Diss
started the league season with a defeat against relegated
Newmarket at Cricket Field Road. The Diss starting line up
included just four of last season’s squad. There were returns to
a tangerine shirt for Leighton Miller and Gavin Pauling.
The best
chance of the opening quarter of the match fell to Diss. Ed
Cussons sent a fine ball into the danger area in the 15th
minute but Danny Partridge could only put his shot wide of
ex-Tangerine goalkeeper Lee Hulyer’s goal. The opening goal was
scored by another former Diss player. Dale Vince latched on to a
through ball and was judged to have beaten the offside trap
before sliding his shot past Mark Camidge from ten yards out. A
well delivered free kick from Cussons in the 36th
minute was headed narrowly wide by Steve Best.
Diss should
have equalised at the start of the second half. Osiris Gomes ran
down the right and pulled the ball back from the goal line for
Robbie Lawrence to shoot high from six yards out less than 30
seconds after the re-start. Gomes was narrowly wide with a free
kick from 23 yards out five minutes later during the best spell
of the match for Diss. Andy Eady sent a disputed 70th
minute free kick from halfway towards the Diss penalty area.
Camidge punched away under pressure but failed to get depth on
the clearance and Tony Becks sent the ball back over his head
from 25 yards out and into the roof of the net to make it 2-0.
Despite making changes Diss could make no impression on the
Jockey’s rear guard.
