, Test, Security, & Productisation

Feb 1996 - Jan 1998

  • Set up and managed Unit Test, Configuration Management, Security and Productisation (User Guides, Help, Tutorials, and Packaging) Workpackages on £7.5M development programme.
  • Appointed and managed a 9 person multi-disciplined team, planning and monitoring the schedule, budget, and risk for their workpackages totalling over £0.5M
  • Established iterative development process providing appropriate project control and reporting mechanisms including weekly Progress and Issues Meetings and Quality Gates on all deliveries
  • Introduced management metrics to measure product quality and progress towards delivery
  • Produced the Test Strategy, Plans and Procedures for each of the 6 major MD6 components
  • Built, tested and delivered to plan, each of the 15 monthly integration releases and 5 Programme deliveries
  • Established and chaired weekly Fault Targeting Meeting (managing up to 100 new faults per week) and represented the project at the fortnightly Programme Change Control Board
  • Managed sub-contract to provide Configuration and Build Management
  • Produced and published guidelines on the Millennium Problem
  • Established WWW as a primary project communication mechanism
  • Managed Unit’s Modern Apprentice and mentored another to NVQ Level 2 in IT
  • Promoted to Professional Technical Group (January 1998).

Software Engineering Programme Account Manager

Sept 1995 - Feb 1996

  • Managed accounts with 10 BT development units
  • Reduced Programme overhead spend by £550K (35% of total budget)
  • Refocused team on customer led, directly sponsored work
  • Built successful partnerships with software research teams helping them to down stream enabling technologies and provide a commercial foundation for their work
  • United a team of 12 highly skilled technical experts behind a common customer focus.

Software Engineering Improvement Manager -
Project Management and Design

April 1993 -August 1995

  • Established Risk Management standards, methods and tools for BT's Ipswich Software Engineering Centre (ISEC)
  • Designed, developed, and helped to run BT's Cost Estimation and Risk Management course
  • Developed skills framework used to manage ISEC skill profiles
  • Customised 'external' Project Management course used to train over 60 Version Managers. Similarly, evaluated a Sub-Contract Management course
  • Established and led Process Re-engineering team
  • Set up a WWW server to publish the standards and guidelines developed by the team to the wider BT development community
  • Chaired the Design Uplift Task Force and led the design improvement team
  • Key member of team defining standard development toolsets for use across BT
  • Assigned to ISEC's external recruitment team responsible for selecting and appointing new recruits.
